Thank you so much for following along and supporting my channel, this renovation is possible because of your support! Every like, comment, and view makes an impact. I’m so excited to share this journey with you!! Already daydreaming about adding seasonal touches to this kitchen!! 🤩❤️
I LOVE that you are making a point of keeping with the period of your home when choosing your renovation plans. I can’t abide seeing people with these beautiful older homes who turn the inside into some modern mess.
Although I enjoyed all of this very much, I think my favorite part was how sweet and kind you were to the existing cabinets. I don't know why I find it offensive when people buy an older home and then are so unkind about the existing parts of that old home and the way you said that "they've served the home well and it's time for them to retire" felt just so precious and sweet!
My husband’s and I used RTA for our kitchen. They were the best ! We went to all basic places first Lowe’s home depot, a few smaller companies. Lowe’s was the most expensive. And that was just for basic particle boards boxes . Everything we wanted would have been an upgrade that cost . Plus they would not give us the option to assemble them ourselves and install. ( FYI we were building our own retirement cabin. We knew how to build. ) We Found RTA our designer was great. He came up with idea I didn’t even think was possible. The cabinets are HIGH QUALITY plywood boxes. Hardware is all soft close and sturdy. We love them . And my husband had all of them put together with a few days working on them after work in his free time . There is a video they recommend on their website if you need help . We struggled with the corner lazy Susan Cabinet just a little. The prices was 1/4 of the cost of Al the other places , and that included delivery. I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone wanted to upgrade their kitchen. It’s going on 5 yrs now and they still look brand new . And no I don’t work for them lol 😂 but maybe I should . Lol
So excited for you! I imagine you're more than excited for this! Just seeing all the parts or rooms of your home that you've shared, and seeing what you've designed or drawed out for it, I know its going to be beautiful! That color cabinetry in a smaller space helps to make it look larger too. And the fact that you're keeping the age of the home in mind with the plans is awesome! I'm loving the black & white checkered floor, but I'm also partial to it. I had a home built back in the early/mid '90s and my entire kitchen was done in black & white. It was A rather large kitchen and the floor was black & white checkered! It was truly a beautiful floor, and it was probably my favorite room in that home! We did A black counter top with black & white ceramic tile backsplash in the checkered pattern, but it only went behind the stove up to the vent, but along the counter and behind the sink it was only 2 rows high, if that makes sense.. so that there wasn't so much checkered pattern going on. The black counter tops were beautiful with that floor! And we just went with oak cabinetry. With the room being so large, so many cabinets & white walls, white cabinets was just too much. But it really turned out to be a gorgeous kitchen! I love the look of tin ceiling tiles!! Truly excited to go thru this process with you, and thanks for sharing it with us!😊
Hang large sheets of plastic over all the doors going in and out of your work area, and also clean up scraps and wet mop every evening when finished for the day. We did during our renovation and it made a tremendous difference in the dirt that escaped into the rest of our home!
Yesss, such good advice!! We’ve been doing just that and it’s kept the rest of the house livable. Always such a pain to clean up after a long day of work but it’s worth it!
Yay! I’ve been watching the updates on instagram but waiting for a video with your design ideas. Can’t wait to see how this turns out, it’s going to be beautiful
Love your new kitchen design. Maybe you can use a freestanding old table in your kitchen instead of the island Thats what the old houses in Europe use for prep or entertaining That’s what I’d do. I really do not like islands.
Wonderful ideas for your new kitchen! Just something to think about. We completely gutted and remodeled our farm house 15 years ago. Brand knew everything, but kept the integrity of the time period of the home. When it came to our kitchen, I originally wanted tile. After talking to many friends who had been through the same thing, we opted for hardwood in the entire house including the kitchen and I have not regretted it at all. The thing that changed my mind was if you drop glasses, plates, anything breakable onto your tile floors, the chances of breaking a tile and definitely the dish or whatever will shatter every where. In many cases, if you drop a glass (if they are heavy) or a heavy dish or whatever on hardwood, it will not break. I have broken two tiles in our bathroom from dropping things and we had to replace which was a pain. Hardwood is also warmer in the winter months. So, we went with hardwood and the fact that it doesn't stain was a plus too if wine is spilled or something like that. Tile will definitely stain. Cleaning my hardwood floors is so easy and they shine just like the day we put them in. We went with real hardwood and not engineered flooring and installed it ourselves. Have fun with your remodel. We did and it went very smoothly because it was well thought out.
Ahh, thank you for sharing your insight. It’s been SO helpful hearing about other’s renovations and I sure hope ours continues to move along smoothly as yours did! We had some cracked tiles in our old house in the kitchen so that’s a great point to consider! Thank you for sharing!!
I've always loved the look of ceiling tiles.. and a black soapstone counter... the checkerboard wood stained flooring.. 💯!! Can't wait to see what you ultimately decide on!
Krysta. I am glad you are keeping your kitchen within in the period of your home. Your kitchen is going to beautiful. Thank you for sharing! So lovely!
Love old houses💙 we just renovated a number of old kitchens and baths. We have similar design aesthetic. We painted a harlequin floor pattern in our cottage. It had a huge learning curve 🤣 I love the counter to ceiling upper cabinets also💙
Oh, I keep hearing what a pain it is to do the harlequin floors… I’m sure frustration lies ahead. 😆 The end result is worth the work I’m sure, do you love yours??
@@KrystaMeeker first off I LOVE them !!!! I watched tons of videos and I think every situation has different needs. Also Everyone’s brain just functions differently 🤷🏻♀️. We wanted an old worn wood tone with an aged white harlequin patterned floor. I like a harlequin that is a diamond. I made an exact pattern and taped around it. Then I made a flexible pattern for edges the needed partial diamonds. Ram board works well for that. This really worked well for me. But still took a lot of time. I also sealed all my tape edges with flat out flat sealer by general finishes. I had very little bleed through🙌 best of luck. It’s a timeless design💙
Oh, this is gonna be a fun series to keep up with! I’m just about to get the keys to my new place and this video definitely gave me lots of ideas 🤩 I lean a little more “hobbit core” “cottagey” and my apartment is pretty modern so your whimsical chic (I hope you’re ok with that label 😂) is perfect for inspo.
Thank you for taking us on this journey with you. I am so excited for you. Your aesthetics have already given me lots of ideas over the last couple of years. Keep up the good work.
I love the quartzite option for your kitchen counters. Word of warning regarding black counters, especially if they have a shinier finish - they really show spots (water marks, smudges).
Hi Krysta- I also live in an older home and have been planning my kitchen remodel for two years now.( been redoing first floor). I have the same built ins with the exact same hardware!😆 I also have a kitchen with 3 entries- and is close to the size of yours. It is a huge struggle trying to figure out everything- very wise in using the help of a designer. I have a soffet over my sink and kitchen window. I am looking to covering my ceiling and soffet with bead board and crown molding. I also am purchasing shaker style cabinets. I also like making things my own space and purchased off marketplace the top of a hutch. It has three long 36 inch doors that I'm going to have installed on my one wall with corbels underneath. I am thin bricking my stack and utilizing wide plank vinyl floors. I am leaning into a French country vibe. Thrift ed some very old tin lined copper pots and pans that I will be hanging over the stove. Biggest problem is deciding countertops. That quartzite you showed was beautiful. Love the idea of tinning the ceiling ( just was in an antique shop that had it wow!) My house is 73 years old and plaster as well. Best of luck and look forward to watching your progress!
I used hex tile in my bathroom with black ground, so never looks dirty. Love the new outline you are going with. Definitely need something over the kitchen window if not changing the size. There are herb and plant growing windows that are really cool if looking for a new one. Love from Canada.
Ooh I love that octagonal black and white tiles. Gorgeous. I want the same tiles but the small octagonal pieces I want in a heritage dark green with the white.

This will be so much fun following your kitchen project! So many choices. Would you maybe think about a really dark green quartz/quartzite countertop? Love your style and attention to detail, your kitchen will be wonderful.
I am so freaking excited for you, it's my dream to have a custom kitchen one-day! Although I'm not long from, sadly, becoming an empty nester. So i may realize this dream in a tiny home at this point. Love this for you!
Enjoy the journey, it will be so much fun . Be careful with quartzite ,it’s worse than marble ! It stains with just water . I’m so sick about my beautiful countertop !
I really liked the stained checkered floor. If you find hardwood floors underneath the existing floors maybe you could do that kind of stained finish. That would be beautiful and a money saver. I’m sure whatever y’all decide on will look great.
New subscriber here. I love your plans for the kitchen. Have you considered a soft gray countertop? They look lovely with creamy cabinets and classic but not as harsh as black. They also hide crumbs/dust better.
I love all your ideas for the kitchen. You always seem so in control. We redid an old house years ago and I remember getting overwhelmed and crying sometime. Do you two ever feel that way? Hope not but I just wondered.
It’s such an overwhelming project!! No tears yet but it’s still early! Haha. I will say previous projects have frustrated me to tears so you are not alone. We’ve spent months planning and have prepared ourselves for the idea that it will all need redone and will take many months. I’m already finding having low expectations has been beneficial and we’ve been pleasantly surprised so far!
My husband calls all our projects "adventures". My advice keep your sense of humor during your "adventures". All your ideas made me sigh....such beauty awaits you & us. I love the makeover journey...especially when its someone elses😁just kidding💕
I follow the UA-cam channel New England Fine Living. Linda Smith Davis is a designer who has renovated several historic homes. In her last house in Massachusetts she installed soapstone countertops. She recently renovated her very old New Hampshire house and installed Carbo Brushed LG Viatera quartz. It looks exactly like soapstone!
Just a warning about black countertops- I knew someone who put black granite in their kitchen and regretted it because they said it always looked dusty/dirty- it shows everything. You already have black laminate, and I don't know if you've found that it looks dirtier than a whiter or neutral countertop. Of course, you're kitchen is smaller so maybe this is not an issue?
Thank you for the insight! I’ve definitely been seeing that as a big concern with dark countertops, will be taking that into consideration. I’ve heard honed or leathered is the better option for black to avoid the smudges and water droplets showing. It’s hard to tell on ours because of the material, plus this old kitchen always looks a little out of sorts. Haha.
Why do some lovely old homes have small kitchens? Maybe because back in the day, the architects were men that didn't understand what traditional housewives needed in the kitchen. My son-in-law is an architect, he does 50% of the cooking, he designed his kick-ass house with a wonderful kitchen!
I knooow, I imagine not having as many appliances and specifically not having large appliances like we do now maybe contributed to the size. We’ve got the wall opened up and the room looks so much more fitting for the house already! Sounds like your son-in-law did it right at their place!! 👏
Thank you so much for following along and supporting my channel, this renovation is possible because of your support! Every like, comment, and view makes an impact. I’m so excited to share this journey with you!! Already daydreaming about adding seasonal touches to this kitchen!! 🤩❤️

Thank you Sherry!! You know I’m ready to get to the decorating part, but the hard work comes first. 😅❤️
Congratulations. I look forward to watching the progress.
Thank you for following along!! ❤️
I know it’s none of my business but I love the hexagon in tile. I think the wood is too dark.
Black soapstone countertops…!
I love your videos and I think you have exquisite taste! 💖💖💖
Ahh, thank you!! 🥹❤️
@@KrystaMeeker I wish you the best of luck and "no tears". I think the project is going to turn out beautifully.
@@cecilia954 thank you!! 🙌
My husband calls all our projects "adventures". My advice keep your sense of humor during your "adventures". All your ideas made me sigh....such beauty awaits you & us. I love the makeover journey...especially when its someone elses😁just kidding💕
Haha!! It really is an adventure!! Love your advice to laugh it off and enjoy the ride, I think that’s the only way to make it out sane. 😂❤️
I have Taj Mahal quartz by pental, not the quartzite. 1/2 the price, looks fabulous in my kitchen and was well worth it.
Thank you, that’s good to know!! 🙌
As someone with a black counter top its so dirty. You see everything!
Haha.
I have been waiting!!!! The Instagram stories are lovely but I can't read the tiny font
Ahh, noted!! Yess, more to come here now that we’ve had some time to make a good amount of progress! ❤️
😁
I GOT BLACK GRANET AND IT SHOWS STRICKS NO MATTER WHAT I DO!
A black and white kitchen with a taupe top? Not sure…
