Well, you wouldn't "HAVE to", but GT did a video on how a Pokemon would supposedly use a small black hole via science. In summary: it either defeats the purpose (putting it lightly) or does fuck all.
When they were talking about the hole in the b button my literal first instinct was “it’s probably for blind people kinda like Braille” it took me a minute to realize my mistake. Man I’m stupid
Michael Hand as much as I adore the N64, that controller did not hold up well...it being my first home console kinda softened the blow, but compared to other things, there's no real reason we had to get this weird trident thing that I'm pretty sure only one game had you hold in a decent fashion, that being Kirby 64.
that being said, there is no better feeling than taunting in Smash bros on the N64, the way you lift your right hand and slap the L button as fast as possible before the round ends! Its like hitting the big red button to Launch the Nukes, and trying to time it so the screen pauses at just the right time for the pose as the results come up. Its the best thing about the controller, and probably the only good thing.
I was 7-8 years old when my family got the xbox as a gift when it launched. How I managed to play it with the duke while having child hands I still do not know to this day
I'm actually serious about The Duke. I preferred it over the updated controllers that I eventually bought. I even got a 4-second KO in Def Jam: Fight for NY with one. I know I can't prove it, and you won't believe me, but I had to defend that controller, out of pure love, a lot of the time.
I could also never get used to PS controllers(of any generation) because they are so small and wimpy. It feels like sheltering a butterfly in your hands. I need a big manly slab of plastic that can handle a mauling.
I can honestly kinda vibe; I can't confirm for sure yet, not having used the Duke, but I relate to you feeling that the Dualshocks are too small, and surprisingly and thankfully even the old Xbox S has worked well, despite how big my hands are.
As an audio only listener, thanks for the reupload with visuals, this podcast had me googling weird farm paintings and controllers like a madman. Good on ya Woolsworth.
This is the first time I've wanted an Xbox one -- my nostalgia for the original Duke is too strong. It was my favourite controller even when I had tiny 11-year-old hands and I still use it when I play my Xbox.
holy shit i had a friend that had that and she made me use that controller whenever we played. i remember it having a really really strong plastic smell
Wooly-- The Duke (I've never heard it called this until they announced this remake) -- was always known to me as The Hamburger and it is easily one of my most favorite controllers ever. Tony Hawk 2x/3...I was unstoppable. GunValkyrie...can't even imagine playing that on anything else...it'd be almost impossible. 3do controller -- I'm one of the biggest 3do collectors in several states surrounding me and I've never once gotten a blister from that controller and 3do is my go-to for Sewer Shark and Gex and many others.
There are only 2 ways to improve the 360 controller. 1: Good D-pad. 2: Bring back the black and white buttons (and put them below the other buttons like they had them on the improved original xbox controller) while KEEPING the left and right bumpers (L1 and R1 for you PSPlebes). There's a third option as well which is swap the location of the D-pad and left analog stick, but that's a sidegrade and only deserves existence if the way they had it was also in the picture. Okay, and maybe they can make them in multiple sizes so people of all hand sizes can have their fun, but let's not get too crazy here.
ACKTUALLY, the XBox S Controller was MADE for the Japanese console launch. In fact, Japan had the S Controller BEFORE America, causing many to joke about how Japan always gets the good stuff even when it comes FROM America! Also please remember that if you bought your Jaguar games new like I did, each game came with a unique numpad overlay that tells you what each button does. In retrospect this was a terrible idea because OF COURSE you lose the overlays, but the numpad wasn't confusing at all if you owned it at launch. Also, yeah, Duke is worse than Jaguar pad.
I wish they uploaded or had a video clip for that time on the podcast maybe 2 years ago when they connected every universe from different franchises in media together, I forgot what episode it was but it was on the the greatest SBFC moments ever.
The cool thing with the intelvision controller was that games would come with button inserts you would set over the button pad that would list what the buttons would do in the game. Problem as many people didn't use them, they were lost, or they wore out.
Listening to the podcast, they're about two minutes into this segment, hit refresh on UA-cam. ...Huh, Well I guess I'll just pause and watch it here then. Weird.
For a long time, the only game console my family had was an Intellivision. Something they didn't cover about that is most of the games for that came with overlays you slide over the "phone buttons" that illustrate what each button was supposed to do. And I expect the huge Jaguar controller was supposed to do the same thing, too.
I had an S type controller, and wish they ran with it so hard. When can I have my black and white buttons back? Those were great buttons for video games to use as grenade type/ammo type switchers back in the day!
My university has a bunch of Dukes lying around one of the computer labs for no adequately explained reason. We often take time out our day to mock them and marvel at their great size and unwieldiness.
After a month of being hiatus cause I moved out at 17 i come back to all this content it's fucking lit missed u guys been a fan since I was 12 you guys are amazing much love on some rns
I wish they at least added an RB and LB to the Duke. I remember playing KOTOR 1 and forgeting where or missing the white button several times because the controller is an abomination. Its not even how big the controller was, its how poorly placed the buttons were.
Say what? I think the XBOne controller feels great. Plus, it still hasn't worn out on me; the sticks on the 360 controllers wore out way too fast, I went through like 4 or 5 controllers because of that.
DarkUbiquity you mean I wasn’t the only one who felt like I needed to trim my thumbnails down to nothing before every play session or else I’d have those little grey “shavings” scattered across the face?
DarkUbiquity The Xbox One controller still feels good, don't get me wrong, but the caved in feel of the 360 controller felt so right for me, mostly because of my big hands. I've gone through 2 Xbox One controllers, with problems occuring with the shoulder buttons and the d pad.
lil juicebox I personally love the Xbox One controller, but the 360 controller surpassed it in one key area. The interior of the "handles" of the One controller (where your fingers wrap around) has very sharp seams, and they get very irritating after a while. The grey insert at the bottom of the 360 controller, I think, never had that problem.
I actually LOVE the duke! When me and friends played I ALWAYS go for the duke! I'm for sure going to get this controller, dont really care if people say I have bad taste in controllers, if it fells good in my hands, then im all for it!
The S controller is pretty awesome. The triggers are a little low and it lacks shoulder buttons, but that's what the 360 pad is for, which is my favorite controller. The late model ones are the best
+ExcelExcel Meme? What? The Duke controller is legitimately one of the best controllers ever made? I guess you're fucking tiny? But, I'm 6'6''. Most controllers give me goddamn HAND CRAMPS. It sucks!
I really liked the big controller, it fit my hands better than the smaller one. Then again I came from using a Dreamcast controller before I got an Xbox, so it was more what I was used to. I'm glad they're putting this back out there it's nice to have weird options for controllers.
Glad you put this up. Never owned an original xbox, and when playing at friends house who only had s controllers - so I'd have been so confused listening to the audio-only podcast and not known what you guys were on about with "the Duke". Fukkin black and white buttons at the top REALLY!?! RRREEEEEEEAAAAAALLLYYY!!!!!!?
I liked the duke, even with tiny child hands I felt more comfortable with it. My hands aren't particularly big but the regular PS3 controller is absolutely killer, I can't play anything but RPGs on it or get horrible cramps. I would have much rather have the boomerang or the duke for that matter than the regular PS3 controller.
Thanks babys. I luckly caught the livestream right when you started talking about this. But the other audio listeners that weren't so lucky would've been confused as f.
The Duke I actually find comfortable to hold, its the button layout and the different stick grips that really kill it. Pretty much every 2004/2005 Xbox game feels weird on the Duke, because they were designed for the S's layout.
the intellivision (i think the jaguar too but i didn't have one) had little plastic overlays with graphics for each game that you'd slot into place over the phone pad, usually labeling the buttons. it was still garbage but there was at least some method to the madness. the controllers in turn fit into little slots on the console itself
I always preferred the Duke to the Gamecube controller. Nice heft felt good and I had/have tiny hands. Always wish they used the center bit for more, but now that they are, I'm hype.
Woolie's just sad that he can never fully experience the girth of The Duke with his tiny Asian girl hands.
His hands will never be strong enough for the 3DO's B button
He eats corn the long way
It was too big to be called a controller. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw plastic.
Leroytirebiter *FORCES INTENSIFIES*
Leroytirebiter you win
Send this to Matt.
*_CLANG_*
I don't know what these guys are talking about. The Duke is fine once you get used to being stuck in its orbit.
The pull of its gravity creates a pleasant tingly feeling in the back of the brain
Fucking Enrico Pucci wouldn't want this fucking Gravity.
The Duke is like all those farmers who had their cows painted as squares, so big and meaty it was completely busted.
I lost my shit so hard along with Pat once I was able to see the image. XD
The jaguar controller looks about as wieldable as a black hole.
Its actually not as bad as you think. If I was going to compare it to a modern controller. Its like a 360 controller with the chat pad.
Luis Santiago is that a challenge
Glad I watched Game Theory to fathom that comparison.
Man I’m stupid
cbb88dragonborn maybe you're the blind one
As someone who grew up with the original Duke, I don't know how to feel about this ...
EDIT: Nevermind it looks gross. Fuck nostalgia
I'd be happy with a Duke with shoulder buttons
brooza664 yeah I guess that’d make things a kinda better but I just can’t man, I simply cannot. Not again, not for that amount of money
This is a weird bully episode
Wait untill they find out that it's impossiple to hit black and white on the S controller.
The 3DO controller bullied Woolie's thumb pretty hard.
_"Ha HA! You triggered the BAG OF MARBLES card"_
What an amazing episode of KOTOR.
I can't believe they're still on Montreal!
Mike The Loli King ikr. Matt walked in
Hey. Post more of these. That'd be good.
>2018
UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH.
I legit thought that was a minecraft recreation of an x-box controller for like a good ten seconds.
It looks like an Xbox controller that went on the HUGE Quest.
Only buildings can sustain the duke now.
thelaughingrouge
Its HUGE is infinite, and soon, only galaxies will be able to sate it.
TooEliteForYou Ha!
I'm seeing a big shitty controller, but what I want to know is when is Jimmy Hopkins going to trip over it?
The part at 3:10 encapsulates what was so great about Matt and Pat's really unique dynamic. :( I'm sad now
Shout out to the N64 for always having 1/3 of the controller unusable without a special grip.
Michael Hand as much as I adore the N64, that controller did not hold up well...it being my first home console kinda softened the blow, but compared to other things, there's no real reason we had to get this weird trident thing that I'm pretty sure only one game had you hold in a decent fashion, that being Kirby 64.
It’s fine most games don’t even use the dpad
It was designed for mk goro to use his extra hands
that being said, there is no better feeling than taunting in Smash bros on the N64, the way you lift your right hand and slap the L button as fast as possible before the round ends! Its like hitting the big red button to Launch the Nukes, and trying to time it so the screen pauses at just the right time for the pose as the results come up. Its the best thing about the controller, and probably the only good thing.
As a kid I had to rest the rumble pack in the back in the floor because otherwise my wrists wound break. :(
I was 7-8 years old when my family got the xbox as a gift when it launched. How I managed to play it with the duke while having child hands I still do not know to this day
Lonequacker Probably the same way a grown man would drive a lever operated track vehicle.
It might be because I was born with octopuses for hands, but I sincerely liked The Duke.
+Dr. Killer Gorilla Mountain ...Jesus christ dude, when people say play they dont mean roughly plow your controller.
I can honestly kinda vibe; I can't confirm for sure yet, not having used the Duke, but I relate to you feeling that the Dualshocks are too small, and surprisingly and thankfully even the old Xbox S has worked well, despite how big my hands are.
The very fact that some people would rather have that clunky piece of crap than $70 really blows my mind.
Really? In this age where people blow hundreds of dollars on microtransactions to get literally nothing in return this blows your mind?
Some people got a case of the big hands.
As an audio only listener, thanks for the reupload with visuals, this podcast had me googling weird farm paintings and controllers like a madman. Good on ya Woolsworth.
I appreciate the video upload with context pictures. Makes it easier to follow along ^_^
They're just mad because they've got baby hands. Especially Pat
MORE OF THESE
This is such a weird LP.
This is the first time I've wanted an Xbox one -- my nostalgia for the original Duke is too strong. It was my favourite controller even when I had tiny 11-year-old hands and I still use it when I play my Xbox.
I think we can all agree that the best controller ever made is the re4 chainsaw gamecube controller.
holy shit i had a friend that had that and she made me use that controller whenever we played. i remember it having a really really strong plastic smell
I still need to get that so badly
Miscellaneous vids now? I'm down. Pat's babby hands can't wrap around the GIRTH
AfroMetalMizu He can’t handle the Duke. Mine had the S one, which had the white and black buttons on the bottom.
AfroMetalMizu he can barely hold a mouse
3:33 Matt just couldn’t keep the feeling of realizing this is the stupidest shit ever in.
"zee ex sepctrum"
haha
5:40 I think Pat is talking about the Intellivision, and it wasn't a knob...it was a spinning disc haha
upon further listening, I was correct haha
Yeah I also guess that. Thanks for history lessons, AVGN
That was my first console haha thanks Dad
Wooly--
The Duke (I've never heard it called this until they announced this remake) -- was always known to me as The Hamburger and it is easily one of my most favorite controllers ever. Tony Hawk 2x/3...I was unstoppable. GunValkyrie...can't even imagine playing that on anything else...it'd be almost impossible.

Spend $70 to show others how latched on to the past you are.
ok microsoft
National Sperm Bank of America pls delete your profile picture and change your name
Fuzzy Gunz no dad
They know their “target demographic”
National Sperm Bank of America next they'll rerelease windows me for $1000
Well, Hyperkin sells it. Microsoft just licensed it.
That’s a bit barbaric of a controller
I love them so much, I wish they could have stayed friends.
I asked around at a local gamestop here in San Antonio, cashier said no one's walked out of there with one of the Dukes
Can someone explain why they don't put the podcasts on UA-cam?
Hot Coldman they want twitch subs
Anyone who says the Xbox 360 controller was bad is just objectively wrong.
Or used the d-pad
There are only 2 ways to improve the 360 controller. 1: Good D-pad. 2: Bring back the black and white buttons (and put them below the other buttons like they had them on the improved original xbox controller) while KEEPING the left and right bumpers (L1 and R1 for you PSPlebes).

Okay, and maybe they can make them in multiple sizes so people of all hand sizes can have their fun, but let's not get too crazy here.
I honestly don't like it very much, despite using it almost every day. I prefer the DS3.
Crazimo ps3 controller fo' life!
Literally the only thing bad about it was the d-pad and that's it.
ACKTUALLY, the XBox S Controller was MADE for the Japanese console launch. In fact, Japan had the S Controller BEFORE America, causing many to joke about how Japan always gets the good stuff even when it comes FROM America!

In retrospect this was a terrible idea because OF COURSE you lose the overlays, but the numpad wasn't confusing at all if you owned it at launch.
Also, yeah, Duke is worse than Jaguar pad.
I love these types of clips. Id watch all of these if you did this more often.
I wish they uploaded or had a video clip for that time on the podcast maybe 2 years ago when they connected every universe from different franchises in media together, I forgot what episode it was but it was on the the greatest SBFC moments ever.
G Checks The episode is called "The Grand Unified Theory" and you're right: it's one of the best.
The duke is to controllers what the flamberge is to swords
Nah man. That god awful chainsaw GameCube controller was the worst
Playerbam but it was a chainsaw
Does that even count though? The point was that it was a goddamn motherfucking chainsaw
It was more of a cool novelty thing for RE4 though (GOD i want it so bad)
Might as well include the Wu Tang Clan W and Onimusha Sword Controllers.
The cool thing with the intelvision controller was that games would come with button inserts you would set over the button pad that would list what the buttons would do in the game. Problem as many people didn't use them, they were lost, or they wore out.
Hey man those white and black buttons were legit.
I don't usually have to to listen to a full podcast, so seeing a highlight is awesome!
I remember attempting to use this controller when I was 10 and I was unworthy to wield it.
Literally Who A fucking nightmare
The Mjolnir of controllers.
Was going to mention how awful the N64 controller is, but I remembered how awful the CDI controller was.
I’ll never understand people who hate the Duke but then they’ll turn around and unironically be freaks who like the N64 controller
Following Microsoft's lead, Nintendo has decided to push N64 controller connectivity for the Switch.
1:03 - *image of new Duke with b/w buttons on top* Woolie: "This is the S"
2:02 - Woolie: "The S moved (the b/w buttons) down to the bottom"
nice save
Hail to the king baby.
The Duke is back in pog form
Mario Party 1 Tug-of-War for N64(or just the analog stick by itself), is a blister hell.
i never like the buttons on the game cube or the c stick
Did pat just say clout at 2:43?
Clout Level = Very Bad
I'm glad they uploaded this because it would've really hard to follow for audio listeners.
I have a controller that makes the duke look average size. its the Barracuda ps1 controller.
thicc ass controller I tell ya what
Been waiting for you guys to do this. Alot of extra work to edit the podcast but there's money to be made in these videos
I am tired of these jokes about my giant hand. The first such incident occurred in 1956 when...
+bazz
Ha! Simpsons jokes.
I want to see that Uganda Knuckles and Duke Xbox mash up
Thanks for posting these clips guys
I was cool with The Duke
Listening to the podcast, they're about two minutes into this segment, hit refresh on UA-cam.
...Huh, Well I guess I'll just pause and watch it here then.
Weird.
Oh god, I remember holding a Duke controller once, my tiny baby hands could barely operate it.
I learned how to claw on the Duke.
For a long time, the only game console my family had was an Intellivision. Something they didn't cover about that is most of the games for that came with overlays you slide over the "phone buttons" that illustrate what each button was supposed to do. And I expect the huge Jaguar controller was supposed to do the same thing, too.
The jaguar controller had some overlays iirc, like doom had pictures of the weapon you'd select if you pressed that button
Yep the Jaguar controller did the same. Previous Atari controllers that had a numb pad did this with some games as well.
Terrible? Yes. The worst? No
This was without a doubt the best podcast they've done in the past year or so.
I had an S type controller, and wish they ran with it so hard. When can I have my black and white buttons back? Those were great buttons for video games to use as grenade type/ammo type switchers back in the day!
My university has a bunch of Dukes lying around one of the computer labs for no adequately explained reason. We often take time out our day to mock them and marvel at their great size and unwieldiness.
bigyin396 It's like a room full of those really old cell phones.
The biggest strongest cow!
This is quite a service. Thank you.
Honestly I would love if Mircosoft re-released the 360 controller. It feels way better then the regular Xbox One does
Say what? I think the XBOne controller feels great. Plus, it still hasn't worn out on me; the sticks on the 360 controllers wore out way too fast, I went through like 4 or 5 controllers because of that.
I broke the same amount and i did not even own a 360. The right bumper stamp broke off on all of them. These where just designed poorly.
Remind me why they brought the Duke back? Who actually wanted the fat Duke controller back?
DrScaphandre I DID.
I did
Yo!
People with large hands, as well as those who kind of liked the black and white buttons.
People with a raging case of gigantism
Please do more snippets of the podcasts!!
Good God, Woolz, you need to adjust the headroom in your shot. That's ridiculous.
He needs the poster in frame tho
I liked the Duke and think them bringing it back is pretty cool for nostalgia.
I actually LOVE the duke! When me and friends played I ALWAYS go for the duke! I'm for sure going to get this controller, dont really care if people say I have bad taste in controllers, if it fells good in my hands, then im all for it!
Unfortunately this controller is primarily marketed to humans, not werewolves. Maybe that's their mistake.
LOL!! Good one! XP I'm glad they made the mistake, then we wouldnt have this controller! HAHA!!
The worst controller is the N64 controller. That thing was just hideous.
d-pad mode is very comfortable. analog stick mode, not so much.
Jacob Juarez its actually pretty good for the N64 games
It's a dildo with a wingspan
Obviously you were born too late, son.
Kaz Kobb I was 13 when that console came out and I concur. There’s a reason why every controller now rip off the SNES and PlayStation.
I'll be picking one of those bad boys up.
as an audio listener it's nice when these clips happen
The S controller is pretty awesome. The triggers are a little low and it lacks shoulder buttons, but that's what the 360 pad is for, which is my favorite controller. The late model ones are the best
HOW DARE YOU, THE DUKE CONTROLLER IS A MASTERPIECE
I didn't mind the Duke. The only thing I hated was when the triggers shocked me.
Xbox always has the absolute WORST D-Pads in gaming.
Imagine spending $70 on a meme.
I'm sure people have paid more for hospitalization for eating tide pods
+ExcelExcel
Meme? What?
The Duke controller is legitimately one of the best controllers ever made? I guess you're fucking tiny? But, I'm 6'6''. Most controllers give me goddamn HAND CRAMPS. It sucks!
dude i have big hand this controller is not in any way shape or form good it really is a $70 meme
+Azrael Mortem
I don't think 12 year olds do a lot of buying controllers anyway.
Szriko with that shitty mentality I think you’re the 12 y/o lol
I've actually holded one of the CD-I Scoop controllers. That shit makes the Stadia controller feel like an elite Xbox controller.
I really liked the big controller, it fit my hands better than the smaller one. Then again I came from using a Dreamcast controller before I got an Xbox, so it was more what I was used to. I'm glad they're putting this back out there it's nice to have weird options for controllers.
I have tiny baby hands and always found the original xbox controller to be pretty comfy
I like this highlight reel thing you guys are doing :)
Makes me want to go back and watch the AVGN videos about consoles again.
Glad you put this up. Never owned an original xbox, and when playing at friends house who only had s controllers - so I'd have been so confused listening to the audio-only podcast and not known what you guys were on about with "the Duke".
