  • Rare footage of the composer Sergei Prokofiev playing his own music and being interviewed about the activities he was engaged with at the time.
    The Russian translates thus:
Prokofiev is being asked: "Sergei Sergeevich, maybe you will tell our viewers about your work?"
He replies: "Well, right now I am working on a symphonic suite of waltzes, which will include three waltzes from Cinderella, two waltzes from the War and Peace, and one waltz from the movie score "Lermontov." [The War and Peace] has just been brilliantly produced in Leningrad, where the composer Cheshko (?) made an especially noteworthy appearance as a tenor, giving a superb performance in the role of Pierre Bezukhoff. Besides this suite, I am working on a sonata for violin and piano [no.1 in f minor], upon completion of which I will resume work on the sixth symphony, which I had started last year. I have just completed three suites from the Cinderella ballet and I am now turning the score over to copyists for writing the parts, so that most likely the suites will already be performed at the beginning of the fall season."

(Translation for English-speaking admirers of Prokofiev):
    - Sergey Sergeevich, can you tell our audience about Your work?
    - Well, I'm working on a Symphony Suite that will include three waltzes from Cinderella, two waltzes from War and peace, and one waltz from film Lermontov. Now with great brilliance put in Leningrad [War and peace], and especially distinguished composer Chizhko, who acted as a tenor and perfectly performed by Pierre Bezukhov. I've just finished three suites from the ballet Cinderella, and I'm giving their in publishing to write of the parts, so they'll probably be playing at the beginning of the fall season.

This was filmed on the porch of Prokofiev's country house at Nikolina Gora, 30 miles west of Moscow, which he bought in the Summer of 1946. He was enjoying temporary recovery from a long health crisis (chronic hypertension and injuries in a fall) and would soon relapse, but he looks and sounds good here. Priceless clip. Thanks so much for the post!

The genius himself said that he is working on a symphonic suit Waltz that will contain of 3 waltzes from Cinderella, 2 waltzes from War and Piece and one from the movie Lermont! "Simultaneously I'm also working on a sonata for violin and piano and the 6. Symphony that I've started last year! My Russian is good enough to know that Prokofiev (pretty much as indicated) is going through a list of compositions and performances. The interest in hearing this is mainly what this says about him as a person: very organized. He speaks briskly, yet clearly, so he sounds well-educated (not surprising). I wonder whether there's a touch of southern accent, since he was born in what's now eastern Ukraine--though I didn't hear a Ukrainian "h" in place of a Russian "g."

+Chris Lovett Вы , действительно , знаток русского языка и были близки к вашим ощущениям , в его русской речи несомненно присутствует мягкий украинский акцент , по крайней мере , у него абсолютно отсутствует характерный московский выговор . To my ear, his accent is rather an accent of that time than a southern accent. The way he speaks reminds me of TV and radio voices of that time. And I also adore his organized and clear speech. Such a genius.
