In the mid 90s The NBA misjudged the number of women who like basketball. Then they ignored why those women liked the game. Now, they can't get rid of the WNBA because of optics.
I feel like this point is being overlooked. They’d need to continue to put up numbers and negotiate a much higher tv deal before they see significant money from this entire thing. Attendance is way up, viewership is up, and so are jersey sales so there are signs of things trending favorably
They need to hold 2 5-minute quarter games and air them just before a regular season nba game, and see if that will raise viewership, sort of like an opening act to the headliner. Or they need to tie the games in together somehow. Put it as the half time show. Half time is 15-mins. Extend it to 20mins and put 2 5-minute quarters within that time for the WNBA. A mini-series during halftime instead of a performer and long commercials. Sure the audience might be on their bathroom and food run, but there will still be a TV audience.
They had the opportunity to showcase their saviour at the Olympics. The eyes that would have watched the players from the WNBA would be in the millions. They deserve to go bankrupt. I feel like this point is being overlooked. They’d need to continue to put up numbers and negotiate a much higher tv deal before they see significant money from this entire thing. Attendance is way up, viewership is up, and so are jersey sales so there are signs of things trending favorably
They need to hold 2 5-minute quarter games and air them just before a regular season nba game, and see if that will raise viewership, sort of like an opening act to the headliner. Or they need to tie the games in together somehow. Put it as the half time show. Half time is 15-mins. Extend it to 20mins and put 2 5-minute quarters within that time for the WNBA. A mini-series during halftime instead of a performer and long commercials. Sure the audience might be on their bathroom and food run, but there will still be a TV audience.

Great right? Well, the WNBA before taxes will only get 1 billion of that or 90 million a year. It ends up being about double the media revenue previously. I know merch sales should be up too. So it's better than previously but is it enough? I'm skeptical

They need to find a better way to market them. And unfortunately, that way of marketing them is through the men. I had no thought whatsoever to watch the WNBA until I watched that 3PT contest this past all-star weekend. And from that point up until now, I had zero interest in watching a single game until Caitlyn Clark purely because the credit I saw her be given from greats in the game.
So, as much as I’m sure it sucks for the women, let the men who have made the game a multi-billionaire dollar industry market you. Stop trying to market yourself. Because from everything I’ve seen, that has ALWAYS backfired. Their version of marketing themselves isn’t convienent at all. They either try to force a rivalry with whoever is popular at the moment or they say “anyone in the WNBA could beat (insert name of NBA player here) in a 1v1.”
Edit: I’m sure the brand would grow a lot if they played their own brand of basketball instead of constantly comparing themselves and their game to NBA players. I couldn’t even tell you the amount of times I’ve seen compilations where a WNBA player will compare themselves to a NBA player and then there’s nonstop clips of them either missing wide open shots or yarding a fast break layup straight over the left side of rim and off the right.
