  • This skill video demonstrates the steps for attacking an interior fire.
    Direct Method
    1. Gain access to aircraft interior.
    2. Advance the handline toward fire maneuvering around obstacles, as needed.
NOTE: Both firefighters should be on the same side of the handline.
    3. Ensure proper nozzle pattern for fire/fuel conditions prior to opening the nozzle.
    4. Open the nozzle slowly to avoid nozzle reaction.
    5. Aim the agent stream at the base of the fire.
    6. Sweep the agent stream from side-to-side extending beyond the edge of the fire to each side.
    7. Adjust the nozzle pattern as needed based upon fire/fuel conditions.
    NOTE: Practice agent conservation.
    8. Maneuver the handline and nozzle as necessary.
    9. Stop discharging when the fire is extinguished or the fuel surface has been covered with a foam layer.
    10. Shut off the nozzle slowly to reduce water hammer.
    11. Ventilate the fuselage to remove heat and other products of combustion.
    12. Back away from the fire. Always maintain situational awareness of area for signs of reignition.
    Indirect Method
    4. Open the nozzle slowly to avoid water hammer.
    5. Aim the agent stream above the fire or deflect it off of aircraft surfaces.
    6. Sweep the agent stream from side-to-side extending beyond the edge of the fire to each side.
    7. Adjust nozzle pattern as needed based upon fire/fuel conditions.
    NOTE: Practice agent conservation.
    8. Maneuver the handline and nozzle as necessary.
    9. Stop discharging when the fire is extinguished or the fuel surface has been covered with a foam layer.
    10. Shut off the nozzle slowly to reduce water hammer.
    CAUTION: Close the nozzle
    11. Ventilate the fuselage to remove heat and other products of combustion.
    12. Back away from the fire. Always maintain situational awareness of area for signs of reignition.
    Combination Method
    4. Open the nozzle slowly to avoid water hammer.
    5. Open the dry chemical nozzle, if so equipped.
    6. Aim the agent stream(s) at the base of the fire.
    7. Sweep the agent stream(s) across the fuel’s surface to one side.
    8. Then raise and aim the agent stream(s) above the fire or deflect it off of surfaces while sweeping to the other side of the fire.
    9. Sweep the agent stream(s) back across the base of the fire then back above.
    a. Repeat as necessary.
    b. Adjust nozzle pattern as needed based upon fire/fuel conditions.
    NOTE: Practice agent conservation.
    10. Maneuver handline and nozzle as necessary.
    11. Stop discharging when the fire is extinguished or the fuel surface has been covered with a foam layer.
    12. Close the nozzle(s) slowly to reduce water hammer.
    13. Ventilate the fuselage to remove heat and other products of combustion.
    14. Back away from the fire. Always maintain situational awareness of area for signs of reignition.
