Same happened with me. Moreover, It wasn't updating even after being downloaded neither with iTunes! Then the last resort was to do a manual update :-
Download your choicest firmware online.
Connect your iPhone to iTunes.
Do a manual update by pressing shift+update, select the downloaded file & it gets going!
Don't worry, the firmware won't be a virus as it is verified while updating your device :)
