You don't have to go through all of that Hassel to hand pollinate. Just need a newspaper to catch the pollen and blow the pollen onto the silks, using pollen from different plants as you go.
On a research nursery it's done this way to prevent contamination. You want specific pollen to specific plants. That's why the bags. Only way to get 100 percent purity
Thx. I grew a small crop last year.. I had so so many that didn’t develop but didn’t know what was going on. I hope I’m not too late. I just noticed it’s tassel.
Man...I have heirloom corn and as you point out, they pollinate so easily. I've just grown one variety at a time and that prevents cross pollination where I live.
Thank you, great demonstration, I have watched a few different videos and you have added to what they covered, thanks for the additional information. I am only growing 100 to 300 of each variety, do I have to save so many cobs for seed? What is the minimum to maintain diversity? I am just saving the seed for myself.
Very well done and informative video! We'll have to try all this next year! I have a couple of questions: - when do you start trimming the shoots back? - do I understand correctly that the silks can be pollinated pretty much as soon as they come out? - and for how many days can they be pollinated if I don't get to them right away? Thanks much, I look forward to next year's corn now!!!
You dont want to sweep your tassles like that. So like when she says "and sometiems you break them and thats ok" no, you dont want to break them off and shouldnt tell ppl that info if theyre serious about growing corn. The anthers produce pollen for up to over a week, and if you are damaging them or breaking the stalk, you're going to stop the process. You could easily tap them over a bag gently and leave the corn as it is after that, you can gather pollen for days and sprinkle it over silks. So after she's done, that corn is all slouching and bent over. That's not good lol the ears aren't even pollinated and youre leaving a stalk injured. Just because you've gathered pollen and are self pollinated doesn't mean the stalk doesn't need to be left untouched and healthy. That damage can hinder the way the corn grows because the energy is going to that injury. Plants try to heal themselves. You could gently tap that pollen, sprinkle over the silks and then gently gently move the silks every day to rearrange any that pollen hasn't touched. Sry but this isn't a good example.
Jeez, I have two varieties right next to each other, they have tassels and silk I hope I get some crazy Frankenstein ears , live learn and eat. Thanks for the lesson I will apply on the next crop.
This video is very entertaining. I cringed and laughed out loud several times 9:45. Other times, I just laughed 10:54. If the corn stalk is looking really straggly and ugly, make sure to double bag it. Might as well take it 1 step further and use a Seasoning or Salt Shaker 14:55 Thanks again. Please continue to make these funny videos.
My guess would be yes .. I started inspecting my silks when they are green. If you catch corn ear worms early, they never get inside the corn. For a little while(days?) They feed on the outside silk. Just pull them off and kill them before they ruin your ear of corn. I've never found an egg and they seem to lay eggs on fresh green silks. Once the silks begin browning the moths don't seem to like them anymore. So you only have to be vigilant for a short time.
If you are doing this at home could you wash the pollen into a cup then put that in a spray bottle to spray on the silks? would the pollen pass through largely unharmed?
Why don't you let the honey bees pollinate it because they will pollinate the corn I grow corn to and everytime I grow up to be pollinated and I have a good crop. I don't know why people want to do that for it's just a lot of time consuming good luck with it brother have a blessed day
@@jhanks2012 but if the bees in the area is still going to get pollen dated although he he may be doing it that way but it still going to get pollen dated from other corn also you have a blessed day and be safe and take care of yourself
Bees don't pollinate corn at all!! If you see bees around the tassels they are harvesting pollen. They can't pollinate corn cause they don't fly to the silks.

Did you miss the part where they said they wanted know chance of cross pollination

Thanks for sharing your technique. I’m going to try it today. Just growing 6 corn in a grow bag. First time growing.
Wow that's a lot of work for 200-300 ears of corn!!!! It's more an act of love.
At this point each corn will have to be sold for > $5 each 😂 otherwise you lose money.
Man...I have heirloom corn and as you point out, they pollinate so easily. I've just grown one variety at a time and that prevents cross pollination where I live.
my lord that looks like so much work
Great program and learned so much!!!
Keep up the great work!
Appreciate the demonstration!
Great video. Great explanation

I used organic rock phosphate and potash this year and my corn is 10 feet tall. omg
YES PHIL KAUTH AND SHELJA THAKUR ( PROBABLY FROM INDIA )
BOTH OF YOU DESERVE THANKS--FROM BANGLADESH ON 19/4/2021
3-1 you mean you pollinated the same silk 3 times???????
Why do some corn don’t pollinate and do you have a F1 you use

i'm still learning too but from what i've gathered you want to pollinate the silks within 10 days of them showing
Very nicely done thanks 22:28
Where do you get your bags from?

Plant Sex!! Great video!!
How long a corn plant continue to produce pollen after tasseling?
Good question I was going to ask
Where can we buy the bags??
Bean hand pollination please☺️

Can the pollen be saved to be crossed for a later growing veritys
Woow best video please! Tray to in amharic
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I would like to know after the hand pollination how many corns comes out on 1plant?
17
1 2 or 3 cobs
Hassan W. - You're not sure if you would like to know that?
@@SeriouslydaveI think that there isn't relation between hand pollination and the cobs count

Unlikely. Do it their way.
Thank you so much
Does the hand pollinated ear develop fully? Do most or all of the kernels develop?
As long as every silk gets pollinated then yes, every kernel will develop. Each silk corresponds to one kernel.
From what ive seen you get fuller results larger kernels, but these guys are harvesting seeds not eating it.
@@Seriouslydave
What is the method of extracting seeds from corn cobs? Do you have a link to a video that explains the method well
I'm guessing the woman is from India.
So?
@@marikabennett9349 So there.
Wasting of time Programme. I wouldn't do this hectic job because my corn still to harvest without hand pollination.
They do this to ensure that the seeds are pure. They sell seeds.

I believe the main reason to go to the trouble of bagging has to do with isolating from other strains in the area
