Here's a bit of history you might want to explore. My next door neighbor and father to my best friend growing up was one of the first black officers to command a company in combat. Unfortunately, his company was overrun by the Chinese at Chosin Reservoir. They held until they ran out of ammunition. They tried to surrender but the Chinese started bayoneting the soldiers. Mr. Jackson and a handful of survivors managed to escape the massacre. They hid during the day and moved south at night. During the fight Mr. Jackson was hit in the leg by fragments of a mortar round so walking was an unpleasant experience for him. It took them a month but they finally made it out of hostile territory. When he contacted his parents he learned that he had been listed as Missing in Action presumed dead. His injuries where such that he would never be able to serve again. He returned home to Virginia where he founded a construction company that would one day help build the DC metro system. I'm hoping you find this story interesting and make a video about Captain Paul Jackson. He was one of many heroes I had the pressure of meeting when I was young.

Thanks for posting this - TG he made it out. It is unfortunately not too surprising that an Asian enemy would murder prisoners. You seldom hear about the Viet Cong yet they nearly always killed everyone even in hospitals. Of course then there were the Japanese - which wrere the worst of all.

As a kid I had a black teacher who was at chosin who lost most of his right foot and 2 fingers to frostbite, he also had a bullet wound in his shoulder. He said he hid in a pit of slush and freezing water until he and one other was able to sneak out. He was a machine gunner, and he lost several friends in that battle. Unfortunately I don’t remember what unit he served in.

@@TheMrgoodmanners I think as far as narratives go, there was greater crimes like the Malmedy Massacre in the BoB, and that no one was caught. Other than war crime trivia, it doesn't contribute much to the greater conflict of the area.
In terms of historical representation, I imagine the fact that the U.S. Army was extremely callous about under-representing African American contributions, that validating them by discussing the crimes would go against the status quo and that talking about it now discredits the actions of the past leadership.
Similar to the many thousands of Korean refugees that the Army murdered, and subsequently denied despite literally seeing documentation of such during inquiries about it. The US Army had a huge integrity problem that still persists.

The two nation's built strong bond's that harden every year.
Anzac troops rarely get any attention...kind of like Canadian's.
All nation's were disscussed at length as each one was important to the overall war effort.
If it weren't for the American industrial capacity it would be a very different story & it's thing's such as this that get overlooked.
      All allied forces were covered.
I was very careful about the subject of axis force's. I didn't want to perpetuate hatred & prejudice.
The really horrible stuff had to wait till she was older when I could out it into historical context.
It's past time the shaming of German people is stopped, enough with the guilt trip & hate.
Accept the past but never forget
what can happen to decent people in time's of strife & an
easy answer is offered... There's always the fine print filled with disclaimers.

My father served in the US Army 106 Infantry Division 423rd Regiment and was forced to retreat from the battle after running out of ammunition and food. He recalled crossing a bridge and marching to a wooded area, where they took up positions, while remaining elements of the 333rd artillery covered their retreat. He was later captured the 20th and sat out the war as a POW. The 106th was the last division created in the states, but before they arrived in Europe, 60% of their personnel had been removed from their ranks and sent as replacements to units already there. When they arrived in England, their replacement were cooks, clerks, Military Police, truck drivers. When they went up to the line, their weapons were still on the boats waiting to be unloaded. The 106th's equipment and personnel were cannibalized, and if hadn't been for the 155 MM howitzers which cover ed their retreat I might not be here. Thanks 333rd

A massacre to trips who had not yet learned to increase dispersion. They could not longer lie on the ground to decrease blast radius but were brutally murdered from above. So the new weapon caused surprise and a change in tactics. No surprise that the artillery units paid the price. A response to the proximity shell.

It also has sadly given rise to the myth here in America that we and the Brits beat the Germans virtually every time apart from Market Garden. The Italian Campaign was absolutely brutal with a number of setbacks, and Hurtgen was a total disaster for us. We were FAR from invincible, and we paid the price for getting overconfident and cocky. Thank goodness we recovered at the Battle of the Bulge.

    • @thepinkplushie
      @thepinkplushie 2 роки тому +8

@@thunderbird1921 Likewise the Soviets suffered defeats right up until the final months. Many reasons of course. Hitler demanded increasing sacrifice and soldiers became more and more paranoid about disobeying orders. Many saw some dignity in dying to the enemy but none in being executed by their own men. But also the Allies share some of the blame, as they began a race of East vs. West, attempting to seize as much land as possible in the shortest timeframe. This led to many entirely pointless minor disasters that could have been avoided. That said it's important to remember that every day the war continued, more Jews and Roma were being slaughtered. The death numbers actually increased until the very end of the war where the logistics systems of the camps had so totally collapsed that they simply could not keep up the pace. So there is something to be said that while many situations were perceived to be pointless deaths, the sacrifices made by soldiers saved the lives of many thousands who may have otherwise been systematically killed.
Complicated topic, and indeed one that isn't talked about enough, with the perception of the last 2 years of the war being a series of endless allied victories dominating the narrative. Then you have the other extreme, which is those who overblow things like the battle of the bulge, which very much was a last gasp of the German army, and which was pretty objectively a horrible idea stoked by Hitler's ego rather than any actual strategy.

@@thepinkplushie What one has to understand is that the Germans won pretty much every battle where they weren't severely outnumbered (or completely battered by Allied air or artillery superiority) throughout the war, even during its later parts. Their army was simply superior, because it combined the well trained soldiers of the western nations with the brutal discipline of the soviets. German soldiers were, and there's little discussion about that, the best in the world during WW2. They only lost because the allies VASTLY outnumbered them and because the German economy was unable to provide sufficient supplies for the army to keep functioning (and also because Hitler's and the OHL's strategy was stupid). It was a mixture of the American economy and the endless supply of soldiers that the soviets could muster that won the war, certainly not better soldiers/armies.
