You can easily go back to the beginning of the Kohl government 42 years ago and you will come across the same problems. Environmental problems, public transport problems, labor market problems, housing market problems, energy supply problems, etc. The nice thing is that you can watch all of this here on YT in the old news broadcasts. The only thing we have gotten rid of is the nuclear energy problem, except of course for the question of final storage, which we have been grappling with for at least 50 years. So ultimately only a partial solution. And the German question that has been solved was only solved by chance and with a lot of luck...
Hi Joel, I just saw your video and it made me happy. I am impressed that you, a US citizen, not only know Volker Pispers, but also go deep in his political satire and share your thoughts with us. Thank you! I grew up in Germany (now living in France) and loved seeing Volker Pispers on stage. His satire hits hard, it gets to the point. I regret that he has retired since 2015. Sometimes I wonder what Pispers would say about the world today. Your channel is really interesting. Like you I enjoy learning about the differences between cultures and countries, and I spend hours watching videos on UA-cam about the US. I look forward to seeing more videos of you. Many greetings
Volker picked up his penchant for black humour while working as a translator in England after graduating in theology and pedagogy. He has a firm bedrock of knowledge and intellectual vigour underpinning his comedy. This is why he's been so popular for so many years.
Pispers also has a bit about TEACHERS ... which has an analogy "do you educate bakers for three years in the THEORY ... only to then notice that they have an allergy against flour?"
@MoreJps Next time you're in Germany, let me know and I'll get you tickets for Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion so you can experience the atmosphere live. Best wishes from Dortmund
Perhaps a good follow-up on this would be dutch historian Rutger Bregman's take on poverty on youtube:"Poverty isn't a lack of character, but a lack of cash"
@@dietrikstein1871 Rutger Bregman created quite some sensation at the World Economics Forum in Davos, 2019 by stating in a typical Dutch direct way it should be about taxes instead of philantropy.
Based off the subtitles i personally wouldn't have much of a clue about whats going on. So its pretty evident that you become pretty adept in understaning the language. And even for a native speaker this isn't easy to understand. It took me a while to pick up on what hes talking about in his shows and im still learning to be honest. Keep it up 👍
Pispers is really unbeaten, I whished he would still be active instead of retired! And as always the translation was bad.... such a pity. (Small example: The automatic translator doesn't get the difference between the German "formal you" and informal you. When Pispers uses the formal You, it translates it to "they" instead of you.)
If you like Volker Pispers than George Schramm should be next. His satire is art of the word. For a little context: George Schramm appears in three characters with which he portrays certain sections of society. There is "Lothar Dombrowski" - the Prussian pensioner and war veteran, recognizable by his gloved hand. Then "General Sanftleben" - retired Bundeswehr general. And "August" - a simple man, uneducated and an old SPD member. Here's a link with subtitles: ua-cam.com/video/5Or8ee1_168/v-deo.htmlsi=U9FpsdcXkowR_BL4 With love from Germany ❤🤘🏻
He's really brilliant,- absolutely true, but why has he retreated from doing political cabaret about a decade ago?,-pitty! Strangely you don't see such high quality stuff on german television any more, .apparently something has changed since the end of 2019. Hony soit qui mal y pense.... To understand good German humor and their mentality you might look at some sketches ore movies of Loriot. Regards from Freiburg, I love your work! Joachim.
This Pispers clip is from the good times of German Kabarett ("Kabarett" means political comedy). Sadly Pispers retired years ago. The only one from that period who is still doing shows is Urban Priol. Pispers most important catchphrase refers to the stupid German saying "Leistung lohnt sich" (Performance (in the sense of work) pays off). He said: "If performance paid off, Germany would be a country full of rich nurses, delivery drivers etc." And that sums it all up very well. I work as a translator. I have translated annual financial reports etc. in which companies reported their highest ever achieved profits but at the same time annouced salary cuts to reduce costs. And of course, they talked about the salaries of the workers who do the actually work, and not the Board of directors etc.
Pispers speaks so fast. Even for a German it is a bit hard to follow. But only reading the subtitles? I couldn't. So props to this guy following along. He's got a fast mind. Or I am just getting old.😂
It is so true if these managerial consultants are so clever .Why are they not managing their own company ? He did say price when talking about Aldi and Lidl ,prior to it coming up in the text .
you can have that! He made a brillant show about election, about Merkel (many). The only thing is it's in German with German. Politicians, you had to know them/their names to understand the satire/joke, he made. But the election stuff was great😃
Früher hieß es: Wer nichts wird, wird Wirt .... heute hat man BWL studiert... In the past, it was said: If you don't become anything, you become an inn owner .... today you studied business administration ... (The pun only works properiy in german)
Pispers said he needed a break from satire in 2016, adding he didn't know if he'd ever return to the stage. For a short time he did some radio programm shorts, then phased out of those, too. His brilliant mind and clear analysis of the political situation and its figures plus his political stance are deeply missed. Yes, there are other good satirists like Max Uthoff and Klaus von Wagner (to name just a few) but Pispers' personal style and his astonishing ability to make 2 1/2 hour long programms cramped with accurate facts and figures of great political importance and scope and peppered with his satirical punchlines, has really set an extremely high standard which hardly anybody was able to reach yet. I followed his programms over the years and watched him on stage several times. You would notice that it really got to him that all his efforts to initiate change and enlighten people were for naught. You would notice those flashs of desperation and frustration throughout his programms when he didn't hold back any longer after 2 hours of playing his programm. I think for him personally it was a good and sound choice to end his career, because otherwise he'd certainly suffered a burnout or worse. For society however, his choice was a great loss and I can't overstate how much he is missed.
9:27 '...but I wanna hear about what he thinks about specific...German government and things like that...' well, Volker Pispers stopped his stand-up comedy roughly 10yrs ago. he started in the early 1980s and talked about a wide range of political topics like health care, taxation, pensions etc and linked it to prominent politicians. he started to mention Angela Merkel even before she became chancellor. he made no secret about his opinion of her.
I love the german language. The german words for "Börse" (stock exchange) and "Böse" (evil) differs only in just one single letter. And Alfred Nobel turned in his grave, when he learned, that those business con man named their fake price after him! There's a reason, why Nobel didn't include "business science" in his charity nominations. You didn't know ? The "Nobel Price" for "business science" is no a Nobel Price, but a Price given by financial institutes. Just named after and given at the same date as the Nobel Prices. (ok, what's science ? Science is a sucessful prediction of the same results due to ever the same preconditions, every time. Let's put that to the stock market! And while this could overall result to a valid prediction of stock markets, us all are still quite unsuccsessful at the that. Because after all, it's not a science but just gambling. And that's why Nobel didnt gave a price for it.)
At 3:10 he compares two things with business consultants, first rats in sewers and second eunuchs - they KNOW how to do it (but…) This is really hard to translate with all the quick jokes.
I really do love your videos, especially because your IQ is obviously way above average. Unfortunately, there is always a problem translating a joke, satire or comedy into another language. It's not just the automatic translation program that is hopelessly overtaxed. Very often words are used that have multiple meanings. And only those who understand that will understand the joke. In addition, sarcasm or irony usually depend on the emphasis of certain words or parts of a sentence. Depending on which word is emphasized, one and the same sentence can have a completely different meaning. And that's another reason why CC subtitles can't do the job correctly. By the way, the V in Volker's name is pronounced like an F. Greetings and love from Germany, Sabine
You have to keep in mind, that this was short after the 2000 stock crash. Okay, and before the 2007/8 crash and the following years of financial desasters. And why don't we wonder why there get thousands of billions of money lost every now and then once or twice a decade? With money it is like with energy, it never gets lost, just somebody else is owning it. If you understand that, you'll understand where billionaires come from.
Have you even thought of the "education" your police "officers" have gotten? What kind of payment would represent that? Your cops here wouldn't even be allowed to assist the Police like the security on train station platforms.Or on pop concerts. I never got it, that they are even called officers. To name yourself or better to be entitled as a police officer here, you would need an academic grade after the normal 3 years police education, wich here is simply called Polizist after that 3 years.
The USA's handling of international relations are (let's use the present tense here) definitely not the best in the Middle East. But they also aren't the best in Africa. Or in Asia. Or Russia. They've always been particularly horrifying in South America. But I guess European elites are happy with them? 🤗
I once worked for a huge multinational investment firm , and they conducted similar nonsense research to find out why other firms were sending their call centered to India. Surprise surprise it's cos the labour is cheaper... As everyone knows, but they had to conduct a HUGE study with consultants, analysts etc to get the answer at a cost of MILLIONS! 😂😂🤦
