HETEROPHONIUM I : UNION은 다섯의 인성과 타악기를 위한 곡으로, 인성에서 쉽게 얻어낼 수 있는 유동음과 각 창법 고유의 시김새를 주요 음소재로 사용하여 이를 확장시키고 해체하는 것에 목적을 두었다.
본 작품의 콘셉트이자 음악의 중추적 기능을 하는 것은 바로 종묘제례악의 ‘정대업’이다. 작품은 현대적 경향을 띄면서도 정악(正樂)적 어법에 근거하여 전개하였으며, 특히 종결부 절정에 이르러서는 정대업의 형태를 직접적으로 드러내는 등 작품이 시사하는 바를 명쾌히 하고자 했다.
이 작품은 절대음악적 방식으로 쓰였지만 인성의 발음과 다양한 패시지 운용에 알맞는 텍스트를 설정했는데, 전쟁의 무공(武功)을 기리는 정대업의 텍스트와 작곡을 한 본인의 공상을 더해 우주 전쟁이나 외계 침공 등 나름의 SF스럽고 영웅적인 이미지가 연상되기도 하겠다. 음악의 전개에 따라 섹션을 나눠 부제를 지은 후 알맞은 텍스트를 삽입했는데, 명확한 서사가 있지는 않을지라도 감상하는 청자들에게 재치 있는 상상을 더해주기를 바란다.
각 성음이 다른 여성 정가 그리고 비교적 야생성을 가진 경기소리를 혼합하여 생소하면서도 색채가 강한 앙상블을 운용하고자 했다. 전반에 걸쳐 멜리스마(melisma)와 고유 시김새에 따른 헤테로포니(heterophony) 기법을 중심으로 작곡하였고, 무조성을 포함해 Whole-tone scale, Octatonic scale, 전통 음계 등의 여러 음조직을 화성과 선율 구성에 이용했다. 단, 전통적 선율진행 그리고 시김새와 최대한 결합하는 데 유의했다.
'HETEROPHONIUM I : UNION' is a composition for five Korean traditional voices and two percussion and microphones. Its purpose is to utilize the unique vocal techniques (timbre, Sigimsae) of Korean traditional Vocal and the fluidity expressed through the human voice as tonmaterials, expanding and deconstructing them.
The central concept and pivotal function of this piece are directly inspired by ‘Jeongdae-eop’ in Jongmyo Jeryeak. While this piece is highly contemporary in style, it is developed based on the traditional musical language of Korean court music, including Jeongdae-eop. Especially as it reaches the finale, it aims to directly reveal the original form of Jeongdae-eop to clearly convey the message intended by the composition.
This piece was composed as absolute music, but suitable lyrics have been added to facilitate diverse vocal articulations. These lyrics are a fusion of content that praises the achievements of war, as found in Jeongdae-eop, and cosmic imagination, giving rise to a somewhat science-fictional and heroic imagery, including scenarios like interstellar warfare or extraterrestrial invasion. While it doesn't serve a narrative function, I hope it provides listeners with witty imagination.
The voice ensemble of this piece is a blend of four ‘Jeong-ga’ with different tones and one powerful and wild ‘Gyeong-gi sori’. Throughout this piece, it was composed based on techniques like melisma and heterophony influenced by Sigimsae. Various tonal systems were used in harmony and melody construction, including atonality, the Whole-tone scale, the Octatonic scale, and the Korean court music scale.
