The first rule about radio club is you don’t talk about radio club…the second rule about radio club……..😂 love the references! And glad to see older gear on the air! 73!
Thanks Rob for checking this stuff out!! Glad to hear all is well. Oh, and the cracked screen on the tuner..... it was already there when i got it, you didnt do that.
I just keep watching and I see the double coaxial knobs up right for high and low cut control look mispositioned. Have a look there. Inner knob (high cut) fully clockwise, outer knob (lowcut) fully counter clokwise. This should be the default setting before any filtering. D.
From the manual of the 969: The meter on/off button must be turned on for the meter to function... Also, later on they state you must have power to use the peak circuitry. (I found this out the hard way with an MFJ 815D meter)
Interesting...I didn't know these required power to function correctly. Just for fun, I just tried it powered to see what would happen but the needles still don't move. I thought they were missing but they are jammed way down low and probably stuck. I could probably take the meter apart and free them up
TS-440 owner here. Not pristine but not terribly bad either. I had a lot of fun with it, then it sat for 27 years. It’s working great after a bench tune up but if it craps out, I’ll go buy a QMX from Hans (may do that anyway). I’ll sure as hell won’t pay $4,000 - $5,000 for a new rig. With the right antenna, I’ll go just as far as a new one.
I have just got one of these radios its a TS-570d , but unlike yours it seems to only be able to transmit up to 30mhz instead of 50mhz like yours there. Just getting to grips with it , so far I love it .thanks for the video🙂
I know it's an older video but the audio issue on ssb looks like it might be because you have the high and low cut dsp in the center which I believe is cutting out alot of the recieve passband. Turn the high cut full cw and the low cut full ccw
I think the "S" has six meters and the "d" does not. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/www.radiomanual.info/schemi/KENW_HF/TS-570DG_SG_broch.pdf
Hi Rob, another thought other than others you already had on the 570. Perhaps there’s an optional filter installed inside which is wrong? I’d take a peek inside as well as do a master reset as you did and have a look at the manual. Very wired, it is definitely not normal behavior. Let us know! Im so curious now… 73, Diego
I think there is something going on with that jumper in back. The 570 has one optional filter slot available. You have to choose a CW or SSB filter, Not both. The filter width on SSb should adjust to 2400hz. And yes the 570 is a little narrow for the eSSB guys. The 2400hz is also the widest transmit BW. some SSB guys are at 3000hz or wider. I have the 570d. Mine does not have 6 meters.
I have a 945E and it works great. There's nothing wrong with 90's gear either and Ham Radio is about the fun of the hobby. You don't need to be an expert to play Ham Radio. I've seen "professionals"...and I'll use that term loosely, who can't even make VHF analog repeaters work effectively in public safety.
Hey Rob, in your mind do you have an idea at what point you might consider yourself an expert? A certain amount of years or a certain amount of equipment testing where you could say to yourself yes at this point I can say I'm an expert?
I consider myself a "jack of all trades"...I know a little bit about a lot of stuff but don't have a mastery of anything really. Except maybe circuit board design and manufacturing...I've been dealing with that every day for over 30 years...
This video just proves again that before you use, or even evaluate, any piece of equipment read and work through the @#%& manual! You don't have to be an expert or technician to do that......
Thank you Mark for letting Rob check out your radio so we could see what a 90s radio looked and sounded like. Get on the air and enjoy your radio.
Glad you could check out your friend's radio,
Dude I love the movie references in your test transmissions :)
Thanks Marc!

Looks like some great gear to get on the air and get after it !
Most tuners that have a peak/average display function require 12v external power for the meter to work properly, at least in the peak position.
Thanks Rob for checking this stuff out!! Glad to hear all is well. Oh, and the cracked screen on the tuner..... it was already there when i got it, you didnt do that.
Thanks Marc - I'm glad I didn't break that! Looks like your stuff is working fairly well...let's get an antenna up and get you on the air
Great video, look forward to the next radio tests.

I think you did a very good job. I have a Kenwood 570 but I’m 87 years old and I don’t do very well programs and stuff. I love the radio.
Thank you!
Thanks Mark ! 😃
Thanks for this review, it is perfect timing for me because I am waiting the arrival of a used TS-570S I just bought on ebay!

I don't have the radio here anymore but I'll pass this on to Marc
Good eye.
Even though the Kenwood is in ruff cosmetic state… it’s still better than most modern radios
Hello from Paul N8NUG LOL Great work!
Good call sign!
Very interesting and helpful video, Thank You
Ground is hardwired to the remote terminal. Odd.
Maybe that is why you have to activate fsk to hear wide-band? Just a thought.
Excellent video
Hi Thks for your video what the difference between Ts570D and Ts570S

I had the same thoughts but haven't opened the radio as it is not mine. I will leave it up to the owner to check this

That scratched up plastic, get some fine around #2000 sandpaper to polish out that scratch.

It isn't about the stuff. It's about knowing what to do with the stuff.
Actually, this video WAS about the stuff and seeing if it worked.
you have the dsp slope set wrong
Im not surprised

Please stop tapping the plastic and glass with screwdriver... Even though it is old and beat up, we reaspect the tools we use.
