    All about the accident that put me in the hospital because my horse was scared by another competitor accidentally at the show, went running, my saddle slipped, and I fell. Despite wearing a helmet, I nearly died with a fractured skull and multiple brain hemorrhages. In this video, I open up about what happened and show you the helmet I was wearing. I am so grateful to everyone helping pitch in for the financial costs to care for the horses and other animals we have while I am not able to work like I usually do through the go fund me page made by my friend, Jess, while I was in the ICU and unaware of what was going on. I don't have a memory of the first week in hospital.

    I can't believe someone is actually whipping a green mustang! That should be a disqualifying action, IMHO. You're not the only experienced rider who's benefitted from a helmet. Glad you're healing. Yvonne from Fresian Horses also had a fall just over a year ago, so we've been seeing her recovery as well.

    Also an RN. I worked 16 years in rehab and traumatic brain injuries. Since you are noticing sounds and lights are affecting you, as well as therapies for movement and speech, please make sure your healthcare team are aware of these other subtle symptoms. As you know the earlier things are recognized and addressed, the better the outcome.
    Wishing you a speedy recovery, and everyone around you should support you as you need.

    I'm quite upset on your behalf that the fellow competitor would take such reckless action while sharing the arena. I hope you got some kind of accountability or apology from them, at least. Pretzel was not to blame at all. I hope Pretzel and the other mustangs in their new homes continue to thrive. Sending you lots of healing energy. So thankful to see you on here again.

      I’ve had enough concussions. Don’t want any more. Have hit things just as hard with helmet on with far less effect. Wont give up helmet for biking, motorcycling, skating, or skiing - why should horse riding be any different?
      Helmet may not completely protect you but it will reduce severity. In my case it is also a constant reminder to be careful.

    A lot of helmet companies will take helmets that were in falls to study how the foam absorbed impact so they can better their product. I removed the plastic shell of my helmet after my fall that cracked it and was in total disbelief to see how much more damage there was than that small crack. I came out with a herniated disc and severe concussion. I can’t even imagine having injuries like yours. I hope you continue to heal!!!

I have compressed C5C6 and T3T4 from an accident when I was in high school. I feel off a horse at a canter when the left rein broke and we one down a hill. Good for you Lindsay! It's good to hear people promoting wearing a horse riding helmet! Here in New Zealand, we wouldn't dream of riding our horses without one! There are people like Rick Gore "Think like a horse' channel, who actually ridicule people for wearing them & he gives the wrong message, especially to younger people who listen to him a lot!

    • @suzanneyoung8011
      @suzanneyoung8011 9 місяців тому +5

      Agree with you about Rick. Lindsay's testimony here is proof that anything can happen unexpectedly to spook a horse and cause it to bolt, even when a person is sitting still on their horse. Thank God she has more sense than him and was at least wearing her hat helmet.

    • @tfrtrouble
      @tfrtrouble 9 місяців тому +4

      @@suzanneyoung8011 Yeah he has a lot of opinions that make no sense. He is also very against mounting blocks (or similar like standing on a log or rock) because "if you're not fit enough to get on from the ground, you shouldn't be riding"... he says while mounting a small horse as a tall man, i.e. an easy situation where nobody would use a mounting block anyway. Besides, standing on something to mount isn't for your comfort, it's to reduce twisting force on the horse's back.

    • @suzanneyoung8011
      @suzanneyoung8011 9 місяців тому +4

      @@tfrtrouble Exactly! This man has never had to mount a 16 - 17 hand horse wearing an English saddle. He is so full of it, and his followers think he is god when it comes to horses.
      Rick made me so mad last year when he went crazy criticizing the outrider who was leading the Kentucky Derby winner, Rich Strike, who tried to savage his pony. Rick never acknowledges what really happened in a situation but just what he thinks he sees in a video. He was so mean about that particular incident and blamed the outrider for his handling of the horse. He totally missed that Rich Strike had the outrider's horse's rein in his mouth, which is what caused his horse to rear and spin around because he couldn't get away, and the outrider had to hit Rich Strike on the nose to get him to release the rein. Rick was brutally mean to that outrider. I pointed out that Rick totally missed that Rich Strike had ahold of the rein of the man's horse, but he never acknowledged it, and he had hundreds of people on his channel believing he was right.
      If he had bothered to do a little research he could of found out that Rich Strike actually bit the pony girl who was leading him in the post parade, and one of the outriders had to take over from her and lead the horse to the gate before the race. And then the outrider who was trying to lead him to the winner's circle actually was bitten badly three times by the horse, but it wasn't all shown on camera. The trainer went on the national news the next morning and said that the outrider was bitten badly, and he thanked the man for his handling of Rich Strike and said he was sorry for his injuries.
      Sorry for the long post, but I think that particular situation was one of the biggest incidents that Rick got totally wrong in his assessment of it.

      I am a retired flight nurse and have seen it all. I worked in a state where the laws regarding motorcycle riding didn’t require a helmet ⛑️. You can imagine the impact that had on who survived or didn’t. As a horse enthusiast, here again people have feelings both ways regarding helmets. I follow Rick and many other people. As a thinking individual, you have to learn to glean what’s important from each individual. Rick has a lot of good information. Equally, he has poor advice. I could say this about almost every person on UA-cam. Common sense should rule what information you use or discard. I have seen too many people who don’t think for themselves- that’s what gets them into trouble. I dare to say that each person is completely individual and a single person’s advice is not going to be a perfect fit. Look at many expert rider/trainers and learn both what is good and what is bad. Helmets have saved more lives than not. Regardless of the sport, be safe, wear safety gear. Y’all be safe and have a blessed day.

    A helmet doesn't stop someone from having a concussion or head injury. When your head hits something, even while wearing a helmet, your brain still hits against your skull. A helmet is good to keep your skull intact.

    I had a bad fall where my horse spooked, spun around and galloped away while we were just warming up so I had my reins all the way down at the buckle, not prepared at all! I fell hard on my back and cracked my helmet completely at the back. However, it was an IRH helmet and I even though it was a rough fall at a high speed, I got up with no more than soreness. Went to the ER just in case and had no concussion. I was very, very lucky, but I'm also an IRH helmet fan FOR LIFE. I'm really glad you're okay and of course Pretzel isn't to blame. This hits home for me, I was in a serious accident 2 years ago. My helmet was actually cracked open from my fall. I know if I wasn't wearing my helmet, I would be dead. I have added an eventing vest to my gear now (I just trail ride) since I broke my ribs and punctured my lungs in my accident as well. 2 years later and I still have effect from the brain damage. I kept my helmet and break down into tears whenever I see it. Its a scary feeling knowing if you made a different decision, I could be dead.

    As a young adult, I was learning to train green jumpers with an Olympic silver medalist who was my coach who had his own barn and stock. I was the rider, he gave instruction. One mare was getting frustrated with one jump, as was I, so I stopped and said this was going nowhere that day. I put my reins down and took my boots out of the stirrups, just sitting and relaxing before dismounting. The coach came up, yelling at me as his philosophy was, Never stop before the horse does what you want. But, I could feel the tension and knew if I went further, she would act out. Coach then hit the mare hard on her rump! The mare reared and then bucked. I handled the rearing fine, but the buck sent me over her head! I slid across the sand, hitting my head on a post! The helmet cracked and I got a concussion!! I never rode for him again!!!!

    I had a hard fall from a mustang that I started in the beginning of the year. Luckily on my shoulder- 2 months in lots of pain.
    I analyzed my accident repeatedly. What signs did I miss, how could I have prevented it and yes, my saddle slipped too.
    And then I had to learn and think POSITIVE again. So that I ride like I never had an accident.
    And then I adopted a mustang and I am starting her now.
    Happy riding and good recovery- take your time ❤

But I still ride with the RDA..The surgeon said if I had a body protection on it wouldn't of stop my brake as the fracture was very high up, and the body protection wouldn't of protected that part of my neck and spine, the accident was classed as a hit and run as it was a farmer on a bridle way that thought he was being clever chasing us along the lane. I have broken my neck twice from riding horses when I was younger (I always wear a helmet and it could have been a lot worse without one). I always knew it was my fault and doctors always told me to stop riding because I was already born with spinal issues and other disabilities. I can no longer ride and I also lost my amazing horse to cancer just before my own cancer diagnosis but I have carers who own horses so I am always surrounding myself with them. I find it so irresponsable for the other rider to have hit their horse, to do a rearing trick, in the presnce of other green horses. How stupid were they? I'm so glad you were wearing a helmet of some kind, I've had a very similiar experience while wearing a helmet, my green horse bolted, I came off in the bush. I do not remember the accident or why she bolted. I had no witnesses either. I dont remember ICU or cat scans or any of that. I was also complaining of pain and constatnly repeating myself because of loss of short term memory. I started remebering after I was transfered to the ward. I probably would have died if not for the helmet! so I am very BIG on pushing helmets, even for the western riders who like to wear those soft felt hats. I also get blurred vision especially when looking at my phone. I had two broken ribs, and a broken shoulder bone that had to be pinned as well as the closed head injury and bleeding into the brain. I've developed trauma induced dyslexia, so I get words and letters backwards, and if some place or name starts with the same letter, I will get them mixed up. I also hate too much business around me just like you discribed. I get overwhelmed, if I have to learn some thing new it's very hard, especially when it comes to numbers! I developed trauma induced bursitus in my right hip. It was a long time before I rode a horse again and thought I would NEVER ride again. A huge part of my life was just gone! For a while I just stuck with Miniatures til my daughter got me up on her horse and led me forward... taht's where the journey back started for me. Thank you for sharing your story. I have a video on my channel that shares my story to music. I have not been able to verbally talk about it on a video but you've encouraged me to do that! Thank you for your courage. Don't ever give up your dreams, no matter how hard the fall.

    Wow, what an experience. I’m so glad that you survived and that you are on the road to recovery. It is disappointing that the other trainer was using techniques such as use of a loud whip with her mustang and that they did it close behind you and your horse. I hope that they can learn more gentle techniques and learn to remain aware of their surroundings when and if they use aggressive training techniques in the future or if they are training for a trick such as a rear, which would be disturbing for most horses.
    I keep sending Pretzel Love as it can be easy to blame the horse in such situations, she is truly a good horse, and well started with HH starting principles.
    Thank you so much for sharing what happened because it was so unbelievable to me that such an accident could have occurred with your sound training practices. Sending you Heart Coherence and prayers of healing and love. Thank you again Lindsey, to me you are a super star of the horse world.

    Thank you for sharing & I hope you recover totally. We all know that with horses, there is always the element of surprise & accident, but we still love them. I agree totally with your "accident recap", and feel the same, that the "whip activity" should not have been occurring in the arena or anywhere near the other horses, mustangs. We need not forget.... they are still "mustangs", and they cue off each other, differently than our home grown horses. Wishing you speedy recovery.

    Wow. You did everything right. It was so unfortunate (and in my opinion wrong) that the person behind you hit their horse HIT their horse to make it rear. This is NOT necessary at all! I'm sorry this happened to you and Pretzel because of this one person's actions. I too have suffered a bad brain injury. I was in a coma for 3 weeks and had 2 months intensive rehab. I can totally relate to everything your talking about post injury. I can now also walk and talk but have alot of difficulties with the things you talked about. I haven't been able to have a horse since but still hold hope that one day I can. This happened to me when I was 58. I'm now 60 and still miss having a horse. I'm also a nurse however retired. Good luck luv. You're good at what you do xx ❤

    My friend was riding a fairly broke horse when the horse tripped with her. The horse fell with her and my friend hit her head, unfortunately she was not wearing a helmet. She was airlifted to a trauma center where she was only given a 10% chance of survival. She did survive but she has been left with permanent brain damage. She can take care of herself but she’s been left with some problems. She was very lucky and you were so lucky yourself. Praise God you’re ok. My friend is easily overwhelmed as well. Take your time in your recovery. Try not to put a ton of pressure on yourself. Take a day at at a time. Brain injuries take a long time to heal, as a nurse, I’m sure you know that. God bless you, I’m praying for a full recovery for you.

    I’m quite impressed with how well you did on this video. In 2015 I was riding when I fainted from the FL heat and blacked out for a quick second. I ended up falling off my horse at the walk and suffered a concussion and bleeding on the brain. I was in the ICU for two days. The biggest thing that helped me was rest. Lying down in a quiet room for as long as I needed to. If I got tired during the day I made myself stop and lie down. I could only talk to someone for 5-6 minutes before pressure started building inside my head and I had to lie down. Please listen to your body and don’t push yourself. When I pushed myself it would set me back four days where I could barely move. We are all different and react differently to trauma. Your body will tell you what you can and can’t do. I’ll be eager to see your next video and those to come to see how you are doing. ❤

    For the love of horses, we willingly put ourselves in danger as always our horse is our life. It's never guilty of accidents. Life happens. You can get hit by a car, or get cancer. Blaming the horse shows ignorance.

    I am so thankful that you came through this. And it needs to be said about the helmet! You are right.... being a nurse makes you realize even more how important they are and how fragile the body is! When my son was little and complained about his helmet....i would say "Sorry kiddo, but your mama is a nurse and she knows what a
    head injury looks like!" My favorite answer when asked "Why do you ride with a helmet?", is "Because I want to keep my brains in my head.". I will keep you in my prayers. Thank you for showing this. It may save someone's life.

    This is a great reminder that helmets add protection but cannot prevent injury. I'm a former horse person and an avid cyclist, and I was recently reading something similar about bicycle helmets. They help, but we all benefit from the reminder not to bet complacent about them. It's like people who have gotten complacent or have forgotten just how small airborne viruses are. I'd hate for the immunocompromised to mistakenly believe their ill-fitting N-95 will keep them from getting sick in crowded public places, and I'd hate for any horse owner to take unnecessary risks in the belief their helmet will protect them from a head injury in a fall. As for the other handler, it's such a shame they didn't have better situational awareness. Very sorry you had to be the unintended victim of that kind of behavior. Your message is very instructive (as usual) and valuable!

    First time I've actually seen you or your channel and so glad you're ok. I'm a little confused as to why anyone would even want to teach any horse to rear or of course some kind of trick horse for the movies. This is so wrong that they'd be allowed to do this while someone else was doing their test in the arena close by. Especially actually whipping the horse. This is horrible to listen to. I'm so sorry you went through this and hope you make a total recovery. Thank goodness you had a helmet on. Love from Australia.

    I have great empathy for you. On July 29th during a trail ride my mare suddenly started spinning. On the 4th revolution I came off. The result was a fractured L1 vertebrae. Thank the lord I always were a helmet because I am on blood thinners. I too had a full body CT scan. I was very lucky that my vertebrae did not impinge on my spinal cord when it fractured. My accident was not as severe as yours but will have some long term effects on my back. I have purchased an air vest for better protection when I am medically cleared to ride again. The really frustrating thing is that we have no explanation as to why she started spinning. There were no ground wasps and she had been ridden past that particular area several times in the past. The horse directly behind me didn’t have a reaction so we have pretty much ruled out any wild predator that could have caused her to be scared.

    I had a head injury in 2006, I slipped and fell on a wet polished concrete floor. I still today have a lot of the same issues you do. I get headaches very quickly and occasionally migraines if I have too much eye strain or strong odors. I can’t handle repetitive noise or like a lawnmower or especially a blower. If I stand too quickly I get severe vertigo and I’m very prone to falling. I also suffer from nausea and vomiting if I get overly tired.
    In 2014 a neighbors horse jumped into my yard and was attacking my dogs. I put my dogs in their kennels and I caught her and was going to lead her home when she reared and struck out knocking me out.. she was stomping me and thank goodness my shepherd climbed out of his kennel and ran her off of me and protected me from being killed. When I came too I knew I was severely injured, I just didn’t know HOW severely. I was having trouble breathing and thought she had broken a rib and punctured my lung.. in fact she had severed my Splenic artery and severely lacerated my liver. They also tried to airlift me (we were about 100 miles from Grady Trauma Center in Atlanta) but it was a busy day apparently and there was no helicopter available. I coded on the way and my paramedic made the call to stop to pick up two additional paramedics. Thankfully they kept me alive until they got me to the hospital where I was quickly taken in for emergency surgery. I’m so fortunate to be alive. Both accidents ended with weeks in ICU and life long issues, but again I’m alive. Thank you for posting your story and encouraging others to ALWAYS wear a helmet. If I had taken a second to put my helmet on before going out to handle an unknown clearly upset horse, I perhaps wouldn’t have been injured at all but certainly not likely as severely!!
