To be honest, the very first time I heard this, I thought that was some weird chromatic chord (which technically is). I've never thought about how dissonant it was. Really nice trivia!

More like a STUNG note. STING stung the piano with his rear-end like a bee. This is clearly a joke which Sting played on people, and all you guys fell for it, hahahaha (I'm not laughing at you guys - I'm laughing at stings joke).

In order to best replicate that moment of buttock-magic, you'll need to cast a ballistic mold of Sting's butt, then apply *that* to the keys, right?

To most people, what's equally strange besides that chord, is why he was laughing right afterward. A casual listener might not even notice the chord, all they'll hear is him laughing, which makes no sense in connection to the opening lyrics. Mystery solved!
He's laughing because Sting stung the piano with his rear-end (like a bee). A bee STING from STING. It's clearly a joke (not an accident), and that is why he is laughing in it. I expect he had a bet with someone about how long it would take for the public to realize it was a joke done on purpose.
Well...I certainly wasn't expecting THAT this morning! I'd heard that chord before, but had forgotten about it. This video was a short but sweet pleasure.
It can be considered an approach chromatic chord given it's offbeat to the actual chord. It sounds great! And really sharp of you to notice that, great ears and videos🤘

As for how he hit the notes, my guess is he went hands first behind his back and the combination of his hand(s) and cheeks made that chord, also your analysis was great! Always wondered what that chord was, since it sounded like a chromatic slide up in the context of the guitar part.

What an achievement as a musician when someone tries to transcribe even the chords you played randomly with your bottom
Because people know I have a lot of keyboards (and a piano) I get asked, or told, "Oh, you're a musician?!" To which I reply - "no, I just own keyboards." Because the difference between me and an actual musician is that a musician can make music with anything anywhere. I've got friends who can make entrancing tunes with half empty peanut butter jars and bananas. I've no doubt someone with Sting's talent could do an entire "alternate body part" sonata on any instrument and it would make sense, musically. Somehow I suspect you have that same ability (I don't advise the banana/peanut butter jar route. Messy.) . Though, no need to play the harpsichord with your elbows, Aimee - we're quite enraptured with your fingers on the ivories.

Hah, I always wondered what happened there. I've been listening to that chord and the following laugh (not in this video) for years but never bothered to look up the story. I always imagined them being weirdos and using the palm of their hand to grab a chunk of notes. Thanks for the story!
My friend was mixing something with a childrens choir for his dad, and at the end of one phrase there was a delicious "yep" from his dad, wich we tok out and put after the end of the song :)

It sounds like there was a very similar weird chord on the last verse of Let It Be over the lyric “mother.” Would be very interesting to dissect that one too. Great video!!

I always thought it was on purpose... The riff on the guitar ends with a F, and slide to th G... So playing a F "just before" the G, really fills like the slide of the "looping" riff...

I like it when musicians incorporate accidents into their music, so I loved this from a trivia standpoint. But in this case, I think it neither adds nor detracts from the song. Truth is, I never noticed it before! One of rock’s happiest accidents? Roger Daltrey stuttering while singing My Generation. The band decided to keep it in, and it truly adds to the angry, frenetic vibe of the song. Trivia fact: The BBC initially refused to play it, feeling that it was offensive to stutterers!

Turns out Sting's butt is a better piano player than I am...
This might need a Fourier spectrum analyzer to decipher. If you listen to the title track, Regatta de Blanc, you can faintly hear Sting yell, "Where's my f@*king echo!" Then a slapback echo is on his vocals. Lol

Reminds me of a Zappa tune I learned years ago called "Penis Dimension" - about halfway through the tune, there's a direction in the score that calls for the performer to "sit on the piano (both buttocks)" (The Frank Zappa Songbook Vol. 1)

In a minor tune I love playing a major triad a semitone below the root, especially at the end of a song. It sounds so jazzy! :)

Great vid - but I think the point is: WHY does this chord fit in so well? In my opinion the two distinct notes you detected - C# and F# can be seen as chromatic approaches to the 5th and the root of the given chord Gm, the Bb being already part of Gm. Also, as they rhythmically 'sit' on the 'and of 4', the sound works as a lower chromatic shift or lead-in. By the way: I love your work on utube, Aimee

I did an acoustic guitar recording for a student and a few days later he said "what's with the barks?" I had accidentally left my window open and the neighbours dog had been barking all the way through the recording 😂 I'm pretty deaf so I wear hearing aids and totally didn't notice it during recording haha.

Get Dylan Beato to verify this. His ear is impeccable and we know that his dad is a fan of the Police having devoted two episodes of What Makes This Song Great to their work (although Roxanne was not one of them). As you may already know, Dylan's ability with perfect pitch borders on the scary.

I was recording a song I'd written and during the process of singing each part, and playing each part, my parakeet chimed in to add it's part. I left that in there. :) even though it didn't really belong in there.
Another fun musical history investigation. If the errant upright piano keylid was partially closed, that would be the way to duplicate the experiment as well. For example, perhaps the keylid was only 1/2 closed, and so the edge of the keylid was left resting on the black keys. That might explain the result you deduced. I am not sure with the pressure distribution via the keylid surface area that the size of the striking rump is significant.

I read in an interview once that due to his Yoga practise, Sting can sustain a Gb6/Gm7 chord on a piano with his butt for up to 8 hours.
I've always kinda wondered what was going on with the beginning of this song.
That's funny - I thought they just hit some really atonal chord a half step down right before that first bass note. (and assumed it was on purpose) Andy Summers is a jazz player, so it seemed in line with something he might think up.

It's as if STING stung the piano like a bee. That a bit too convenient for me. A bee STINGs with its' rear-end, so it's likely that STING stung the piano (with his rear-end) on purpose. You guys fell for it, but it's a very funny joke he played on people, hahahahaha.

5:07 - Gb6 and Gm7 share the same 'third' note (Bb)!
Also, I'm guessing the Ab should also be included. From what I see, Sting sat on a pentatonic scale of 5 black notes!

I have longed for decades to slow down recordings. I believed that if I ever gained that power that I could conquer every chord, every note, every fingering. But I concluded that the only tape units that could do that were unattainably expensive commercial models.
But now you just charge the speed with he little button on the bottom right of the UA-cam video!
Yet the slow speed playbacks are distorted (higher speeds are not). And the presets are not ideal; variable would be great. I'm surprised that you got that clarity just from reducing the speed button.
Naw I used logic
One of many examples of this technique (musically, not physically speaking): Herbie does a similar thing at the beginning of his 'Chameleon' record

where the clavinet jumps in on the last 16th of beat 4. The effect is far 'greater' on Sting's record, as you'd expect Herbie to do this (and a lot of riskier stuff) as a part of his style, but not so in a pop song. I must admit that imho Sting's butt seems not to be in a very funky shape (no offence) - the end of the chord is very undefined in terms of funkyness, isn't it?
However produced on this special occasion, I'd consider the effect worth practicing in different keys, butt (!) I'd recommend using your hands instead.
It sounds good because it's a passing tone to the Gm7.
