Hey gents, as a new hockey dad in Toronto, I’ve had a front row seat to the lunacy which is youth hockey. Your podcast has really helped me navigate these new waters. I recommend your podcast to whomever I can. 👍👍

What about Father/Son coach combos where the sons don’t belong on the team, especially at the “AAA” level?

Just lived through that. Basically thew money out the window bc the kids were never coached and I got forced to go find another skills program so my guy could keep pace. To rub salt in the would we tried to switch Leagues and ran into the same issue so we are just doing town this coming year. Plus side is I get to work w my son more closely for a year so not all bad. Keep an eye out for it. If something looks fishy. It probably is and it can be a bear.

If teams are already set before the tryout then its a disgrace for kids hockey and a waste of time for late bloomer kids. It feels like your kid needs to make a AA/AAA team when they are under 10 or they get ignored after that even if they do better in the tryout than kids already on the team the year before. This is wrong. I have seen it myself. Kids that may not have been the best at 10 can improve a lot in 2 years compared to other kids yet it seems they are not looked at because the team is already set. Also, it's hard for taller bigger kids to get on these teams as bigger kids are more ackward at young ages than the smaller kids. Smaller kids are more maneuverable and skate better at young ages than the taller kids. The taller kids catch up later when there muscle developes. For kids the tryout should be giving a fair shake for all kids and not prioritize kids that were on the team the year before. I see kids getting on these AA teams scoring one or two goals a year and yet a chance is not given to a new kid. This just isn't the correct way to do things.
