    Your channel is the best. I wish I had 1% of the knowledge you do on working on camcorders. Why isn't there someone like you near me haha.

    On my TR750 I had the same problem with the control buttons doing the funny stuff and with multiple tries it would do the right thing. Now it only ejects the the tape half way and stops. Then I have to do the "manual" eject/load to get it to operate. I can't find the problem and would be glad if you can suggest how to maybe fix this. Thanks for all the tips and you really inspire me to tackle my problem "children" over and over again...some with good results and some not. Thanks Dave and keep the videos coming. I really enjoy watching them over and over again.

    I think you used to work for Sony in the past? I was amazed how quickly you took this apart. It’s like you were revisiting an old friend!

      Hello, I am from Germany. i wanted to breathe new life into an old family piece from the basement. a sony tvr 66e. but the standby lock record button is missing. can it be expanded normally? I've searched all over the internet and can't find any information about it. therefore they are my last resort . do you have any tips?

    Awesome work! I had a kind of same failure from a Handycam CCD TR-55, maybe it's the same flex cable, or maybe not. I cleaned all the connections and flex cables and i got the same. It's one of the VCR reels, the left one, it doesn't move while recording/play/rewind, the camera stops the movement after 5 seconds and ejects the tape. Any cable or connection in special where i must put more interest to clean it up? Thanks, wizard.

    Just bought one of these at a Carboot sale just waiting on a charger to test. After watching this video I’ve decided if it has issues no way in hell am I going to take it apart and try to fix 😂

    Would this repair be similar for a CCD-TRV95/TRV99? The control panel for the playback feature VTR do not light up or work. We did replace the battery inside the viewfinder.

    Found the problem on my tr750. The ribbon cable...at 26m50s when you were re assembling...on my cam is damaged. Someone were in there before me...some missing and loose screws. So wish I can get hold of a replacement.

    Sony and other Japanese manufacturers would frequently use a sort of voltage level encoding to multiplex several buttons with a single data line. With a 5V supply, Sony would multiplex 8 different buttons and each button would set a different voltage level on the data line so that an ADC would be able to decode the actual button pressed. The encoding was obtained using a resistive ladder so that each button would short to ground a different point of the ladder generating a specific voltage on the data line. The resistive ladder would use resistor from 100 ohm to 47 kOhm and it works fine if the buttons (actually tactile switches) have a very low resistance (say < 2 Ohm); with age that resistance can actually increase up to 200 Ohm and that would cause some voltage levels to be off causing buttons to misbehave. Sometime those switches can be cleaned but very often they have to be replaced (if they can be found). I have spare units where all switches have a resistance between 40 and 200 Ohm and only a few are still within spec.
    Other manufacturers, e.g. Philips, would use a different approach combining the buttons in an X/Y grid which is periodically scanned to identify which buttons are pressed; In that case, internal resistance of the switch is less critical and all buttons works fine even after 30 years.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 роки тому

      X-y grid requires more than 2 wires and inputs on ic. They need typically 4 scan lines and 4 input lines and that gives 16 switches to be scanned. That can be done with 2 wires and 16 resistors.

    • @enricoself2256
      @enricoself2256 2 роки тому

      @@12voltvids In the case of Philips they were using the same lines used to light up the VFD as X lines, so they just needed 3 Y lines for over 25 buttons, same as with the resistive ladder approach, but much smarter and reliable if you ask me.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 роки тому

      @@enricoself2256 that only works if you have a multiexed display.
      It's a keyscan. Sure they are reusing existing scan signals but on a device with no display on the key input board you still need to get the scan signals there. Again way more wires. Resistor ladder takes only 2 wires. Sense and ground. Each key has a resistor that is pulled to ground. Much simpler a design and that's why everyone went that route. Can all be encorporated into the main cpu, and if a different model is brought out more values can be added to the resistor ladder.

    Got a me Hi8 Handycam just yesterday. Other than the numerical LCD missing some segments, and the battery being dead, the only fault I thus far have noticed, is an, intermittent zoom control. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Pretty good for 25 year old camera. Playback controls work fine. I wonder if the switch is just dirty... Shall watch this video, the model isn't exactly the same, but similar.

    When you showed that cracked ribbon i sucked air through my teeth, fragile ribbons :-(.
    I've got away with using fine multistranded wire in long floppy loops to allow limited movement.
    But they always fail depending on use.
    On some old laptops the lcd to pcb ribbon cracks at the edges and slowly cuts through the grounds untill there are no grounds left.
    I'm talking about the ribbon that's wrapped like a toilet roll, Yes they are sh1t ha ha :-D.

    That is a dumb design. They had to know that cable would be flexing hundreds of times they should have come up with something to handle that better but I'm sure they wanted to sell more cameras too.
