I saw them both quite a few times in New York. Down-to-earth women with legendary voices. My fondest memories are of Frederica as the perfect Cherubino, and Kiri as the perfect Marschallin.
Dame Kiri was the perfect Contess Almaviva Dona Elvira Fiordiligli Arabella Marchalin Desdemona and Flika was the ideal Cherubino Cenerentola Rosina Octavian Dorabella etc. Both are long time friends since 1971.. They only sang and recorded operetas and musicals very well.
@@dianaaljadeff2983 the perfect everyone! I am not an opera fan but I love these two. I saw them in concert together in Boston, DC, and Columbus Georgia. They are a lot of fun
Dame Kiri - my compatriot and our greatest export. Her support of young singers has been incredible. And Frederica... her Melisande is my favourite opera recording of all time.
Thank you for this. Both so gracious. Lovely how Dame Kiri always makes reference to Joan Sutherland whenever she is interviewed about Cardiff Singer of the World.
These two ladies were the reason I fell in love with opera. I was flipping channels and I got to PBS and I heard this sublime voice singing "Porgi Amore" from Figaro and I was captured with beauty. That beauty was Kiri Te Kanawa (fabulous name for an opera singer and so was Frederica von Stade, whom I first thought was German!). Then Miss Von Stade later on in the afternoon performance sang "The Presentation of the Silver Rose" by R. Strauss with Judith Blegin. Strauss said that he wanted a Morzartian like opera and he beautifully succeeded. In the evening, Miss von Stade sung the Final Trio" because the great Tatiana Troyanas was sick. We lost three great female singers in 1993 much too soon - Miss Troyanas, Miss Pool and Miss Augur. Miss von Stade often sang with Miss Popp.
Glad for the "like!" Actually my situation was never to find an agent who could just fix it and let me get on with the artistic side as I am middle generation who knows my repertoire, has good experience but needs the solid opera house work to bring it all together. Lovely to have made this tiny contact and enjoyed so many of your performances.
Dear Dame Kiri - I was in a public library and some PC's have sound and some not unfortunately. I will have to give it another try. Enjoyed Cardiff singer, what I could hear of it!
Kiri is always talking of the young people today. I can't watch the Voice, The X factor or any of the talent shows because the singers scream, the judges all love them when they open their mouths & yell & it just sounds horrible. She's right in what she says they'll ruin their voices. And I'm sure they don't go on for many years. I don't expect them to all be opera singers but I just hate how they scream today - not singing at all.
Yes, well...you will not find beauty - least of all beautiful singing - from the opera houses today. So, keep the political theatre and nudist camps, I`m staying on youtube. How beautifully singers used to sing.
Kiri te kanawa: "Did you ever have anyone do this sort of thing like meto to you?" Frederica von stade: "um no. But sometimes I'm a little insulted." 😂
Well, the Catholic nuns, apparently, talked about fear of God, but there is the love of God as well. For both reasons, however, it should be noted that "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain." (Exodus 20:7)
Two great divas in every sense of the word but yet two Down to earth ladies that lit up the stages of the worlds great opera houses.

Too bad the kindness did not go both ways
I got to see them both in recital together in 2006. They were amazing.
You both sing so beautiful 👏👏👏

They are beautiful in pairs with their voice.
Thank you so very much
Nothing against Dame Kiri but FVS continues to exude charm.
Great interview. Can't help but feel that Kiri is slightly cynicle, negative whilst Frederica exudes warmth and sincerity. Very entertaining.
I think Kiri is v warm as well. And both have a great sense of humour!
My beloved Von Stade...
Wow! Just saw this!
Thank you for this fascinating and thoughtful interview! I shall have to be careful as a fish in the zodiac!

Obviously managed to get the sound through in the end!
hi mark vey god
Sad to say no sound here.
Anne Aldridge none at all? The audio quality of the original video online was poor. But it should at least be audible.

Very audible and very interesting thank you both!

it must have been an outrage.
One of those crashing bores who says all good singers are in the past.....bla bla bla.
