My mom and dad were there, on their honeymoon. Still have the program and other souvernirs, thanks to a good "friend", I no longer have the ticket stubbs. RIP, mom and dad.
NASCAR ran a separate Convertibles division, and Bill France added them to the race to boost the number of entrants. The convertibles were slower than the sedans, and the highest placed convertible was Joe Lee Johnson's '57 Chevrolet, which finished 16th - also being blasted in the face by the wind and breeze wouldn't have been much fun!
love the convertibles with no roll cage and the simple guard rails.1 year before drafting was discovered. this was when men where men and sheep were scared.
Ronald Zannini Ronald convertable!! I can’t believe that! & for God sakes up that banking & launched to high heaven! Ronald they had big balls but a ton of them would soon start paying the price.
I loved the '59 Chevys... This was the first year NASCAR really started pushing these engines and drivetrains to the limit... The automakers must've gotten a whole lot of info on overall durability from this and future Daytona 500s...
So was I, in the band. That was not our band depicted, I don't think. We were a nearby military school, Florida Military School in Deland, Florida. We are having a reunion in Daytona this summer. We have a website, and mu cousin Tommy is president of the FMS assoc. I hope yo be there.
@@skipperrussell2025 I can't drive, I was born in 85, my first nascar race I saw on tv was when bobby labonte flipped over at talladega in 01, I knew nothing of the Earnhardts, I knew nothing of the history etc, I was bored as heck and came upon Nascar 30 seconds before the crash been watching ever since! Big difference between then and now too!
Two fried eggs, flavourful tea, bacon, sausages, mushroom, tomatoes and buttered bread with early days of Daytona videos is Very Very good for health and perfect recipe for a good day start!! Just perfect breakfast!
Winner of the race was Lee Petty, margin of victory was 1 yard. All it took was 3 days for NASCAR to decide the winner of the 500 between Petty and unofficial winner Johnny Beauchamp thanks to the famous photo finish. Petty said "I know I won". This 500 was one of the few with no cautions.
Sad you can see the beginning of NASCAR's decline in the "Official Fuel of the Daytona 500" plugs. If only they knew how it would turn out...then again, might not have changed anything. They just want their millions, who cares how they get it?
Well, no concept of exactly what they're risking yet. Seatbelts became a thing AFTER this also. A lot of people died, to make our cars safer today. I feel uncomfortable driving faster than 30mph without my seatbelt, and these guys are flat out xD Balls of steel, as everyone there knows they put their life on the line.
incredible that 3 car from the back to the front it suck at the end he had a good car to win it all dam. Oh yeah theres something about that number on the door
Before Petty's hat days. lol Talked to him a few times while he was on locationed doing ads, he just as one of the boys, my girls jaw was dropped the whole time during talking about his cherry red rear wheel brakes while running. lol
---- I wonder why it took them so long to focus on aerodynamics, and drafting. I'm a bicycle rider, a fast one, and you can see right away the effect of wind resistance - that it's exponential, I wonder how long it took them to figure out that it was exponential?
Yes you're right, see Johnny b and tiny lund actually we're from my area back in the day that's how I know so much about both of them but I know tiny and nothing to do with this race
They have had on board cameras and cameras on cars since the 50s and 60s. The difference is that they were very clunky and weighed down the car. As such usually only backmarkers would take a Lil extra pay from the tv producers to run a car with cameras. The BIG difference from this and the 80s was LIVE in car cameras. That's what made the difference. Is when we could see the action live as it was happening

Hey guys if you go to Richard petty racing experience and drive a rental car guess what these cars are faster then the ones you get to drive cause you only get to 115 mph at Charlotte and Atlanta and I'm a driving instructor for them and the ride along car you get up to 176 mph top speed going off into each turn and people get scared to death I rode in a passenger seat with other instructor and it's very weird feeling so I can see why so remember all that money you will spend is a lie about the speed and the photos you can buy in a frame of the car you drove on the track going across start finish line we take those pictures before people arrive to drive we put window net on and a helmet that they give you so you can't tell difference and we park on start finish line they take pic and use same pic for everyone.
"Lee Petty comes into the pits and young Dick Petty" ..... I'm like Dick Petty? and then I realized it was Richard Petty I just don't remember him ever being called Dick .... I guess that's understandable since when this race took place I still had 6 weeks to go in my Mama's belly
Shame that this is now the second closest Daytona 500 finish. In 2016, Denny Hamlin beat Martin Truex, Jr. by 0.010 seconds, making it the closest finish in Daytona 500 history.
My mom and dad were there, on their honeymoon. Still have the program and other souvernirs, thanks to a good "friend", I no longer have the ticket stubbs. RIP, mom and dad.
I love this area of racing. When a garage could run a car and not need millions to be competitiive, just ingenuitiy
They had no idea that the Plymouth Superbird would do 200 mph in about 10 years.
@silverbird58 It was a good place for a boy to grow up, watch all this evolve before his eyes. Amazing to see...
Unbelievable that some of these guys were running convertibles.
NASCAR ran a separate Convertibles division, and Bill France added them to the race to boost the number of entrants. This was back when a stock car really was a "STOCK" car! Interior door panels and trim; even glass windows!
Never again will there be cars built of such style..
Lol the difference between Impala then and now
brian critchley Most beautiful cars ever build
Back then you could tell an Oldsmobile from a Chevy from 6 blocks down the street.
Cars were beautiful and had personality back then. Modern cars look like bugs!

the sound is divine!
Great footage! Thanks for posting!!
This was the true win on Sunday sell on monday era

Kevin Meno but Johnny really won tho
And 2 years later the same drivers went flying out of Daytona ending their racing careers
The very first Daytona 500 race, EVER!
The First Daytona 500 Race!🏁👍
You can say that again! Amazing!
Ole Fireball Roberts Sure knew how to wheel a car!! Terrible tragedy what happened to him
we couldnt see them live on TV, had to wait weeks to see these films on air usually on Sundays Sports, 1st filmed shots from a Blimp cam later
sooo cool the first Daytona 500
3:44 Boogity Boogity Boogity Let's Go Racing 🏁!!
I'm here wondering if the 59 Chevys were experiencing lift above 100 mph due to the large horizontal fins....I read somewhere that that was a problem.
Sad you can see the beginning of NASCAR's decline in the "Official Fuel of the Daytona 500" plugs. If only they knew how it would turn out...then again, might not have changed anything. They just want their millions, who cares how they get it?
That's what a STOCK CAR needs to be....that still have trim and real chrome an look at pit stops how things change.....neat video
"Dick Petty signals his father" hahaha.... oh how things changed 20yrs later when "Dick" was crowned king.
masterpd85 ,,,,,,, (DICK ) ? I know Dick is nother name for Richard, but no body ever called him Dick, ,lol you're the the ""DICK ""
Yeah, that kinda caught me. Richard being called Dick, but back then he was a "kid" in the sport. Now the King.
Actually 8 years. 1967 Richard won 27 races, 10 in a row...and the media labeled him “King Richard”.
Maybe the series has been re-released in DVD under Nascar like their UA-cam video of 1959 Daytona Highlights.
Some of the races I have found out have...but very few...
Richard Petty started 6th and Finished 57th and was out after 8 Laps due to Engine Problems.
Speeding kills yes, however, thanks to these guys, I saved 20 minutes on my commute, busting out 120. xD
Lee Petty became the patriarch of a multi-generation NASCAR driver dynasty.
Considering the poor aerodynamics of these cars, it's amazing they could run at 150 mph. I'm sure they were doing that on the straights.
All these guys had huge guts to be able to this without modern safety equipment
Well, no concept of exactly what they're risking yet. Seatbelts became a thing AFTER this also. A lot of people died, to make our cars safer today. I feel uncomfortable driving faster than 30mph without my seatbelt, and these guys are flat out xD Balls of steel, as everyone there knows they put their life on the line.
incredible that 3 car from the back to the front it suck at the end he had a good car to win it all dam. Oh yeah theres something about that number on the door
But that car proves it takes everything going right to win, including the fuel pump lasting 500 miles......and it didn't.
Nice video
Before Petty's hat days. lol Talked to him a few times while he was on locationed doing ads, he just as one of the boys, my girls jaw was dropped the whole time during talking about his cherry red rear wheel brakes while running. lol
It has changed a lot
nice video is new race inaugural for daytona 500 or not
yes

It's exponential my dear Watson
the drivers were made of tough stuff.
Good thing they had those tailfins,so cool.Cars today are so boreing
The 'King' pulling pit crew duties, lol
Be great to see a stock car race again, think about it.
Lee Petty's 38th Career NASCAR Grand National series Victory
But Johnny b actually won it
@@peterbilt9996 kinda funny cuz next year they would crash together
Yes you're right, see Johnny b and tiny lund actually we're from my area back in the day that's how I know so much about both of them but I know tiny and nothing to do with this race
I wish I was alive when mascara went 140😂😂😂😂
Trying to figure out what kind of jets those are...I'm thinking Grumman F11 Tigers.
@70 Series Tires The US Navy Blue Angels flew F-11 tigers around this time period. Those are definitely the Blue Angels / F-11's.
holy fuck that's dangerous LOL
If the NASCAR car bodies were like this and they have safety NASCAR MAYBE popular today
Señor Oof I love your name
So they are
What was the song playing at 14:41?
The first 39 seconds of this video, is this real or? I was born in 85, when did they start with on board cameras? I started watching racing end of 01
They have had on board cameras and cameras on cars since the 50s and 60s. The difference is that they were very clunky and weighed down the car. As such usually only backmarkers would take a Lil extra pay from the tv producers to run a car with cameras.

LETS GO RALPH EARNHARDT
Never knew that convertibles ran.
30 out of 59 cars finished this race.
Now in restricted plates nascars go 202mph
Why does the music sound like something bad is about to happen?!
Who's here after the Hamlin win?
me...damn that was a close one

Never again will you see real(ish) cars in NASCAR.
real racing, not billion dollar fancy computer controlled milling parts etc etc etc
