Ann is such a great character because her entire personality includes some of the best qualities of previous Persona characters. The energy (and appitite) of Chie, the glamor of Rise, the secret timidness of Naoto, the unintentional clumsiness and silliness of Yukiko. I hate to be "That Guy" but some of the other characters in P5 seem to be, for the most part, designed to fill a certain anime or fictional trope. Ann feels the most human out of the Phantom Thieves because she has so many traits that define her instead of just being "the shy little sister" or the "smart but anti-social girl" or the "rich but doesn't wanna be rich" tropes. Of course, it's kind of unfair to describe the other characters so simply. But the fact that Ann was expected to just simply meet the "Sexy Girl" trope but then emerge with some of the most fun and interesting character development in the game was a big shock to me. Most confidant stories in the game are basically the same. Character requires social stat to talk to, asshole tries to ruin their life, you change that asshole's heart, romance option, done. Ann's isnt like that. You don't change anyone's heart. You help Ann find herself and how to deal with her own problems, not as a Phantom Thief, but as a person. You help her build herself up into someone she is proud to be, not just for her own sake, but for her best friend's as well. Shiho's recovery gave Ann a reason to change herself. And tbh, I bet she could have done it even without Joker's help. But Joker being there to support her motivated her even more. Even without romancing her, Joker and Ann's friendship is such a wholsome one. But also, the friendship option is worded so poorly... "You have the others" as if Joker wasn't there for her the whole damn time... Anyone in Joker's position at Rank 9 would have said "You have me" even if they didn't intend to date her! But after everything these two went through up until then, of course they would fall in love with each other! People as handsome and pretty as these two are never "just friends" for very long. Even excluding the amount of trust they already have in each other, it's impossible for at least one of them to catch feelings for the other! The point is, Ann is one of my favorite characters in the franchise because she can't be defined by a certain "type" like most characters in Japanese fiction can. Even for Persona standards, she is a very above average character, which is very high praise! No wonder Joker can't stop looking at her almost every chance he gets in the base game, so were we! 🥰 Congratulations, you reached the end of my Documentary on Ann Takamaki. Ann beats her by a long shot. Makoto’s confidant doesn’t develop her story at all, it’s just boring student council president shit that I honesty don’t care about. While you could say Ann is the same with her agency, at least we either get part of the confidant with just her and her talking about Shiho (which I find cool) or we get to see her character after she’s done with her model stuff
