3:20 watercolor pencils for underpainting and then color pencils to get luxurious oil painting like final results. This works only on white Pastelmat since watercolor pencils are totally transparent. When using color pencils, she applied a number of runs: pencils, then OMS. Really laborious process. To make it easier, I may consider leaving out the watercolor pencils stage.
Beautiful painting/drawing. Love the orange yellows, blue, and delicate floral design on the plate rim. Thank you again for sharing your sense of experimentation and expertise, Lana. God bless you.
Beautiful painting-Working with so many layers must take a lot of patience, but the colors are lovely and your skill is almost intimidating! Thank you. You have inspired me to start practicing drawing and playing with my color pencils again.
You will love it! I have product links in the description to make shopping super fast! (I also get a little commission if you use my link ;) ) let me know how it goes!
Thats what I thought the first time I tried it, but I actually haven't used OMS with pastelmat since this piece. I really like this surface for drawing fur and I have noticed OMS isn't necessary
The approach in these demonstrations is great; various (new) surfaces, and different colour pencils and tools are used, in different combinations, to demonstrate various possibilities with the medium. Excellent content, and always a first-rate finished work.
Thanks so much! I always look forward to your comments. This would be a great paper for you to experiment with highlights on (j remember you mentioning that a few weeks ago. .
@@LanaGloschatArt Thank you. I've used Pastelmat paper for (soft) pastels. It comes in pads of sheets in various earthy colours. An almost infinitely workable surface with pastels, but pastel work on Pastelmat looks .. blurred and flat. It's not easy to preserve sharp definitions, nor vary sharpness and definition of delicate pencil strokes to create an illusion of receding depth. I've put it aside and used good quality watercolour paper (Cold Pressed) instead, which (for me) is the overall best surface for anything. However, I did not try wax- or oil-based colour pencils on Pastelmat; they have harder and pointier tips, so I'm curious to see how they may work.
Zvonimir Tosic I did notice that this piece was a bit more flat than others and I think it had to do with laying down opaque layers rather than transparent layers… maybe the paper holds too much material!? Definitely still figuring out some parts of this paper. But I have had great results using pastels on sanded paper and applying colored pencil over the top and InBev it would work on pastel mat too. It was certainly possible to get crisp details on this paper with colored pencils. Best of luck with your artwork, and if you ever want to send me images of your work on Instagram I would love to see what you are making! @lanagloschatart
10:20 This paper is not for beginner color pencil users. It is dead easy-to-use for pastel pencils but finicky for color pencils. This entire video demonstrated it excellently. If you want to experiment with this kind of color pencil style, it's a lot better and far less expensive is to use 1000 or 1200 grit regular hardware store sandpapers. They are fantastic but not available in white, though. I'd use Pastelmat only when you're ready to make a serious piece of artwork.
Lee Sanchez it is definitely worth trying. I just posted another video of a meerkat on pastelmat and a bunch of tips on my Instagram that might be helpful for you. Let me know how it goes and if you have any more questions!
I am excited for you to give it a shot. Here is a link to the paper if you haven't purchased already! Amazon: amzn.to/3N8BkC7 Blick: tinyurl.com/4p66ad8m
Fine Art for Christ so glad you found it helpful and thanks for subscribing. I am working on an online class right now, but once that is ready I will be making videos for UA-cam again
So beautiful, it’s amazing! I get an appetite for fresh peach :-) and the porcelain painting, the colour composition, everything, it is so consistent! I am using the same materials for my photorealistic paintings. Pastelmat and Luminance, Polychromos, Derwent Lightfast and so on. Traditional paper is sooo boring. No lights over dark, colours are weak and streaky. Then I detected Pastelmat. But I still have trouble with blending… don’t want to use any kind of solvent for health issues. I can’t and don’t want to work with it… but I want to get this smooth blending effect and the colour intensity. So I tried some kind of drying oils, blending is fantastic and you can take your time. BUT… oil is yellowing, I store my paintings in the dark. Don’t know what to do, at the Moment I switch to watercolour, but the effects are not comparable to my oil painting :-( Is there no other possibility than mineral spirits?
Thanks so much. You could try inktense pencils. They are water soluble and permanent when dry. They build up layers and then you could do traditional colored pencil over the top. I haven’t tried this combo on pastelmat, but I bet it could work. Panpastel under colored pencil is also an option. I have tons of those videos on my channel.
Silke Kirch FineArt thanks so much! I definitely wasn’t using much but I’ll keep an eye on that in the future for sure! It was my first piece on Pastelmat so I’m still getting familiar with the surface! :)
@@LanaGloschatArt It is so different, it takes a while to get used to. I started on Pastelmat and never switched to watercolour paper because you can layer light over dark and it takes so many layers.
Yes I have found that too! I really enjoy less dust! Well thanks so much for commenting and staying engaged with my content! (You can keep in touch on Instagram/Facebook if you are on those platforms... I’d love to see some of your work too!)
That was great! Please remind me what OMS is? I'm really pleased to have watched this - I live far from any art shops so I have to get information and supplies on line. There's no touching and feeling and sniffing! I always thought pastel mat was just for chalk pastels! So I can use coloured pencils and aquarelle on this, with water and spirits. Such a lovely painting you did!
OMS stands for odorless mineral spirits. And here is a video that teaches you all about it: ua-cam.com/video/bjdxg-vLKVQ/v-deo.html Where do you live? There are some links in the video to order online, but don't work for every country. You could give them a shot. Thanks for watching!
I have heard that many sanded papers are archival on the surface, but the paper they are attached to is not. Do you know if this is true or not with pastelmat. Ps beautiful painting...informative video ...will subscribe !!!!
Hey liz! Pastelmat had this really interesting slick backing... feels more like plastic than paper. This keeps it from warping and it gives it more weight which makes it more sturdy. I would assume the backing is archival, but I am not 100% sure. I actually work on sanded paper more often and am more familiar with that surface!
Thank you! I made this one quite a while ago so I don't really remember… but my guess is 10-12 hours? Sorry for the super late response. I think it depends a lot on how you work and what your materials are. The gray choice on this one wasn't my favorite, but it didn't end up mattering because I covered the entire surface. In another video I worked on a warm yellow paper and I liked that it complemented the fur. Here are links to the videos for that piece: ua-cam.com/video/3zhJBA82EGE/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/UGl6kmu6hGY/v-deo.html Would you be interested in a video about selecting the color of pastel mat?
Could it be that you’re using a bit too much spirit? I never use a brush but a cotton swipe and after putting it into the spirit I dab it on a paper towel before blending my pencil out. Never had the problem of leaking colors. Love your drawing. It is beautiful 😍
I definitely think that played a roll. After using this paper more I realized that OMS isn't my favorite way to blend pencils on this paper... You only need a tiny amount of OMS on Pastelmat, much less than on watercolour paper. That should take care of the bleeding.
