Chrysler Corp has more knowledge of Air Conditioning than all the automotive companies combined . They founded Airtemp AC Division way back in 1930 when they fully cooled the whole 85 story Chrysler bldg , first fully air conditioned office building in the world , Chrysler did it !! Then railroads approached Chrysler asking if they could AC railroad Pullman cars , why sure , no problem !! So while GM , Ford , Packard , Studebaker and a couple others struggled to install insufficient systems of which fan belts had to be removed when systems were off for winter or cool weather , Chrysler had designed in a simple control valve so that when the 3sp switch on the dash was turned to 'off' position , that control valve in the evaporator (in the trunk) just opened and no cooling took place and that "unloaded" the pressure and the compressor sort of just free wheeled until the switch on the dash was turned on again for cooling , then the system returned to normal cooling as called for . I have a 1954 2dr Imperial Newport with original system which has operated flawlessly since I restored the complete car in 1968 . I've not had to even add any freon 22 over the past 51 years since completing the restoration and that air blows as low as 42°f from that huge duct on the rear shelf . No draft in the car , it just turns cool instantly . BTW , the system works like newer cars . That is , you dial in the temp you want to maintain by adjusting a temp control knob located on the evaporator located in the trunk just under the rear shelf . If you chose 68°f , when you turn on the system (3sp switch on dash) the blower in the trunk will deliver very cold air until desired temp is reached , then the dischg air will slightly warm and maintain the car interior at the desired temp , which I choose , I like 68 -- lol !! This AC system is almost instantaneous . I love demoing it at cruise gatherings . I have a thermometer stuck in the dischg outlet . Car buffs can't believe it's efficiency , instant cold !! I've had many Imperials , still do , but the 54 is a keeper . Been to hundreds of cruises and shows over the years , but no one has pulled in with another 54 Imp . Mine is fully equipped inc. wire wheels . Dark green body , light green hard top . Hope you enjoyed the ac info . Take care and have fun with your Mopar .
