Just a bit of feedback though would be to try to put the pictures at the beginning of the plant that you are shifting to and have them shown longer. We gardeners come for the pretty stuff and I know I love seeing pictures to understand from the get-go whether or not a plant is for me. I love the great information you are providing here on your channel!
Having a moment here, northern Illinois zone 5. Two years ago decided to go native, straight species. All of the PW are cultivars and they treat with neonicinode, so not those. I'm sticking to my plan. Tearing out mono culture plants like European honeysuckle and boxwood and planting natives. The natives are THRIVING. Yellow birch from Possibility Place were only 2 ft tall in March, doubled in size already and drawing all kinds of life. Ninebark, Fringe tree and Spice bush are glorious. (Ridding my gardens of anything that originated in a different country is challenging and back breaking but lemonade and Advil helps). So I'll view your gardens for a plant fix of beauties and beasts from across the earth and see how your garden grows; love your videos! Especially like that you planted Barrenwort, gorgeous!

I adore the lace caps but also have no luck with macrophyllas, so I’m going to keep an eye out for that Tuff Stuff! I’ve heard that that form of flower actually offers some pollen for pollinators, whereas most have sterile flowers. The more you know...

I suspect you'll have better luck this year. There's a pretty big push to get a lot of these "plant of the year" plants out into the market so people can actually get them. I hope you find it.
I grew Cat's Pajamas for first time last year and I loved that it was deer and rabbit resistant, it looked great and bloomed but I did find a pest that attacks them, my cats. They just loved that one, they would eat the flowers ,they would roll in it and sleep in it till I just gave up. I even planted catnip by it so they would leave it alone and it didn't help any. Even with all that abuse that it went through it still tried to hold its own and it kept on pushing flowers and leaves, it is one tuff plant.
We have a hosta in the garden that looks very similar to Rainbow's End, but I never kept the tag to know what it actually is. We absolutely love it- so eye catching with that unique color pattern- it really makes a bold statement.
I have had the Rainbow's End hosta for about 5 years and it has been my favourite since I bought it. It is always the first up by a few weeks and looks fantastic until the frost hits.
Calamintha nepeta is absolutely my favorite last summer . It goes well with almost everything. If you want to hide some ugly legs of your plants, it is a great choice. BTW, there are blue varieties.
Montrose white is one of my absolute favorites too and I have a spot reserved for Hydrangea Ah Ha. I hope you grow some sunflowers, they’re one of my favs! Great video!

HI Erin I live in South Africa KZN hot and humid, i have a Nepeta similar to Montrose white i call Monstrous white, it huge grew thee feet tall i have cut it back as it was swollowing up my poor Gaura's. The bees are in love with it. The mantis's hid out near it for lunch and i even had Chameleons snacking off bees, butterflys and mantis's. All in All, i give it huge Thumbs up!!!!

"when I was just one kid" That was some list. Speaking of expensive Hostas, I remember when Spilt Milk Hosta was $100 for a 1gal pot. Expensive deer food. The Nepetas were interesting. Montrose is one I'll be looking for. That blue woodland hydrangea...Yes please! That is gorgeous. I'm so glad they have buddlea we can grow and not worry about invasive self sowing. They are weedy a bit here along roads, and in yards. Pugster is such a perfect name! That would probably be one that could be grown well in a larger container of some kind. I love the honey fragrance of the flowers.

I just love catmint too! I love hydrangeas even more, though. Boy, I sure wish someone could come up with a blue or purple hydrangea that would bloom in my zone 4. THAT would be an instant best-seller! Tried the Endless Summer, supposedly reblooming type, and they still do not perform well. I read somewhere someone called it Endless Bummer, LOL! So true!
I've been told that the hydrangea you describe is the "holy grail." All the breeders and plant developers are constantly working toward it or searching for it. As for Endless Summer ... well, let's just say that it was summarily expelled from my garden along time ago. I will say though, that plant folks are aware of issues like that and are working hard for bud hardiness.

Sunflowers are the first thing that gets eaten by critters (groundhogs, possums, rabbits, I don't have dear but I would expect them interested too). So I strongly recommend planting it in areas protected by fencing.
@@Edu_Kate I heard the birds get the seeds, but I didn't have that problem. I sowed directly in soil on June 1st, they all came up pretty fast, in about 4 days. As shoots were about 6 inches (I was getting excited) they were eaten to the ground. I tried again with smaller variety that only gets 4 feet high, but blooms faster, and had the same result. So this year I will have fencing around them.
I just got into gardening this past year (as I’m sure so many have) and was so excited to expand my garden this coming spring. Then I found out the big 17 year brood X cicadas are coming in May to Cincinnati and have no idea what to do or prepare for! All these pretty flowers and I won’t be going outside😫

I remember the last time they came people cutting grass with nets over hats. It’s pretty miserable for about 6 weeks! I also planted some baby trees and read to put nets over them.
I love the rainbows end hosta I got one like two years ago, its nice but I got it into too much sun so it bleaches and looks like a different plant. Also how have you never grown sunflowers? I do even though I have a Squirrel problem and I still get my hopes up every year that they wont destroy them before they are done flowering and the seeds are ready.(never happens) But never the less I still end up planting some
Any tips on when I should cut my buddleias back? Zone 8a (recently changed from 7b) and I feel like when I followed the internet suggestions I killed my growth for the year. I can already see leaves on them, but they are totally unruly and need to be cut back.
Everything I've ever read about zones has said that it's all about the cold temperatures a plant can handle, so I've never understood why the growing zones top out. For example, I'm in zone 9b and we get to 90-110 degrees in the summer. However, an area about 1.5 hours away gets to a high of 75-80, rarely, and it's considered zone 10a. I wonder if the "top" of the listed growing zones are more for plants that need a cold period to perform well.
Do the super bells have to be treated for bud worms? We have such a problem with budworms it makes growing super tunias too difficult and I am looking for another plant that has the same blooming and trailing habits to replace them. Love the way super tunias look at first but can't keep on top of them and they end up being a waste of money and time.
I have 2 of the tuff stuff ah ha. I had never seen it bevor and it was on sale for 1 Euro. So they went home with me. It was late in Oktober and I did not plant it till weeks later. But it was a warm fall in germany. They went in 2 places in my borders. Since we did have a bit of snow and ice now, I dont know if they will make it. I hope so, because they are sooooo nice.
Don’t feel terrible about not having grown sunflowers before. I finally grew them this year, and the squirrels pulled them down just as they were blooming. 😢 🌻
Awwe, little stinkers. You would think they would let them grow because it would give them food one day, but no, they don't think that way. We lost all our corn one year from them doing that, too. Ur!
I had to cover mine until they got too big for the wire basket. After that the rabbits found better things to eat. I truly need rabbit repellant. Any suggestions?
I picked up several Cat’s Pajamas last year and when I got home I realized one was labeled Cat’s Meow. I think that gets a bit taller. Have you grown that one? I have had lace caps on my list for awhile. I grew them when I lived in FL, I can’t remember which variety, but I always loved them. I remember they were slower to grown then my other hydrangeas.
I've grown a bunch of Nepetas and I think Cat's Meow has been among them. I think you're right, that it's a touch bigger. Still a good one though, I think.
@@TheImpatientGardener I’m excited to see hem come back this year. I put them out front in hopes the deer will leave them alone. They completely devoured my rozanne geraniums. Maybe it was rabbits. I hope they come back too. I need to get more repellent!
I bought rainbow's end in '19. It's beautiful, but way too bold for where I put it near my more muted hostas . It needs it own showcase with solid minions around it IMO .
This year is the last chance for my tiny tuff stuff aha ... meh flowering for 2 years, last year hit hard by late frost, moved to a more protected location in 2020 so we’ll see. I had such high hopes for it 😢. Real estate in garden too precious if mehhhh. Zone 5 chicago burbs
I SO wish they could come up with a blue or purple hydrangea for zone 4. I have some Endless Summer that are very hit-or-miss for blooming and I have moved some, but I feel I need something else. I tried the mini mauvette and it didn't stay in the pink-purple color for very long at all... very disappointing. I might just have to go with some white ones because my house is yellow and it seems like all there are so many bright pink ones... they're pretty, just not the color I'm looking for. Well, good luck, I feel your zone pain! =D

@@TheImpatientGardener they don't sell Montana anymore. My aunt gave it to me 10 yrs ago. It's a large hostage with long leaves bright green and yellow in color. Shes a show stopper, everybody asks me which one that is. Wish I could send you a pix. It did produce seeds last year that I saved, I can send you some if your interested.
I have ferals in my neighborhood, anyone know how to keep them out of nepetas? I have two varieties and they eat them down to the roots. I tried orange peels which worked a bit but were ugly.
So the nepeta goes only to zone 8? Is it the heat of a zone 9 or the lack of a sufficient cold period that makes them inappropriate for a higher zone? I would think our current zone 9 would be a perfect growing climate for Nepeta based on my experience with it in Zone 7 (which by the way got as hot as our current zone 9).
I don't know the answer for sure, but I looked up the information provided to wholesale growers on Walters Gardens site and it says: "Not required but is cold-beneficial. Provide 6-9 weeks of cold." So that suggests that it's cold required thing.

Cat's pajama nepeta - does it need to be divided like other perennials? Can it be divided in future years if one is gardening on a budget? @fertilizing nepeta - how often or how often not to fertilize it? I may have fetilized it like my supertunias last year, I think that may incorrect.
Nepetas can be divided to increase your stock, but rarely NEED to be. I pretty much never fertilize perennials. Good soil will take care of it. You were on the right track fertilizing Supertunias though. Those are annuals which can be heavy feeders, especially if they are growing in containers.
I read a great article where the author gave a negative moniker to (variegation + variegation + variegation) in modern garden design. "Contrastifolia" Hosta gardens are very prone to this, lol.
So I hear people say that cat like their nepeta often, but neither of mine has ever cared a lick about it. It is related to catnip, but not the same. Maybe some other folks can weigh on in their experience with it.
I am ready to ditch all of my Hosta. No matter what I do, they turn into a ragged disgusting mess. In shade or sun, rock or soil or wood chips, treated for slugs which I never see near them... or whatever they just end up looking horrible. I get to a point each year that I just cut them back to the ground. I see them in others' gardens looking so lush but I must be cursed! LOL! Any ideas?
I knew it would be close between those two.Actually it's not close at all ... I looked it up and you are so right. More than 80,000 registered daylily cultivars and about 7,000 registered hostas!

I have all my raised bed and potting soil already. In this crazy world you can never be too early. I am done with petunias forever. The amount of insecticide you have to apply to keep looking nice is unreal. I rather grow geraniums and sunpatiens.

I always wondered who decided that a plant earned the title “ plant of the year” and I was skeptical, thanks for breaking it down.

Any tips on when I should cut my buddleias back? Zone 8a (recently changed from 7b) and I feel like when I followed the internet suggestions I killed my growth for the year. I can already see leaves on them, but they are totally unruly and need to be cut back.
Everything I've ever read about zones has said that it's all about the cold temperatures a plant can handle, so I've never understood why the growing zones top out. For example, I'm in zone 9b and we get to 90-110 degrees in the summer. However, an area about 1.5 hours away gets to a high of 75-80, rarely, and it's considered zone 10a. I wonder if the "top" of the listed growing zones are more for plants that need a cold period to perform well.
Where do you order your seeds from?
Do the super bells have to be treated for bud worms? We have such a problem with budworms it makes growing super tunias too difficult and I am looking for another plant that has the same blooming and trailing habits to replace them. Love the way super tunias look at first but can't keep on top of them and they end up being a waste of money and time.

I have 2 of the tuff stuff ah ha. I had never seen it bevor and it was on sale for 1 Euro. So they went home with me. It was late in Oktober and I did not plant it till weeks later. But it was a warm fall in germany. They went in 2 places in my borders. Since we did have a bit of snow and ice now, I dont know if they will make it. I hope so, because they are sooooo nice.
Don’t feel terrible about not having grown sunflowers before. I finally grew them this year, and the squirrels pulled them down just as they were blooming. 😢 🌻

Awwe, little stinkers. You would think they would let them grow because it would give them food one day, but no, they don't think that way. We lost all our corn one year from them doing that, too. Ur!
I had to cover mine until they got too big for the wire basket. After that the rabbits found better things to eat. I truly need rabbit repellant. Any suggestions?

I picked up several Cat’s Pajamas last year and when I got home I realized one was labeled Cat’s Meow. I think that gets a bit taller. Have you grown that one? I have had lace caps on my list for awhile. I grew them when I lived in FL, I can’t remember which variety, but I always loved them. I remember they were slower to grown then my other hydrangeas.
I've grown a bunch of Nepetas and I think Cat's Meow has been among them. I think you're right, that it's a touch bigger. Still a good one though, I think.
@@TheImpatientGardener I’m excited to see hem come back this year. I put them out front in hopes the deer will leave them alone. They completely devoured my rozanne geraniums. Maybe it was rabbits. I hope they come back too. I need to get more repellent!
I bought rainbow's end in '19. It's beautiful, but way too bold for where I put it near my more muted hostas . It needs it own showcase with solid minions around it IMO .

This year is the last chance for my tiny tuff stuff aha ... meh flowering for 2 years, last year hit hard by late frost, moved to a more protected location in 2020 so we’ll see. I had such high hopes for it 😢. Real estate in garden too precious if mehhhh. Zone 5 chicago burbs
I SO wish they could come up with a blue or purple hydrangea for zone 4. I have some Endless Summer that are very hit-or-miss for blooming and I have moved some, but I feel I need something else. I tried the mini mauvette and it didn't stay in the pink-purple color for very long at all... very disappointing. I might just have to go with some white ones because my house is yellow and it seems like all there are so many bright pink ones... they're pretty, just not the color I'm looking for. Well, good luck, I feel your zone pain! =D

@@TheImpatientGardener they don't sell Montana anymore. My aunt gave it to me 10 yrs ago. It's a large hostage with long leaves bright green and yellow in color. Shes a show stopper, everybody asks me which one that is. Wish I could send you a pix. It did produce seeds last year that I saved, I can send you some if your interested.

I have ferals in my neighborhood, anyone know how to keep them out of nepetas? I have two varieties and they eat them down to the roots. I tried orange peels which worked a bit but were ugly.
So the nepeta goes only to zone 8? Is it the heat of a zone 9 or the lack of a sufficient cold period that makes them inappropriate for a higher zone? I would think our current zone 9 would be a perfect growing climate for Nepeta based on my experience with it in Zone 7 (which by the way got as hot as our current zone 9).
I don't know the answer for sure, but I looked up the information provided to wholesale growers on Walters Gardens site and it says: "Not required but is cold-beneficial. Provide 6-9 weeks of cold." So that suggests that it's cold required thing.

Cat's pajama nepeta - does it need to be divided like other perennials? Can it be divided in future years if one is gardening on a budget? @fertilizing nepeta - how often or how often not to fertilize it? I may have fetilized it like my supertunias last year, I think that may incorrect.
Nepetas can be divided to increase your stock, but rarely NEED to be. I pretty much never fertilize perennials. Good soil will take care of it. You were on the right track fertilizing Supertunias though. Those are annuals which can be heavy feeders, especially if they are growing in containers.

I feel stupid asking this but do cats love nepeta? I think it’s beautiful but I don’t want the neighbors cats in my yard.
So I hear people say that cat like their nepeta often, but neither of mine has ever cared a lick about it. It is related to catnip, but not the same. Maybe some other folks can weigh on in their experience with it.

Neeta may be deer and rabbit proof but it is not cat proof! I've given up with it after having a succession of nepetas nibbled to death.
I am ready to ditch all of my Hosta. No matter what I do, they turn into a ragged disgusting mess. In shade or sun, rock or soil or wood chips, treated for slugs which I never see near them... or whatever they just end up looking horrible. I get to a point each year that I just cut them back to the ground. I see them in others' gardens looking so lush but I must be cursed! LOL! Any ideas?
I can't grow Calamintha in my heavy clay soil.

Calmenthita Nepeta out of my zone. Im zone 9a 100 degree 100 humidity. Thia plant will not survive Texas heat and humidity. Sad

There are a lot more daylily varieties then hosta varieties.
I knew it would be close between those two.Actually it's not close at all ... I looked it up and you are so right. More than 80,000 registered daylily cultivars and about 7,000 registered hostas!

I'm embarrassed to say that I just don't get the love of sunflowers. They are fine in someone elses yard but I don't want them.
@Starla, I agree although I may try this white variety if available in my area . I think that it just comes down to what type of garden design one has established .
Honestly, I don't even like them in someone else's yard. The only way they look right to me is in a field.
I have all my raised bed and potting soil already. In this crazy world you can never be too early.
I am done with petunias forever. The amount of insecticide you have to apply to keep looking nice is unreal. I rather grow geraniums and sunpatiens.
