People who have never surfed or boogie boarded can't appreciate how powerful the water is, can't really conceive of what this is like (and neither can I, but I can get closer). I grew up body-boarding (and a little surfing), albeit never on waves bigger than 10 feet. I remember vividly the world going silent and heart-stopping while paddling over a "big" (10 foot) face and the massive relief if not getting sucked over the falls; the power of getting axed, or smashed against the ocean bottom, or both in the midst of two cycles through the washing machine on the same wave; the terror and moment of decision to commit on dropping in, trying to control the board on the free fall and bounce, learning not to breath right away after wipeouts when you pop back up for fear of getting slammed with and inhaling another wall of water or being lost in a deep foamy mush... all of those things I have felt seem so puny and such a minor reference point compared to this. We can always appreciate things more the more we know about them. This really is wild. What is it like being ragdolled over 20-50 feet up and down while being dragged across a football field under water? And how do you do anything on a boogie board with little teeny flippers in a sea of foam when you pop up? Just seems totally dependent on a jetski to save you from dying every time.
