  • www.gobeyondthe... - The unrivaled beauty of the campus: Ask anyone who’s had the privilege of attending or exploring Ohio University‘s scenic Athens campus in autumn when classes resume, and just wait for the smile to creep across their face. As a prospective student on a routine college tour, I was led across the tree-lined central green that’s often filled with jugglers, lounging scholars, and organizations that always have room for another member.

July 2022-----I guess I was lucky during the years 1972 to 1976 when I attended OU, it hardly snowed much. I too fell in love the natural beauty surrounding the entire campus, because of the surrounding landscape of hills and valleys, you knew you were nestled in a emerald green eden. The town and campus was walkable, and back then it was still quite quaint. It feels like those were ancient times,.....we still used public pay phones to communicate, computers were just being invented and were the size of railroad cars, and relied on manilla punch cards to carry out the simplest tasks. Color TVs were only in the student lounges, it was an early version cable network, reception was often hindered by the surrounding rolling hills. Our dorm rooms were stereo music listening rooms, where walls of end table sized speakers blasted eardrum shattering tunes. Yeah, we partied! Dorms threw Keg parties every Friday in their respective greens. Ha! Mostly that low beer called 3.2,.....low alcohol content, but other things were available and even sometimes there were "spiked' punches. Recreational drug use was common, too. Everything you can think of, from weed to LSD. I learned to drink alcohol, which ones and in what order, in quantities both small and large. The goal was to get loaded and not vomit. You win some and you lose some. We were always safe, we never had the need to drive anywhere, after we indulged. We stumbled around until we zonked out in our dorm rooms, or crashed on the carpeted floors of the student lounge. Train tracks still criss-crossed the campus streets, it was fairly common to have to wait for one to slowly make its way to its destination. I indulged in many hijinks and shenanigans,....yet I was able to graduate with honors. I earned my BFA in Fine Art, printmaking. I got to try my hand at making art in many disciplines. Jewelry making, hand building in clay, woodworking, & foundry casting. My art professors recognized my talents, and directed me to apply for an arts scholarship. Three years running, I submitted portfolios of my art, and was awarded them. The money paid for all my classes, & some supplies. I was recognized for my leadership and woodworking skills, and was awarded a part time, paid position, in the wood shop for the painting department. I prepared the wood framed canvas stretchers, for both the undergrads and graduate school, students.

So, an icy, cold winter, is the only bad thing you experienced? I am confused. Are you endorsing OU or telling everyone to stay away because you didn’t pack winter boots?

As an Ohioan, the winters aren't always that bad. Sometimes we have a green Christmas in the 40's. Sometimes it's -10 degrees and you're trying to not slip on black ice. Ohio's weather is very inconsistent, but don't let it deter you

It's not bad. One of my friends lived in Wilson and she said that the only thing that would happen is that the door would shut on its own. Most of the ghost stories are bs.

OU is the third most haunted university in the world and athens is something like the thirteenth most haunted town or something like that. a lot of people will say if you connect all the graveyards they'll form a pentagon but as an athens local from an early age i can deny this.

I grew up in Athens always going downtown and there was a legend that one of the rooms in one of the old dorms was haunted. They say whoever stays in that room would go batshit insane and people say that has happened multiple times. It’s so bad to the point where OU has closed that room down using bricks

January 2023. I’ve been at OU for a month, already planning to transfer out. I must be socially inept or something because I haven’t made a single friend here. The bars are severely overrated, and Athens is a crumbling poverty stricken little town. I need to get out of here

This school, like most others, is a joke. It’s a holding facility for giant toddlers. Why would someone go to college who can’t yet even prepare for life enough to see Winter coming? There are plenty of jobs at Goodwill for people like this. Unbelievable.
