As a Maltese I was sorry to see you British leave. This video clip really makes me feel old now, as 41 years passed since 1979. Now I'm 61. The black & white filming and the style of the reporting exacerbates how everything changed. By the way, on the last days in March 1979 the BFBS were selling mementos such as T-shirts, and I had heard the last BFBS FM transmission in the midnight of 31 March 1979.
I arrived back on the Island in June 72. I was asked if I still wanted Malta as a choice of posting on the Monday. Having said yes I arrived at RAF Innsworth on the Tuesday for kitting along with 60 odd other Fire fighters and arrived late afternoon Wednesday at which point several guys were met off the plane and taken to the Crash bays near the civvy airport to cover a night shift. The rest of us were bused to the accommodation site where we had to literally find and put together our beds. I was in the block nearest the main road and the cinema.
britain wasnt bothered either way they were invited in to get rid of the french, but malta hasnt turned out well ,far too many people ,far too much traffic too many badly built buildings, corrupt government,so a bit of a mess
An island with economic problems? - No; British Problems. Since, Malta now has the most super yachts registered in the world - more than every other nation on Earth combined; it is experiencing record tourism; the Maltese on average make a fortune; the quality of life is among the best in the world; they are good friends with their neighbours again; it is rated most secure place on Earth. - It does appear, mr, that British were bad for business...
you forgot to mention corrupt government, one of the most densely populated places in the world, terrible traffic congestion,no beaches and they have to import over half of their food,so do you actually live there ,the main tourists in valletta are day cruise ship tourists, and also malta has a high proportion of asylum seekers mostly africans and muslims and most supermarkets are staffed by immigrants,so not the best place to live to be honest
when you see malta now all badly built up corrupt government, plenty of asylum seekers.malta took the wrong direction and could have chosen to be like the channel islands ,self governing but with less corruption and some sort of order
was on this clip as mum is now dead it was lovely to see her again

The film is from the earlier temporary 1972 withdrawal
