  • We all could use some practical wisdom, and we learn from others' mistakes down the centuries from many different cultures' wisdom literature. The unique Old Norse example of this is Hávamál, now available in a new dual-language edition with translation by Old Norse specialist Dr. Jackson Crawford.

    You are truly a wise man Jackson, I love your work and I prefer to listen to and read your work over the Icelandic versions even being an Icelander, one of the main reasons for that is that I am a tour guide here in Iceland and I focus a lot on my heritage during my tours and it makes it easier for me to translate so many things and tell the tales of the gods in english, I would greatly appreciate if you would narrate this book on audible although I will most definitely get the book as well.

    What an astounding channel! I’m so happy I stumbled upon it, because I’m about to dive into the Saga world. Thank you for the superb effort. Can’t wait to learn Old Norse, have already Finnish, Swedish and German in the ’toolbox’. Kudos Mr. Crawford.

      I get why you would compare the two but the fundamentals are so different. The Havamal is more like the Tao te Ching, similarly timeless but of the old Nordic people and their world.

    Currently trying to order the cloth copy from Australia via Hackett Publishing link provided, but it’s telling me there’s no shipping options!
    What would be the next best option to buy through that would give you the best cut?

    • @stellanathaniel3198
      @stellanathaniel3198 4 роки тому +1

      As of right now (Dec. 5), for the cloth hardcover edition I believe it is available if you go through Amazon Global (amazon.com rather than amazon.com.au). Boulder Bookstore (Dr. Crawford's local independent bookstore) also does offer international shipping if you contact via email at orders at boulderbookstore.com -- I'm not sure if they have the hardcover in stock (they do have the softcover), but if you prefer not to go through Amazon they're definitely an option worth checking. Dr. Crawford gets the same cut no matter what retailer you purchase it from, so while the thought is definitely appreciated, wherever you can most easily order it from is fine.

    Would there be a correlation in translation of tree between this text and the text found in Galatians in the New Testament where it states that "Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree"? This is from the KJV version.

    • @Martha-uo5eu
      @Martha-uo5eu 4 роки тому +3

      Tyler Braithwaite I believe it’s a reference to the Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 21:23). But all that tree hanging back in the day was definitely a mood, it seems.

    Mr Crawford i have a important question for you, through my own research into the mythology of the old norse i have noticed that the number 9 is reoccurring alot can you explain this to me please. Is it just a coincidence or is there something to this? I’ll explain a little, in the 3 interlocking triangles you find on rune stone each point adds up to 9,at Ragnarök Thor is bitten by jormangundr and takes 9 steps before he dies. And when odin hangs himself from Yggdrasil pierced by his own spear he hangs for 9 days, there are 9 worlds that Yggdrasil supports. And ive noticed other occasions of this too. Could you please explain

    • @stellanathaniel3198
      @stellanathaniel3198 4 роки тому +1

      Dr. Crawford's probably referring to the Instructions of Shuruppak and Instructions of Ptahhotep; he mentions both in the latter part of his "Odin and Wisdom" video: ua-cam.com/video/Kvyos8fEn0Q/v-deo.html

    Is there any way to get a physical copy in Latvia? Cause it seems like Amazon US doesn't ship here.

    • @stellanathaniel3198
      @stellanathaniel3198 4 роки тому +1

      I just checked Amazon, and it did give me Latvia as a shipping option/in stock when I changed my shipping location (it was in a link near the price on the right hand side), so I'm not sure why it wouldn't be showing up-- might be worth checking in with Amazon customer support if it's still giving you issues (or keeping an eye on www.bookdepository.com/Wanderers-Havamal-Jackson-Crawford/9781624668357 , they had it in recently but it sold out within a day)

    Although I am a fan of Dr Crawford I am reluctant to buy this volume. I already own His version of the Poetic Edda, so I hear you say, "BUT what about the Runic version?" Since it's first English publication (I pre-ordered this) 5 years ago, I have owned a similar version bySaemundur Sigfusson that uses the 1908 Olive Bray translation. The English may be dated but to me it's like reading Shakespeare.
    I am, however, looking forward to future works translated by Dr Crawford, should I live long enough to see them.
