I have to thank you for this! I have this 161 in 1 cart. Worked great for a year and then after I did an RGB bypass on my AES, all of the sudden the sound only works for the first 30 minutes or so of gameplay with this multicart (authentic carts had no issues.) Then I noticed if I left the multicart sit for 10 minutes, it would work again. Seemed like a capacitor issue. After watching this video, I added the 22 uf cap you added and swapped the cheap caps for Nichicon caps and now it works perfectly again! I cannot tell you the number of things I tried to fix this issue with no success...until this! My multicart works perfectly again and I'm now subbed to your channel. Great work!
I have an issue with lines in most of the games’ graphics myself. Hoping there’s a repair for that!
The NEO-GEO was a stupendously good machine for it's day. It's awesomeness matched only by it's price. I remember reading about them in a magazine and I couldn't believe the size & cost of the game carts. To this day, I've still never seen a NEO-GEO in real life (I did have a quick go on a NEO-GEO pocket that a friend of mine showed me), I've only ever played Metal Slug on an arcade cabinet version that they used to have in the Roadhouse in Manchester.
Yes, they were so bloomin expensive!!! I had a friend that knew someone, that knew someone that had an AES, and I often played on an MVS in the arcade but could only dream of ever getting my hands on a real MVS or AES. They were kinda like the Ferrari of gaming back then!
I had one, imported it from Hong Kong. Sold it to pay for car insurance!!
It was a stupendously good machine, ruined by goddamned fighting games! God how I wish SNK, Alpha Denshi etc had continued to make action platformers, shooters and beat em ups. Most beat em ups on the NG were average, but they never progressed past 1992, so no wonder. Top Hunter was one of the last if not the last SNK action platformer and it was a huge step up from the likes of Ninja Combat etc. If only other genres had progressed as well :(

I have a re-capped AES system. I would love to use it more. Also have an MVS but it needs a new Jamma board. As a kid I would drool over having one of those systems. I’ve only got the AES recently and I’m in my 50s now. They’re still amazing even though they’re pretty old.

I've been watching those multi game MVS carts for about 15 years now. The 50in1, 76in1, 99in1, 120in1, etc.. I see how they mix them out.. Some of them will have a few of the classics (Baseball Stars, Cyber-Lip, Top Player's Golf), but will be missing games such as, Baseball Stars 2, NAM-1975, Magician Lord, and and don't get me started on a of the hacks of each.. KOF*.*, Meal Slug 6, and on and on. I believe this was a strategy the Chinese sellers would utilize to get people to buy multiple carts, to try and attempt to get the most games. I imagine , if they wanted to, they could create 1 perfect Neo-Geo AES cartridge. With all 157 commercially available games on it. And cut out all of the hacked nonsense. If they priced something like that at $100-$150, they would sell insane amounts of them. But instead they are still quite happy selling inferior quality bootlegs.
Furrtek recently made a new batch of those converters, you might be able to grab one if you hurry.
You're right. There are only a handfull of games on the AES version 161-in-1 that don't work. Most everything works and I can play every King of Fighters except Garou: Mark of the Wolves and King of Fighters 94 which do have problems and I can live with that. I already have KOF 94 for AES because it's one of those super cheap but really good games that you grab after first purchasing an AES. I bought it mainly for easy access to Pulstar, Mutation Nation, Last Resort, Blazing Star, Aero fighters 3, Sengoku 3 and the Metal Slug Series which all work perfectly.

Its possible. I think the flash in there is simply reused from near end of write cycle life stocks.
@@Ojref1 neogedev wiki says that these 55LV100S are some uncommon Fujitsu parts likely salvaged from old Excite pachislot machines. Thank to the adapter boards, one could likely either program them or substitute them with alternative flash chips.
I wonder if you could make a simpler and less expensive version if you used SRAM chips like MiSTer does and load the ROMs into RAM from a SD card. It would be slower to boot as it will have to hold the console in reset until the load was complete but at least it would be easier to change the ROMs on the cart.
Yes, that's definitely possible! That's exactly what I came up with for the Atari Lynx before those type of flash carts were created.
Which revision of the AES are you using in this demo ?

I am not sure on the board revision, but its the early model that has the PRO-B0 and PRO-C0 chips, and requires 5v PSU. The later boards need a 9V PSU. I suspect this 161 in 1 will work with the later boards btw!

I assumed you tested with a revision 3-5 (11v) as I could see the checkerboard effect on the video.
Anyway, are these cartridges safe in term of voltage for the AES ?
I considered to pick one but dont want to blow my system.

Hi there, I have this exact cart and I have an issue with lines in certain layers of most games’ graphics. The fellow I bought the cart from did warn me about this but he didn’t say MOST of the games are affected. Might it be possible to ship to you (from Canada) to repair? I have opened the cart and done basic cleaning, but that’s about the limit of my knowledge base. Thanks, Zac
=/ Sorry I cannot offer customer repairs! The chances are with this it will be either a bad solder point on one of the CPLDs / flash ROM, or an actual fault with CPLD / flash ROM. You could inspect the solder points with good magnification and see if any look bad, perhaps get some good flux on there and reflow them.

If its the older version with Pro chipset - yes, but most of the time the caps are OK on them!

Technically, there is a risk yes! But from my own personal experience I've had no problems (yet)... Multicarts that use 3.3v logic with no level translation means the 5v chips on the Neo Geo can have their outputs clamped by protection diodes in the 3.3v logic - over a period of time, that could cause a fault. From my experience you tend to find if there is a fault develops, its often at the flash cart side. But it is possible something in the Neo Geo could die. I think the reason this seldom causes a problem is the fact that the IO pins toggle at high frequency for the most part, rather than sitting in a high state where excess current could get drawn through those protection diodes, and in that case potentially stress out transistors in the IO pins.

In order for this 161 cart to work do you have to use a stronger adapter because mine's wouldn't work when I try to use the regular adapter it will come on the it will shut off🎮🕹😀👍🏾
If you have the 9v model - perhaps yes! My AES is the earlier 5v model.

Will these carts or repros damage the aes console??
Some would say yes, and technically it could put stress on clamping build into ICs, but in practice it seems to not be the huge risk others would lead you to believe. I've used flash cards on lots of things, for long periods and never had a problem. That doesnt mean I wont have a problem one day, but my take on it here is that its low risk.

I think I use the same PSU and it works OK. You will probably need to get that PSU recapped if you haven't already! The capacitors in those power supplies always leak!

I've read from someone who has one that many of the audio issues and the bullet glitch in aero fighters have been fixed also that it supports pick n mix again. I have one on the way myself and will be testing it as well. I don't have a unibios in my neogeo so I won't be able to confirm pick n mix though.
@@GadgetUK164 So I got my v3 cart and the game list is the same and mark of the wolves and aero fighters 3 still have their issues. But the graphics and audio glitchs in the rest of the games like metal slug 3 have been fixed.
Ok i went back to mark of the wolves and tried it again and while i wouldn't say its fixed but what happened is stranger. I preformed hoon's command move that freezes the game and saw it froze again and left to go to the bathroom. When i came back the game was running again and while it doesn't freeze when the move is preformed anymore its shows a single frame of his down state between the end of the move and his standing position. Other than that it plays normally even after hard restarting only freezing again temporarily if another game is loaded then garuo played again after that.

Do you mean MVS systems? I dont see any AES systems on AliExpress - I do see the carts though. The MVS for sale on there are usually original hardware yes, but sometimes repaired, and the complete cased systems have some mods etc.

IS THIS VERSION 1, 2, OR 3 ?
VERSION 1 - version 2 and 3 are prety much exactly the same except for one or two differences. ie. main game line up is pretty much identical. I know version 2 and 3 have Metal Slug 2 Turbo I think, that's the only change I am aware of.
What I never will understand is why using this 161 game carts. Same as using an emulator and play it elsewhere. The whole feeling is gone. For this I dont need an original MVS or AES hardware. Before using this multicart I use emulation and have the same result 100 %
It isnt using emulation, it has copies of all the original ROMs (hacked in a few games), running on actual hardware. Except for KoF2003, they all run just like the real cart.
