5:43 Before you could protect your servers in Alpha and Beta, there would always be random people logging onto servers and destroying spawn. This was just a thing that happened. We moved very far from spawn to prevent our bases from being griefed. On the server we ran ourselves.
Man, I didn´t expect the old style of building to hit me with so much nostalgia. It was somehow more fun to build with the few block options back then.
Something pretty specific that I like is exploring abandoned beta 1.8 servers. There's something about the 1.8 additions like melons, stone bricks, glass panes, giant mushrooms, etc being used everywhere that i really like. + beta 1.8/early release is technically what I grew up watching and is the most nostalgic for me ;P
@@Kaktus-xj7sj the only one I've explored is zackscotts server called "scottland" from ep 300 (there's a Google drive out there with world downloads from different points in time, specifically 300 was around 1.8) Another cool server is one that isn't public but was shown off by philza on a video where he toured his old worlds and one of em was a 1.8 server.

Beta 1.8 felt so shortlived compared to 1.7.3 and before, but maybe that's because my friends and me noped out very fast back to 1.7.3 and only started playing newer versions again from 1.0.0 onward. I'm surprised there still are active servers for it.
It's so relaxing to watch this because I'd love too see it but the depressing emptiness of what was once my childhood is very hard to bare alone. It's comforting that you're doing it, narrating, and I get to watch instead of participate.
What I miss about old Minecraft was how simple everything was. I find modern Minecraft so complicated that it's not even fun anymore, and hasn't been in years. One of these days I'm gonna get back on my 360 and just enjoy the little things like the tutorial world.
Same, the nowaday Minecraft is made to attract people that cannot enjoy simple things. People that have a very short attention span and needs super fancy new stuff every soon and then. I remember the day they added fireworks in Minecraft, I was genuinely soo excited about a super stupid thing. But the game was good, now it’s not a chill game anymore…
This is one of the better forgotten server videos I’ve seen Honestly I think this goes for your entire channel but I like the relaxed vibe it has it’s nice
Thanks, the title was just more to fit the trend than anything. I prefer to keep a more laid back style and it's good because it normally works with the type of content I make. Glad you're enjoying it :)
something about old school megabuilds. Its before designs got hyper complicated and detailed. Mind you the current designs people make are works of art but there was something special about seeing huge structures with only 1-2 design aspects repeated. Also, paths. The older style way of connecting builds together with paths in a close proximity as people built out is probably the most nostalgic part. We almost never see that style anymore.
Staff member of AlphaPlace and RetroMC here. Obviously, I have the same opinions as Gavin - AlphaPlace, RetroMC and Old School MC are *far* from abandoned, thanks to the difference in the culture between large, modern-MC servers and ones running on legacy MC versions. These semi-tight knit communities and laid-back culture are what I now prefer, stemming from my decision to join these servers as my first-ever multiplayer MC experiences. I also thank you for visiting these servers :)
Yeah it totally makes sense that the communities would be smaller. The original title I had for the video was different but I changed it to fit the trend a bit more. Thank you for continuing to support these servers and it was great to visit them :)
It's sad to see some of the builds empty but some of these server's do still have active communities and they're still up for people to explore so it's not all bad :)
I love seeing player towns like the ones on the oldschoolminecraft server, The disjointed feel of the builds not adhering to a particular style, plus the randomness of things like giant among us pixel arts is the epitome of Minecraft's charm.
Former betalands player here(loyalwolf), there is an idea out there that life in this universe comes and goes, blips of consciousness in a sea of time and i feel these servers are very much that. They start with humble beginnings, a few people wanting to live out the golden age of mc again, eventually towns form that turn to cities with players linking them up with roads and railways. Cities become nations and for months and years the server thrives with projects and builds. Over time the original playerbase gets replaced either by people not having enough time to play anymore or disagreements/drama that goes down that usually results in an exodus of players. The server recovers for a brief time with a new playerbase but is not the same, the passion and care is lost by players and staff, yet some veterans still remain maintaining the infrastructure and welcoming new players in hopes of seeing a revival but even they too after months and years lose interest or have no more friends online that play. now there are very few players remaining jealously guarding what remains of the golden age of the server with years worth of knowledge of server history and stories of players to never be seen again. Then one day there is no one and all thats left are the partially griefed monuments and structures of players who spent weeks months and even years building with friends just sitting there with no one to see them again. Then eventually someone starts a new server sometimes with refugees of a previous one and it all starts again...
some servers still do it, with the exception of protection on chests. You tend to find that servers with no land claims have the sweetest and most trusting communities
I miss being a kid just randomly joining SMP servers and making friends with complete randoms online and just having a time man, I remember I met these 4 other guys and we literally had no form of communication at all but we would all collectively hop on after school and we would set times by making a schedule via signs in game. Everyone stopped hopping on one by one until I did aswell, I remember checking it back 3 years ago when the server was still alive. Good times.
This is a great video! As someone that played in 2010 in Minecraft Classic but didn't buy premium until Beta 1.8.1, it''s so cool seeing that alpha servers still exist
Talk about a nostalgia hit. My entire childhood hit me all at once. When I was a kid, my brothers and i only had the original Xbox 360 edition (before you could even trade with villagers and before villagers had roles) and we had no internet or Xbox Live so we couldn't update the game at all until about 2019/2020 when we got a Nintendo switch. Thanks for taking me back, I miss those days.
nice video, servers run on older versions certainly have a different feel to them, but it's always nice to play with others also, thanks for the mention :)
I miss old Minecraft sooo much!!! Like all I wanna do is play survival games again and I literally can't because no servers even offer it anymore. Bro I miss Breeze Island :(
WAIT WHAT!? How did my castle and dragon make it onto Retr MC 9:30? I built that on another server called Betalands years ago. Kinda cool to see it on a random youtube video in 2024
God this is so depressing. We all spent hours laughing and having fun in Minecraft and we didn't even realize we were living in the good ol days. God I want to stop getting older

You got a great channel already dude. I think with each update of clutter they add to Minecraft, interest in the old versions will continue grow. I can definitely see your channel getting bigger, keep the old versions relevant!
12 years doesn’t sound like that much but seeing how far and how much minecraft has evolved from alpha is amazing. It’s like opening up a history book seeing all the old builds that have been there for over a decade. Alpha looks like something I’d play on the PS1
It sad how most of them are abandoned I love these old worlds. They’re pretty beautiful but sadly, I abandoned Minecraft alone thank you for showing me these old worlds where I can remember the days that I can build without no worry.
I got tired of minecraft always updating and losing my builds on servers that would update and erase the worlds, so I made my own on 1.12.2 back in February of 2018. It's been running ever since and currently has 524 days of server uptime. I make backups regularly too.
what i kinda dislike about modern minecraft servers are players that decide to move as far away as humanly possible even so far, as to go towards the map border literally thousands of blocks away from spawn. so todays players have a minimum of 5000+ blocks between them.
To think about how many memories have been lost due to old servers like these shutting down or being completely reset. I sadly wasn't there to experience the Alpha and Beta days of Minecraft, instead I started on release version 1.4.2. Recently however, I've been playing some Beta and Alpha versions and there's just something so welcoming about them, something so palpable.
It's sad to think about but the most important thing, in the end, is that people had fun on them whilst they were up. Glad to hear you're having fun in the old versions :)
@@Kaktus-xj7sj thats true, the memories will live on forever, even if there is no longer any way to look back on them. Your channel also looks very promising, hopefully it'll blow up and in turn you'll bring life back into these old versions!
no matter how much crap they throw into the modern versions, the busy-ness of modern minecraft worlds/servers will never compare to that first few times loading into a simple quaint world back in these old days. i used to play on a server called Rivalcraft back in 2011/2012, it had such an amazing little community. like 20 people on at any given time, everyone knew each other, no grief protection but everyone respected each others property, it was peak, and i wish i didnt take it for granted

i never got to experience the alpha/beta days of minecraft during my childhood, but seeing these chill videos showcasing them made me feel a sense of nostalgia ive never even experienced before, thus i cant imagine what its like to be part of the community back then these servers are like relics to me, i hope they can be preserved for as long as possible! they really are impressively made and formed. hope everyone who was part of these servers are doing well today and still creating! side note: your videos are so chill by the way, they help with my insomnia 👍

Old Minecraft will always have a special place in my heart. I still love modern Minecraft, at least from a creative standpoint. I just miss the nostalgia of experiencing the glory of old genuine builds and players.
Remembering Minecraft in it’s olden days feels really nostalgic for me. I remember playing in these versions with younger online friends and just goofing around and having fun. But things have changed a lot, and I haven’t really remained in contact with anyone, and the worlds we made weren’t really saved either. Looking at this now is kind of revisiting those memories but in a new light, this is a great video.

@@Kaktus-xj7sj Very true, a lot of the builds you showcased demonstrated what’s possible with the simple beta block palette. I particularly liked some of the foliage around the builds and the use of multiple types of stone for more texture in a single pathway. Also loved the niche uses of netherrack!
Theres just something about the old alpha and beta styles of building that is just so irresistibly beautiful. They feel like actual works of art as opposed to the common utilitarian bases, or the wildly extravagant base designs you see so much of today.

Its still absolutely insane seeing retromc on here though and getting this much attention.
I started watching Minecraft videos towards the end of alpha and started playing in the middle of beta. The most fun memories I ever had was towards the end of beta and just after official release. Those were the days
There’s something just so cool about older builds and them needing to “make do” with the more limited block types. Modern builds look fantastic, but they never have to get creative with what blocks they’re using, there are blocks for basically anything they’d want to build.
Person who plays alphaplace The server is not dead, it averages 5-7 ppl at peak hours and maxes at like 10. Abandoned is gone, no one logging on. Cool vid, might want to change
There wasn't anyone on when I was there but that's probably because I might've joined on a slow day and not peak times. This wasn't my original title but I decided to change it to better fit the algorithm whilst although it may not fit all the servers featured in the video does still bring attention to them which I think is ultimately a good thing. I still might change it tho I'm not sure. Thanks for the comment

I remember playing on a server(nothing alpha or beta) a few years ago and played it absolutely religiously every afternoon from school and free time I had. I had a group of dedicated Skype friends who played on this server. Probably the most fun I’ll ever have in Minecraft. The one thing I remember was we all were making our own AoT walls and a bunch of moderators thought we were cheating in materials because it was fucking massive. No, we were just a group of nerds with far too much free time. Then one day that server crashed and the owner had no backups and everything restarted from new. We were all devastated. After that, our group of friends slowly started moving on with life or completely left their socials. I miss the days we used to play together. Some key memories were made during that period of time I won’t forget about. That was around 5 or so years ago.
This is so eerie to look at. I kinda relate to these servers because I used to run a server back in Beta 1.7.3/1.8 and I still have it (altought now it's a private, up-to-date and not a public server) and the difference in architecture and how we used to build is very nostalgic and reminicent of the servers I saw in this video
The funny thing is that those servers aren't actually old for the most part. OSM runs since like 2019, AlphaPlace since 2020. I think the oldest still-running legacy version server is RetroMC and it was founded in like 2014

Nostalgia take me back. I miss these times a lot for some reason.
Yeah it is fun to walk around all the builds. Let me know if there are any good beta 1.8 servers to check out lol :)
@@Kaktus-xj7sj the only one I've explored is zackscotts server called "scottland" from ep 300 (there's a Google drive out there with world downloads from different points in time, specifically 300 was around 1.8)
Another cool server is one that isn't public but was shown off by philza on a video where he toured his old worlds and one of em was a 1.8 server.
@@Kaktus-xj7sj if you find any and would like to explore them with someone else, i'd love to join in since i first started joining servers in that version and despite beta 1.7.3 being my favorite, 1.8 still has a big place in my heart as well
Beta 1.8 felt so shortlived compared to 1.7.3 and before, but maybe that's because my friends and me noped out very fast back to 1.7.3 and only started playing newer versions again from 1.0.0 onward. I'm surprised there still are active servers for it.
It's so relaxing to watch this because I'd love too see it but the depressing emptiness of what was once my childhood is very hard to bare alone. It's comforting that you're doing it, narrating, and I get to watch instead of participate.
Hi, thank you for commenting and I'm glad you were able to appreciate these old builds as they're super cool :)
@@Maubaldyou can literally play the older versions 😭
Ya id say around just before the sidearm slot update (shields) was the peak
This is one of the better forgotten server videos I’ve seen
Honestly I think this goes for your entire channel but I like the relaxed vibe it has it’s nice
Thank you for checking out Alpha Anarchy
Thank you for continuing to support these servers and it was great to visit them :)
might as well be abandoned
This video makes me so happy yet sad at the same time. Miss the early days of Minecraft
No protection vanilla was the golden age. So much fun.
Land claims are cancer
some servers still do it, with the exception of protection on chests. You tend to find that servers with no land claims have the sweetest and most trusting communities
me and my wife love it 😊

Abandoned servers make me sad. All the time and fun people had there just forgotten. Man sad,
All these builds and servers give a lot of inspiration to me.
They gave me a lot of inspiration too :)
nice video, servers run on older versions certainly have a different feel to them, but it's always nice to play with others
also, thanks for the mention :)
Glad to hear you liked the video and no problem for the mention you deserve it. Love the content, keep it up :)
As someone that plays on retromc, thank you for shouting out the server
Of course it was a lot of fun to check out!
Kinda cool to see it on a random youtube video in 2024
Betalands was acquired by retromc and they transferred some of the builds before they shut betalands down permanently
God this is so depressing. We all spent hours laughing and having fun in Minecraft and we didn't even realize we were living in the good ol days. God I want to stop getting older
great video! i've been in the alpha/beta community for a while now, and have played alwaysalpha and alphaplace for a while, and it was really nice to see a lot of my builds shown in your video! thank you for making this, and if you'd be interested i can show you even more cool servers that weren't in your video.
Glad you liked it and I'd definitely be interested in more servers. Thank you!
You got a great channel already dude. I think with each update of clutter they add to Minecraft, interest in the old versions will continue grow. I can definitely see your channel getting bigger, keep the old versions relevant!
Thanks for the support, I will continue to make these types of videos :)
12 years doesn’t sound like that much but seeing how far and how much minecraft has evolved from alpha is amazing. It’s like opening up a history book seeing all the old builds that have been there for over a decade. Alpha looks like something I’d play on the PS1
Everything seemed so simple and innocent about old Minecraft.
It sad how most of them are abandoned I love these old worlds. They’re pretty beautiful but sadly, I abandoned Minecraft alone thank you for showing me these old worlds where I can remember the days that I can build without no worry.
Dont cry because its over, smile because it happened
I got tired of minecraft always updating and losing my builds on servers that would update and erase the worlds, so I made my own on 1.12.2 back in February of 2018. It's been running ever since and currently has 524 days of server uptime. I make backups regularly too.
what i kinda dislike about modern minecraft servers are players that decide to move as far away as humanly possible even so far, as to go towards the map border literally thousands of blocks away from spawn. so todays players have a minimum of 5000+ blocks between them.
I blame PvP for this mentality. 1000 blocks and under is a death sentence for your builds
makes sense considering some people either try to kill players or try to steal from / destroy their builds
Retro MC is so cool! I have been exploring it for a while, lots of really interesting builds in old building style to look at. Nostalgic!
glad to see its not a "look at these creepy abandoned servers" video and more of a nostalgia trip for the people who would have played servers like this back in the day.
There is some beauty in these anarchy servers...cant describe the feeling of it
8:06 for the entire duration of the music and walking around the server was like a historical footage. Has a feeling of sadness, nostalgia, creativity and happiness at the same time.
Exploring Empty MC servers is like walking through ghost towns.....You see all these buildings and you can almost get a feel for what life was once like for it's inhabitants.....the lives they built there....the memories they made.
i never got to experience the alpha/beta days of minecraft during my childhood, but seeing these chill videos showcasing them made me feel a sense of nostalgia ive never even experienced before, thus i cant imagine what its like to be part of the community back then
these servers are like relics to me, i hope they can be preserved for as long as possible! they really are impressively made and formed. hope everyone who was part of these servers are doing well today and still creating!
side note: your videos are so chill by the way, they help with my insomnia 👍
Thank you so much for this comment, it's so nice to hear my videos help you :) Yeah it's great that these servers are still kept up and it's nice to see some of the owners commenting on this video.
What a pleasure to find this video, love the slow, calm pace of it!
3:41 I feel like this went over everyones head.

I really love videos about old servers. It’s very interesting to see structures and bases that random people made and left there.
It was a fun one to record as there were so many cool builds to check out!
These bring a sense of nostalgia very few things bring...
I have an odd appreciation for the old style of building in the early days. Sure, a lot of it is ‘bad’, but it had a charm to it.
Man the nostalgia this video bought back is incredible. Great recommendation by YT
Wow, some of those builds were actually incredible! Better than something I could build in modern Minecraft LOL
They're lots of great inspiration to take from the builds on the servers!
I love old minecraft! Thank you for the showcase.
These older style builds with the music hits different. Everything just seemed so made with love back then.
Theres just something about the old alpha and beta styles of building that is just so irresistibly beautiful. They feel like actual works of art as opposed to the common utilitarian bases, or the wildly extravagant base designs you see so much of today.
Awesome creativity done by people!!!
Thanks! (I play RetroMC)

Awesome to see there are still people joining these ancient servers
man, i miss these so much, i remember the first server i joined back in 2012 before i had even bought a premium account, i lived in a large village with me and 20 other people. such a good memory
This really highlights what I miss most about early Minecraft the chaotic building by countless people all stacked on top of eachother almost making an mc escher maze we didnt have a big block pool and didnt really worry about greifers and we built amazing wierd cities and I miss them
I discovered the Old School Minecraft server from your video, and I just wanted to say thank you for enlightening me on beta minecraft multiplayer. My time on Old School Minecraft has been some of my favorite time on minecraft ever. Crazy how a server like Hypixel doesn’t even come close to these beta and alpha servers.
As a 14 almost 15 year vet I wish I could go back in times, this brought back alot of nostalgia. I'm happy the game is still updated to this day, I cant believe the game is almost 20 years old. I'm old lol
Former betalands player here (loyalwolf) who had my city transferred to retromc unsuccessfully(corrupted). Way back in 2018/2019 i was always saying oldschool minecraft would become popular again and it was just a matter of time, unfortunately too long for betalands and the crazy stuff on there rip. Its still absolutely insane seeing retromc on here though and getting this much attention.
I started watching Minecraft videos towards the end of alpha and started playing in the middle of beta. The most fun memories I ever had was towards the end of beta and just after official release. Those were the days
This is the era I grew up in. So nice to see Minecraft in such humble nostalgic times.
There’s something just so cool about older builds and them needing to “make do” with the more limited block types.
Modern builds look fantastic, but they never have to get creative with what blocks they’re using, there are blocks for basically anything they’d want to build.

The server is not dead, it averages 5-7 ppl at peak hours and maxes at like 10.

Every Minecraft world has it's own history and lore. It's always fun exploring old Minecraft worlds, solo or not. Really whish I still had some of my original worlds, and the small community server my friend and i used to run when we were in high school/college. Ah, those were the days.
The creativity that some people have is off the charts. I wish I was blessed with the ability to do a fraction of what some can do
It's just fascinating to see a place in digital limbo. The modern age often sees useless stuff online deleted, but I'm glad these are still around.

OSMC player here, we've definitely grown since this video and you can find as many as 30 players on at one time.
I think the oldest still-running legacy version server is RetroMC and it was founded in like 2014
Oh, and also OSM is very far from dead. I think it's one of if not the most popular beta server
"checking out these old abandoned servers"
>3:16 Among Us pixel art
When I think of an old Minecraft server, I tend to think of one ranging all the way back to 2011, not 2018/19. Though now I think about it, people these days think 5 years was 10yrs ago in gaming years (especially when people look at GPU's).
Either way it's nice to see someone exploring servers that were once inhabited, and seeing what was once there. I hope people don't grief them.
