My dude! You used a 4 min intro to a commercial ;) just kidding. What a banger tips! And even the sponsorship is intergraded pretty well, thats nice. Its nice to have this format that you can share your knowledge, save me time and you earn incentives so i can watch for free. Awesome! Best tips in a while. Keep it going!

Totally agree that 100% of the budget should go to the editor.
😂😂😂💸💸💸
Mark, I appreciate your ability to critique your own previous works in service of helping yourself and others get better. Hats off for that!
Thanks Nick!!
The more I get serious in editing for UA-cam, the more I respect documentary and Hollywood editors... It's time consuming and really comes down to art, learning the rules and breaking them sometimes. Thanks so much for this as always...
Documentary editing is a long game. I have the utmost respect for all long form editors
Love Lewis' tip about being an invisible editor, doing too much often makes an edit tacky and takes the attention away from from the story. Thanks guys!
Also, it was really cool meeting you at the 'Okay' London premiere, hope you enjoyed the rest of your time here.
Thanks Elliot! Great to meet you also
'Become comfortable with being invisible'. That's an incredible tip, because I think there are a few reasons why we might be tempted to showcase our editing in obvious ways: The first is what was mentioned in the video, 'showing off' basically. But I think another reason is that we want to feel like we've contributed to the film. If we can edit in some cool transitions, we might feel like we've 'earnt our keep' more than just editing for story, even though the latter probably creates a better film overall. Working in a field where your work is only recognised when you've made a mistake is hard, and editing falls into that category. Having your work goal be to make it look like no one did the work at all is tough. But it's a worthy goal, and the work itself benefits.
Yes to being an invisible editor! It was a little hard for me to gain confidence into branching out in this career path because of all the flashy edits that weren’t my style. Then I found a client who was pretty much looking for an invisible and not flashy editor so that was a big confidence boost.
Getting away from cutting to the beat is a little tricky for me as my introduction to editing was cutting AMV’s back in high school 😆
But yes, allowing shots to breathe is super important.
I love the approach on editors needing to stop drawing attention. Editors needs to craft the story for others! not show their skills. Love it!
Thanks Luke! Go be invisible
Great information here. 2 things.
1. Duplicating your timeline is great practice, just llike CMD+J in Photoshop being step one to processing a photo.
2. Finding a balance of editing to the beat, but also with story in mind is a difficult balance that I'm trying to find at this point in my career.
The most impressive advice here is to not always and only cut to the beat because it’s there. I’m editing an image video for a local barbershop at the moment and I find myself cutting to the beat over and over. I think I’ll have to duplicate my project to mess around a bit with the edit. Thanks for this video
Thanks for the comment! It’s great advice
Love the tip about copying sequences!! I usually do it on the timeline, but that way is much better and way less messy! See you in Toronto in a few weeks!
See you then brother!!
The audio pop happens because there is a waveform break, where the waveform, at the sample level, goes from one level to another, in that instant. It doesn't have to be loud, just a break in the waveform.
Thank you Aaron Van Domelen
Shortcut: You can set default audio transition to one frame, and then highlight all audio clips, then choose "apply default audio transition" and you do not have to do the audio transition on each clip.
mind blown
Haha I just dropped the same tip!
That last tip, really opens up my mind not only editing but shooting as well! Mark as always killing it with your videos!
Thank you Kariza-Youduber
@@markbone hahah kariza-Youduber?
Amazing. Watching these zoom, pop, flash, flash, pop, turn, speed, up, down left right, pop videos are leaving me feeling exhausted. Love your attention to storytelling. Thanks brotha.
😂ha yeah they’re overdone!
Duplicating my sequences has given me so much mental freedom to try new approaches and make big changes without the fear of loosing the other options.
Can’t wait for the course. Ive been looking for other creators to help me transition to the documentary/storytelling process. I’ve binged probably 15 of your videos today, taking notes, and out of everyone else, your videos allowed me to truly digest and understand the the processes that go into documentary film making.
The passion you have for what you do spreads to your viewers and motivates us. So thank you, for helping me and everyone else become better story tellers, editors, all while ensuring that we remember why we started in the first place 🙏
Thanks brother! Stoked to have you in the course :)
I tried to like this twice. Great video!
Haha thanks Liam!!
Love Lewis 🤣🤣🤣. But no seriously. Love this video man. Thanks for putting this out there for people like us
Great point on editing to and not editing to the beat. Paul Hirsch (Empire Strikes Back Editor) had a good take on that as well in his book. Basically, don't do it. Edit slightly before or after the beat which helped give more impact to the shot.
Also, editing to every beat etc. can get predicitable really quick to an audience and that can induce boredom if things are too predictable!
Great vid Mark! Thanks
Thanks Vic! Editing to the beat is just a bit boring
You are literally the most articulate person on this platform. Love it.
Thanks mate ♥️
Super useful tips here man! Editing for story instead of action is so key, that’s how I edited everything up until recently👌🏾
Forgot to add “have huge biceps like JC”
@@markbone I knew there was something missing from this😅😂
Its been videos like this that have inspired me to start up my UA-cam channel as a way to practice what is being taught thank you Mark bone
Besides duplicating timelines I suggest to resafe a project to new file from time to time (as for Davinci Resolfe backuping a database is also good idea)
Love all the tips you shared! As I self audit myself, I am definitely guilty of some of the things you mentioned which is why im giving myself more freedom to experiment going forward and see the response from viewers
damn right about everything and that cut to the beat that should only be done when it's related to story like in whiplash.
💯
@@markbone thanks for making such great videos waiting for your film
Loving it !
Bro on point yet again I’ve been slamming this kind of thinking into the last few vids the game has changed mate I’m loving it ,hope ya well and not to busy mark cheers
Never too busy. There’s always more :)
misconceptions, montage, informative 10mins.
Thank you so much for your videos! Helps a lot. I'm a fulltime musician and audio engineer; but my passion for film got stronger and stronger and after shooting some music live-session one-shot videos I finally got a chance to film a music video with a story line. We had to do it all in one day, and location scouting was done by someone else; so everything going a bit chaotic. But keeping a clear head and having the story line and the way I wanted to approach it in my mind all the time , it all went quite nicely. Thank you for your countless tips! It has been a great help. The technical stuff is important and has to be second nature - lots of youtube channels out there for that; but your content shows what makes a film especially good.
Oh and by the way: Good tip with the audio editing. Lots of people seem to forget about that. Tech background: If you don't fade in or fade out, the audio track will jump from zero point to the point of the recorded audio in a straight vertical line, which results in a burst of lots of overtones - a quite nasty sound. Think of it as a short overtone-rich square wave form in comparison to a smooth sine wave form with no overtones at all.
Once again coming in with the goods, your videos never disappoint 👌
Thanks brother 🙏🏻
Also huge congrats and the fastest youtube sub growth i think i've ever seen!!
all great tips, as always...have done the mad search through auto save folders too many times...now must remember to duplicate like mad!
Love this man! I'm in your house and I rewatch the editing tips all of the time!
Thanks for the handbook
Nice tips bro! Thanks!
Awesome tips as usually Mark! Invaluable content!!!
Glad you like them!
Remember your storyteller not a splicer.
Great video thank you mark
thanks IIan!
Not sure why I never duplicate my sequences. Smart!
You must!!
@@markbone do it all the time and Photoshop, yet it never crossed my mind to do it with my videos. Thanks Mark, you have been super useful and one day when I can afford your course..
Great tips, thanks Mark. Currently editing and needed to hear this !
Go crush it Curtis
This was SO INFORMATIVE WOW MAKES SO MUCH LOGICAL SENSE THANKQ
Damn!! Thanks for sharing your skills with us! This all makes so much sense 🙌
thanks for watching brother!
Thanks on the tips !
You bet!
Great stuff here, puts some items on the checklist for the re-cut of my one day doc. Especially jumping in with the what and why first.
🙏🏻 the best editing is often re-editing!
Brilliant. Thank you so much.
Thanks man!
Thank for tips.. i learn to be story teller, not a shot, shot, shot and cut, cut cut.. :) Thank you so much
You always have all this great tips Marc ❤
je m'appelle Mark
Thanks for the great content and free pdf!
You’re most welcome Daniel
this is helpful for a new comer like me.
thank you so much for sharing.
But editing to the beat is so much fun!!!
The point of building scenes really hit home for me, it’s so easy to default to just sprinkling aimless B-roll over the radio edit. Thanks a lot! Can’t wait for the course!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love it
Thanks man
That was fun, and funny. ahh, the good life.
😂
Your direct-to-camera footage looks amazing in this one man!
So glad someone noticed 😂
Good stuff and very helpful to apply to any footage! We are seeing many editors following the trends with fancy transitions and other visual effects added to enhance the video that sometimes lacks a story behind!!Could not agreed more we are storytellers and we should be trying to make the edits as fluent as possible to let the story speaks by itself!!Great tips!!!
Transition editors 🤢
2:30 It took me years to stop duplicating sequences in FCP. It renders the "Used media" tag inoperable. Snapshot is the equivalent in FCP. Same rationale, done differently.
that's good to know!
so valuable
thanks brother
I wish I had discovered AOD before enrolling in film school 😅
So excited about the focus on editing
Thanks man!!
We have lots of students in both film school and AOD!
@@markbone Hopefully I will be one of the cool kids sooner than later 🙃

A Didier in the wild! What a momentous day for me. This is nuts.
haha, love to all the Didiers around the world
3:43 Air Buds 😆 someone loves their dog movies I see
Nice
😂 when’s Lewis getting his own channel?! Entertaining and informative! 👏🏼
The AOD editors workshop he’s leading is better than any UA-cam channel!
Can't wait to enrol to AOD next year!

You B roll comment is interesting. I participated in the Sam Newton contest and your words hold true. It's what I thought about a lot watching the entries.
yeah b-roll should have meaning not just style!
What i learned in film school about documentary is to never rely on the interview. Actually, we were advised never to shoot an actual interview. Best advice ever imo
perhaps a good principal but wouldn't avoid them all together, but i do agree people rely on them too much
Okay but when are you dropping “i am invisible” merch for AOD?
Good call. We need a slogan
I'm going to duplicate my sequence right now! 2:31
YOU MUST
03:14 - When the waveform cuts off at a PCM sample point above or below unity (0) it will produce a click or pop; the fade places allows the sample points at the end of the clip to finish at unity (0); I'm curious in DAW (Digital audio workstations) we can set (Auto fades) for when we cut or edit regions of Audio; is this something do-able in final cut?
Hi Mark, How did you expose for low light scenes like the intro for the storm chasing documentary, guy standing with the dark clouds in background? Is it still with skin tones at 70IRE or some other value?
In those cases I’m exposing for the sky entirely. My main focus
Ayo fellow Sheridan student??? I was not expecting Didier
He’s the man!
I don't understand the one frame audio transition thing? Why would there be a dip or click at each transition? I've never noticed that. Can someone please clarify?
7:24 that feels like the runner is going to attempt suicide 😂 you are right
The music we actually use in that film is so much different
@@markbone yeah i know you used this music just for example:)
How do you avoid cutting a scene so abruptly? What scene should follow it to avoid it feeling like that? 🤔
Will topic be covered in the AOD?
Sorry don’t quite understand the question?
Shoot however u want bruh. Denis Villeneuve loves B-Roll. He'll show everything in a room. Ron Howard shoots every possible angle. Spielberg loves long single shots of dialogue. But thanks for the editing tips as well.
You get that I’m not criticizing their work but any examples from them are in support of the points I’m making yeah?
@@markbone I apologize if I sounded rude. U legit inspired my stuff. Did my first little documentary using your tips and knowledge. U can check it out on my page.
And I quote from cars "I am speed" - lightning McQueen
😂
What does it mean, cutting for story.. or for action?
Action means movement. Story means meaning and plot
@@markbone I know.. but can you give an example? Sometimes it's hard to separate .
Me resisting the urge to cut to the beat 😵💫
😂
I think my most mistake is putting this cracy transitions and B-roll. But for now I will take your advice guys.
Story > style
3:44 GO ON, BUDDY. I DON'T WANT YOU ANYMORE. GET.
GET WHAT?!?!?
I was just referencing Air Bud 😂
First 🥵
Well done, big day
Pineapple belongs on pizza bro! 🤣😏
haha, I can go either way
🤣 Lewis
The funniest
"Airbuds"
😂😂😂
I like you, but you keep milking your own aimless b-roll. You keep adding your tornado or motor-cross shots over everything even if its got 0 relevance, makes me wonder if these are all you have? I don’t mean to discourage you in any way, I think you are ok.
It’s eitherthose shots or One-Wheel/Coffee B-Roll. That’s all you get on UA-cam. 😂
