Versailles is by far my favorite vk band I've found. I speak zero Japanese but have memorized several of their songs by listening to them so much (and looking up romaji lyrics lol). The instrumentals are fantastic and Kamijo's voice is like butter.

Why the heck doesn't anyone know it's pronounced Ver-sigh, as in the former French royal palace. Anyway, welcome to v-kei. Versailles is the best band you could've picked. They are neo-classical symphonic metal to be precise and their costumes are French rococo style and their "theme" is that they are noble vampires from the Clan of the Rose in the court of King Louis XIV....or something like that. Really, one super talented band. The band Jupiter are the newer version with a different singer, drummer and bassist .

Versailles are the only ones i listen to, i just love them way too much, many of their songs are great, among them i'd suggest Ascendead Master, Faith and Decision (live from Holy Grail if you'd like), God Palace (also some great live performances) Destiny the Lovers and Lineage, but as i said, so many songs are worth listening to, in my opinion

When it comes to visual kei, "when in doubt, it's a guy". There's a meme out there for it on the internet somewhere, but it's a true rule. Visual Kei bands are predominantly male. However, there is one band that is the exception and that is Exist Trace. Their band consists of entirely female members.
To answer your question about name pronunciation for Versailles, it's "VER-sigh". Many visual kei (VK) bands will use French words in their band names, lyrics, song titles, or album titles. This is because VK music and fashion is heavily influenced by the French Rococo (or Rocaille) and Baroque periods.
Other recommended VK bands to check out include X Japan, Malice Mizer, Moi dix Mois (pronounced "muwah-DEE-muwah"), ZIZ, Gazette, Dir~En~Grey, An Cafe (pronounced "ON-cafe), Luna Sea, Kuroyume (pronounced "koo-roh-yoo-meh"), Girugamesh (pronounced "gea-loo-gah-mesh"). L'Arc~En~Ciel (pronouned "LARK-un-Seal") is credited as a VK band, however they stepped away from the visual aspect of VK, opting for a more casual, yet eclectic, rock style. That band is my favorite! Kamijo is my favorite, he is the vocalist, before they were called Versailles but since there was already a band with that name they decided to change it to Versailles Philharmonic Quintet
In my opinion, they do a vampire-esque story (they have a few songs about vampirism), the little girl ages into a woman at normal speed, but they dont age at all, theyre stuck in the masquerade.
Ah kind of similar then in that regard. I just thought she aged quicker but yours makes a lot more sense lol.
@@DecvsJapan basically, the story is, they're descendants of the rose, a group cursed with immortality, and they all have their own roles, they did a few "stories" about it (Ascendead Master, and The Revenant Choir) its really interesting imo

The Girugamesh meme got me into visual kei back in high-school and now I'm twenty seven listening to bands so obscure you have to scratch around weird Spanish websites for torrents of demo tapes that have like only five hundred released copies in existence.
Love this band Versailles & the lead singer Kamijo. I like that they have a sort of classical music/opera sound with a a rock edge to their sound. I cannot think of a US band that has a similar sound.

They're still Versailles and with all the members. Jupiter is another band. Jupiter had all Versailles members, except Kamijo, now only the guitarists from Versailles are Jupiter members.

@@DecvsJapan Visual Kei is an insane genre! I highly reccomend you check out Gackt! "Vanilla" and "Returner" are probably his most well-known songs, but I think "Arrow" is his best. But you have to listen to all four versions (normal, orchestral, instrumental, and orchestral instrumental) to truly appreciate it, in my opinion.

This bands name is pronounced Ver-sigh. The first time I watched Visual Kei music videos, I was really convinced some of the band members were woman too!
I have been listening to the band Unlucky Morpheus recently. I recomend their song Cadaver Revadec. They have a Visual Kei offspring band called Icarus cry's but they perform much better in their main band Unlucky Morpheus.
I also enjoy bands like Girugamesh, Matenrou Opera and Diaura. I reccomend those bands too :D

Girugamesh is fantastic, though, musically, I think they're several degrees more metal than other Visual Kei acts. Then again, Visual Kei is arguably more of an aesthetic genre than a musical genre.

I would like to recommend three old Visual Kei bands that no one reacts to and it would be interesting to see reactions. They are from the late 90's to early 2000's, an era that is referred to as old school Visual Kei, basically because it was in the 90's when Visual Kei music achived a more distinct sound and the last period when most emblematic VK bands disbanded.

You might see the song title as "Boku shimobe", but that was a minstranslation since the character 僕 can be read as both boku and shimobe, but it is specified that is read shimobe [しもべ].
Versailles is actually a french word/name...The Gazette is also a fench word/name dude same with moi dix moise or however it is spelled actually most japanese visual kei bands names are most of the time related to french words and names i said most not all but most.

This is not Victorian times, this is much older, Maria Antoinette/French revolution, 18th century time. Its the time period right before the classic or Napoleonic time, the time of Mozart & Haydn & late baroque music.
PPL in Victorian time wear more modern Tuxedos & top hats kinda thing.
& thats why the Band is called Versailles, & their style is inspired by Maria Antoinette, cuz Versailles is where the King of France had his Palace ~30Km from Paris.

Visual Kei is actually not about the music. More about the looks and expression.
Versailles is a Visual Kei band, but their music is Symphonic Metal, which is a metal genre that is also big in Europe with Nightwish, Epica or Within Temptation.
Each Visual Kei band has a different subgenre of music they play, mostly within rock or metal.
Actually the correct term should be j-rock (most fans use that term too). Like j-pop or k-pop. Altough not all j-rock bands are visual kei. (Babymetal is not visual kei for example. Or Dir en Grey had a period from 2007 to 2014 they stopped the visual kei look. Later on the vocalist started to adapt the look again).
Versailles was a good point to start. Great band. Also check out Dir en Grey, the Gazette, Girugamesh and Sadie.

Jasmine you was the original bass player of the band from 2007 to 2009. He (not she), died in 2009... The bassist who replaced him and is still there is Masashi.

Nothing against you but I'm sick and tired of all those people who react to visual kei and they act with such condescending tone. Why condescending? Because it's always the same "omg surprise, Japanese people can do metal and can do good music, what a shock" gesture when they listen to them.
Is it really that necessary to act surprised and make the emphasis on "wow they are good?" second of all... why is it with all of the people that react with comments such as "they look like an anime/video game... and they sound like that too" you live in Japan, you should know by now that they have more than anime and video games going around in there. The aesthetic of Versailles it's not of classic Japan but it got its root on kabuki and Noh and also on the things that you mentioned: glam rock, gothic, cyber and punk music which had similar elements, you by yourself mentioned it at the beginning of the video but retort to the same "omg an anime guy" type of commentary that people that are based outside from Japan. Also... now that I mentioned that, you said that they based on those genres but... didn't expect them to play metal? Like... why not?
The last part I do get that Japanese musicians play a lot with the androgynous bits which you actually mentioned before okay... yet, is it necessary to point at that Hizaki is or not a girl? And if so, is it necessary to point at that in case of being a woman, she would have been great... I find that comment slightly sexist. anyway. It's not your fault, it's just that this is all the same every single react and it's becoming disappointing to see that people do it like this.
Right, so having lived in Japan for 7 years I can tell you without doubt that 99% of the population do not know about Visual Kei. It is not even advertised anywhere and in CD shops there is a tiny section for it usually. If many people are saying the same thing about this style of music then maybe it's you that needs to reconsider your opinion. Food for thought. Why am I not allowed to guess the gender of someone? How is that at all sexist? Possibly might come across as rude to some people, but it's not sexist and I didn't mean for it to be. I was fascinated with what I was seeing and that's why a year later to the day I uploaded this I reacted to the same band because they got me into Japanese music.
Dec vs Japan First of all, I said it was nothing against you. Chill a tad(?) Second of all it doesn't have anything to be with "being or not in Japan" or "Japanese people knowing about them or not" I know that I work with Japanese people and I've visited Japan. Even if they don't know my commentary was not regarding "everyone knows about it" was about how blandly presented it is in general to say things like "they are all a bunch of anime characters playing instruments, and wow, they actually play well, who have thought?"
I even mentioned that you being in Japan should know that anime it's not the root of everything in there. It's their most successful product for foreigners and the "Cool Japan project" has proven that, but it's not everything. Visual Kei actually has more relation to traditional arts than to anime, to the level that they have a subgenre of visual kei ONLY for the anime part, if it was general they wouldn't have to divide it, don't you think?
I said that the comment was a bit sexist since you mentioned it as a surprise for "Hizaki" to be good at playing if he were a girl. It does not matter if you were surprised he dressed as a girl, it's the "girl that can play, amazing" part.
And I'm very glad that they got you into Vkei and Japanese music, they deserve the fans.
By the way, as a good fan that you are now, you have to realize that versailles is actually operatic metal, or more clearly
Symphonic/Neoclassical Power Metal, not exactly sure were your comparisons came from... but I mean I totally get it, I listen to Gojira and the only thing that comes to my mind is the Eiffel Tower and baguettes, you know since they're french.
I will reconsider my opinion about visual kei then, surely it's way better for me to think that all the subculture of the music it's reduced to that same characteristics once and over again. You're right.
