Wow! Imagine having SO much money that you have an incredibly luxurious mansion, and you only use it for a few weeks in summer! That rococo ballroom blows my mind, it is huge! Makes me think of ballroom scenes in old Merchant-Ivory movies. Great presentation. So glad 2 of the mansions survive.
They both are Incredibly beautiful. Different taste and style but absolutely breathtaking...thankfully the heirs understand what they have and they are well cared for. Thanks again for sharing
Great video Ken. I`ve never heard of the Goelet brothers but Ochre Court was my favorite. Thank goodness Newport had enough sense to keep the mansions and not demolish them like New York City did.
I feel like those occasions would be so tightly choreographed that it would be bad form to take part in a conversation with anyone more than a few seats away. Otherwise, the room would be a roar! Doesn't sound fun to me, but then again, I don't even know 200 people.
If you ever get a chance to vacation in or near Newport Rhode Island in the summer, it's fun, relaxing, and beautiful. It's fun to tour the mansions, and the cliff walk is a beautiful stroll. The beaches are great. What a dream it would have been to live in one of those mansions on the ocean dancing in the ballroom with the gentle seabreeze blowing through. If you love Calamari, it's the freshest. I used to have a place in Rhode Island. I miss it.
I've always loved Southside, because it was Shingle Style. You can (or could) see it from the Cliff Walk. I loved the rectangular decorative panels on the seaside facade. I guess because Ochre Court is owned by the college, I wasn't really aware of it. I also love the Victorian Society in America, and used to be a member.
I'm not sure if the university still does this, but they allow(ed) you to tour the first floor of Ochre Court during the summer months if you ask politely. Now all that is there is the magnificent original architecture but not the furniture. Still worth the time. Excellent video.
Another great video, I would definitely prefer living in Southside. Delightful to see they are both still standing. Interesting that the video was sponsored by the VSA, I believe their Newport Summer School includes a tour of Ochre Court!
I wonder if Ochre Point, donated to Salve Regina College, is the same house implied in the 1956 film, "High Society." Grace Kelly's uncle decides to donate the house when he couldn't find anyone to buy it.
A STRANGE MIX, BUT TO BE EXPECTED I WOULD SAY!!!!!!!!!! THE THREE KEY WORDS IN REAL ESTATE APPLY IN MANHATTAN, (DEMOLITION, DEMOLITION, DEMOLITION), WHILE THE PRETTY PLACES OF NEWPORT, WHICH SHOULD BE DECLARED A DEMOLITION FREE ZONE IMMEDIATELY, HAVE BEEN PRESERVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's wonderful the two mansions in Newport have survived!
Ochre Court interior is just stunning. Beautiful.

Southside was nice, both inside and out! Ocher Court looked more like a museum inside! Congrats on the sponsor!
Another great video, thank you
A table for 200 guests? Wow, you would need a telephone to have a conversation with someone sitting at the other end of the table. 😉🙂🙄

Amazing that one of the houses is still in the family. Imagine the traditions in that home.
Takes the term "sibling rivalry" to a very different level!

For me, Southside, is McKim, Meade and White's refined relaxation at it's finest.

Both cottages are beautiful! The nicest thing is they BOTH continue to stand. YAY.

I love your videos. You do such a wonderful job.
200 guest dining table? WOW!! Great video and thank you! 😃
These elegant old mansions are works of art. Too bad so many of them have been demolished.
Its beautiful , you would need a large staff to take care of this.
I use to live on Bellevue Ave. These houses were my neighbors. I lived in a converted mansion that were made into condos. I miss Newport
That southside mansion is so lovely
It would be extremely interesting to find out how many families of the original builders of these Newport “cottages” were still owned them 🤔

"Please pass the salt" ... 3 days later ... Still waiting. 😆

Oh, those modest country cottages. You do a good job Ken.
Somedays I feel like I'm pretty under classed to your average viewers.
Definitely prefer Southside/Seaside. Looks more comfortable. The other house seems like a museum.
The chateau Ogden Court. Crystal chandeliers ❤❤❤❤❤❤. But MY LIBRARY WOULD HAVE BOOKS
I'd like to know where in the US you could today build Southside for $2.2 million..................
I guess I don't like wood paneling as much as I used to, it makes the rooms look so heavy.

Hasn't Salve Regina U sold Ochre Court to return to a single family residence?
A library with no books? 🧐 Not my favorite room this time!
So you take your son to America and abandon him? Some father.
I think the name is pronounced “goo-lay”.
no it isn't, but he was mispronouncing it as well
Wow, you sure talked fast. I could hardly keep up with what you said...
This is wonderful n all but I’m sure there were people starving to death while these guys were trying to out do each other. Kinda messed up.
