I'm looking for a cruise away from riff raff. The 'working class' hoardes ruined my last cruise. I suppose avoid family type cruises on large ships and go for something reassuringly expensive?
You're welcome, Teresa. Glad you found it helpful and it's got you exited for your forthcoming holiday on Discovery. We both hope you have the best time :)
Hey Jay and Dan, Thanks so much for taking the time to share this outstanding review. I found it so helpful and informativeShe seems such a beaut. Been so excited to watch this , since I;m booked to sail on Discovery Aug 30th for her treasures of the medditteranean cruise and I;ve just gone and booked her for 2 weeks in 2023 when she relocates stateside for the Sunshine states and Sands cruise followed by American Dream!
Hello Gareth, I’m glad you enjoyed it and found it so helpful. We’re in the process of doing a video review of our time on Discovery, so keep an eye out for it later on in the week. Wow! Don’t blame you booking one of the new American cruises on her; the itineraries look amazing.
Thanks for posting this! Never given this ship much consideration before watching this video, but she actually looks really nice. Maybe once she’s had the cabin renovation I’ll book something.
I had the pleasure of of being on this ship in Dec 2021 amazing experience . I'm going back on in August for a week then gonna do Christmas and New year aswell . Really can't wait to get in surf and turf again
You’ll have an amazing time onboard! Plus we know the feeling, seeing ships makes us want to constantly pack our bags and go on holiday! 😂 Have you got any other cruises coming up!? ☺️
Thank you so much! We highly recommended it, we loved our time on Marella and looking forward to our next sailing later this year on the Marella Voyager ☺️
Just to confirm, this isn't Discovery 2? We haven't cruised before but quite like this ship. I don't want to book the wrong one. Thanks for the great vids. GJ.
Hi, loved the Marella Explorer tour, going on her in March. Just a little point, the backing music is almost as loud as the commentary. Keep up the great work.
Your tour of the Discovery brought back so many wonderful memories... I was on the last cruise the ship made before she was taken out of service for a refit, during which she gained the Crab & Anchor. Before that, it was another variety and entertainment centre, but I just can't remember what it was called. Although built more to operate in sunny seas, it was up to the cold North we steered when I was on her, all the way to the Artic Circle, as we visited numerous venues along Norway's coast, with the highlight of the whole cruise being a remarkable display of the Northern Lights! It was bitterly cold so far north, at about 3am, but the captain slowed down a lot as we crowded the upper decks, so at least the wind chill was reduced which limited the frostbite to losing a few fingers and toes! 😂 The crew were simply magnificent, there was absolutely nothing that was too much trouble for them as they worked tirelessly to make sure absolutely every possible need of the passengers was met. All-in-all, a fantastic ship, and may she continue to sail the seas for years to come.
Thanks for your lovely comment! We're a big fan of this ship, and Marella in general. We're sailing aboard Marella Voyager in July, can't wait to see how she compares!
Looking at the possibility of booking a two week cruise in next for our honeymoon so this video has been a real help. One question though. Is the indoor pool an adult only section?
Hello Ryan, thanks for watching! Discovery will be lovely, as she had a huge refurb in October 2022, including brand new cabins. The Solarium Pool isn't an adult-only pool, however we never saw any children in there whilst onboard. Children are mostly attracted to the main pool outside as it features a children's splash area. Hope you have a great time!
Not really. As a whole, Marella are pretty causal. They do have a ‘Dress to Impress’ night which is their formal equivalent, but most people are smart casual.
We've decided to boycott P&O for 2023 as we've been disappointed in the falling standards for a while. We would say try Discovery. She as a ship offers fantastic value for money, and she's just had a thorough refit!
Amazing video, I'm going for my honeymoon in two weeks! May I ask, is this how empty it is on the cruise or was this shot early in the morning? Thanks!
Hello! It was done quite early in the morning, however the ship was under half full! If you’re going to the Caribbean, I’d imagine the capacity would be the same or even less! Hope you have an amazing time :)
@@sailawaymag haha yes we are going to the Caribbean, great knowledge! Oh okay, thank you for the heads up, might be able to get shorter queues for the food and drinks do you think? :) thank you!
What a great review. You mentioned the ship appears a bit tired,… Do you know if there are plans for a dry dock upgrade for her ? Thank you for posting the video,.. We thought it was great !
Hello John, thanks for your kind feedback! Unfortunately, it won’t be anytime soon. I know she went in for a refit last year in September I believe. The condition of the pool areas and interior facilities are great, and were clearly done last year. However, it seems that both Royal Caribbean and Marella have just put some new carpet down in the cabins and that’s it. Checkout my tours of a Deluxe Balcony Cabin on our channel to give you an idea of what I’m talking about. A cruise is what you make it, if you go with the intention of having a good time, I’m pretty sure you’ll have one. Discovery was a decent ship, just needed a bit of TLC here and there. Best regards, Jay
We were on this cruise 10th Sept for 7 days, having done over 15 other Marella Cruises and it was the worst for food, service and drinks by a country mile. It was like the staff (great people) didn’t know and totally not trained
Hello Graham. That’s very disappointing. This was our second cruise with Marella, and we were on Explorer the previous week. The difference in food, service and condition of cabins was day and night. It wouldn’t stop us from cruising with Marella, we just hope that it was a one off. Still had a good time though :) going to try MEx2 next year for sure.

Hello Daniel! Discovery is a great ship for families. I would say that the Discovery and Discovery 2 offer a much better choice for children, and families as a whole as opposed to the Explorer class of ship! One of the complaints I had about the Discovery as mentioned in my video was the condition of the cabins, however I’m pleased to say that they are being fully gutted and refurbished in November 2022. However, Discovery 2 has much better renovated cabins if this is something that concerns you. Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’ll love it and discover the ‘cruising bug’ we all seem to catch :)
