  • Want to be a Physician Assistant however you're still in high school or early college? Watch this video.
    Hey! My name is John and I'm a board certified Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant. If you want Pre-PA content or PA school videos, consider subscribing to my channel! I'll also be doing wealth and finance related videos on my channel. My goal is for you to succeed both professionally and financially! We're on this journey together.
    My advice for high school students is simple... your high school grades serve as a purpose to get into a college of your choice and possibly earn scholarships. Many of your high school achievements have lesser weigh than accomplishments in college. Don't overburden yourself with looking into patient care experiences. You could consider shadowing. But the most important thing is planning. Where are you going to school? When in school what major do you want and how will you get all of your prerequisite PA school courses? When you're in college focus on your grades and clubs/extracurricular activities that you enjoy and that will set you apart from other candidates. Have fun in college. It all sounds so simple but time flies and that's truly my advice on this topic.

    Hello! I’m so glad I found your page and I was able to subscribe, I have a question that maybe you or any of the commenters can answer. I’m applying this cycle and I took a&p 9 years ago. I’m only applying to schools that allow a 10 year time frame for prereq classes. I plan on retaking the class this summer to have it be more current, after I submit my application in the spring. Some schools require that all your prereqs are met before submitting application. My question is, can I tailor my application for each school I apply to in CASPA? For example, can I say that I “plan on retaking A&P class” with the schools that allow a outstanding prereq and with the schools that don’t allow an outstanding prereq I just use the a&p class that I took 9 years ago? Is that allowed or will saying that I plan to retaking a&p in the summer automatically count it for all schools and therefore disqualifying me from schools that require all prereqs to be met before submitting an application?

    Great video 🙌🙌 what’s the difference between a PA in EM vs a PA on a trauma team ? Is there a difference do PA’s actually assist in surgery or are they under the “med student” ? Always wondered thanks again !

      Trauma PA responds to trauma codes / pages in the ER and usually helps manage some portion of inpatient trauma cases / clinic days. There may or may not be a surgical component. ER PA staffs only the ER. A PA in surgery is usually only there to 2nd assist. Depending on the case, if there's a resident or two surgeons they may not even need the PA to scrub in. A med student or PA student typically is a 3rd or observer for a surgical case case and wouldn't give a PA or Resident anything to do as they're learning.

    Hi John,
    I will be starting college as a freshman at 33 years old. I intend to become a PA. I am absolutely worried about being the class grandpa. In your experience, did you have any classmates who were in their late thirties to early forties? If so, what was their success rate?

    • @JohnThePA
      @JohnThePA  2 роки тому

      Class grandpa that's a new term haha! We had maybe a good 15-20% of our class in their 30's and 40's, most already with a spouse/kids and all excited for a new career. You won't be out of place. The average age for PA school is around 26 years old with some coming in younger and some older. People still work together in class and befriend one another regardless of age. All but one of the older students completed the program. There's maybe some adjusting to being back in the classroom if it has been a while, but you get used to it cause you're there all day. On the bright side, you won't have to worry about patients saying you're "so young" and trying to hook you up with their grandkids when you're finished.
