Shel Silverstein was a genius. And nobody could sing this but Tompall! It's no wonder nobody cares about country music anymore. We've lost the sparkle.

Singing pop-song lyrics to country-style music is NOT Country Music. I normally don't listen to Country music, but when I do, I want the classics, not this crap that is around now.

This song is another example of the brilliance of Shel Silverstein, who never received the recognition he deserved. He was a poet, a cartoonist a humorist and a songwriter all in one. Remember "A Boy Named Sue" sung by the great Johnny Cash? Shel Silverstein. The only thing this polymath couldn't do was sing. But nobody's perfect.
RIP, Shel. The Lord of Hosts is enjoying your stories.

I heard his recording of "The Great American Smoke Off or something to that effect. The basic plot is there is this girl who could smoke a joint faster than anyone can roll them. Then the world's fastest roller challenged the girl to the smoke off. Yankee Stadium was rented out and every seat was filled to watch the spectacle. There's a huge pile of the finest marijuana minus all the stems and seeds. The contest lasted for a year and the guy ran out of weed, and the girl was still wanting more. So she decided to roll the guy and smoke him.

Sometimes when I would have a girlfriend over for dinner and drinks I'd ask her if she'd like to hear something sexy and romantic. "Sure", was the usual reply. Then I'd play this. If she laughed I knew she had a good sense of humor. To me, that's a keeper. By the way, the one that laughed the best and got the humor has been my gorgeous wonderful wife for 36 years come this April.

OMG loss of a great friend and a great man. Can you imagine what he would have done to the individual who had lacked the common sense to secure their boat?

The first time we heard this song was in the mid-late '70's when we were at Thousand Trails campground in SoCal and Drew (never did know his last name) sang this around the evening campfire -- awesome memories!!!!

My grandpa and my dad's friend Walt always used to sing this at campfires; I just recently heard this on the radio and had the epiphany, "my God, that was a real song!!" Along with some Hank Sr.

Shel Silverstein was a genius who wrote songs many songs made famous by others including "A boy named Sue", "The Unicorn", a bunch by Dr. Hook including "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" and my favorite "the Ballad of Lucy Jordan". My kids grew up on his poems (in book and CD).

To people getting offended by the song:
It's a joke about men expecting women to do everything for them, then trying to figure out why she's leaving him. It's not meant to be taken seriously, so just imagine it like Weird Al Yankervoic's songs. They're made for comedy, not to be taken seriously XD

I decided to bring back some nostalgia in my life. So, I decided to check out the first three seasons of the original The Muppet Show. Season 1 Episode 15, starred Candice Bergen. The first act of the show had Candice performing the lyrics of this song while the hillbilly Muppets were playing. It was a perfect combination which made it extremely funny.

So back in the day. Graduation from Junior college they really didn't have any entertainment. Band director knew me and I played guitar around so ask me if I would put together a presentation. Had about three days to throw a band together. Put another log on the fire is one of the songs we did for them.
