  • In this video Mark Tachna shows how to transfer audio reel to reel using a Mac. The MAC is running El Captain and he is using Audacity along with a software program called Masster AVCAP which gives him the ability to have Audacity recognize the audio source.
Here are the Amazon Links for the hardware that you will need along with a link to Audacity (free download). By clicking on the Amazon links and making a purchase, you will be supporting my channel monetarily which I thank you for.

hey man, thank you very much for the explanation. You are the only one on UA-cam that I have seen doing this explanation. Please, I have a question.can i do that on windows or it just for mac ? I have a tape that is very important to my grandfather and I want to convert it to mp3

You can do this on Windows as well and you don't need the Maaster Cap software. You should be able to find the converter I used on Amazon and just plug it in. Audacity should detect it. @@TheMediaNerdMT @The Media Nerd Thank you very much. I have already subscribed to the channel, and there is no problem with the late reply, but I have a more important question, which is that this converter is not available in my country, and another is available in the name of easy cap. He does the same jobs as the other, so can i use it or what do you think ? before buying it

I think that if it says it does the same job, then get it. If it doesn't work, hopefully you can return it.

I have a very similar machine but get a ton of hiss when recording from my audio interface into the machine i need help so BADLY its a 1733SS Akai.....please tell me exactly where to plug my audio outs into the reel and what buttons to be pressed down

Try using the outputs on the back of the player. There should be a red and white rca output that will go into your audio video converter. It is much better than using the front headphone Jack. You should have three audio tracks in the front to choose from. Press the buttons and let each one run for a minute to determine which track has the recording or if it is stereo. Also use a q tip with some rubbing alcohol to clean the heads. Please make sure to subscribe to the channel.

I understand you use a Mac, is the process about the same for a windows system...?

Yes but I don’t think you need maaster cap. I believe audacity will recognize the usb devise that you use. Also try using the rear left and right outs, not the head phone jack. You’ll get better results

I've just bought an Akai 1710 so I can play an old reel to reel. I'm now trying to digitise to my iMac M1 and MacBook Air M2. I have a Climaxdigital VCap which I've already used to transfer VHS tapes. But, the headphone jack I have only has Red and black plugs. I've tried using the black male to white female but it's not working. Any advise more than welcome.

I don't think that the black to white really makes a difference. Since you are using the headphone jack (like I am doing in the video because the back stereo jacks didn't seem to work) is the male quarter inch jack stereo? You can tell by looking at it and seeing if there are two rings going around it (mine are green) the 1/4 inch adapter to the RCA cables have black rings. Are you also using audacity? Make sure that the Maaster cap is on as well and that Audacity is detecting it.

    • @EllenDean

@@TheMediaNerdMT it's 1/4 inch but there are two rings on it. It's the same one I used to transfer from an old Sony amplifier so that it would work the same. The RCA cables don't seem to have any rings. I have Climaxdigital which works the same as Masster Cap, but that won't load either. I'm wondering if it's because I'm using the new Macs?

Try downloading audacity (free download)and use that directly bypassing climax digital. I have a feeling the new iMacs don’t need the extra interface. This will make for a good video! Please hit that subscribe button to help support the channel.

@@TheMediaNerdMT I already have Audacity and thought of that, but I haven't got anything to plug the red and black plugs into. I have a Caldigit but nowhere on there to plug these jacks. ie jacks to USB.

Then you will need a different capture devise. Go to my other video and in the description, there is a link to a different capture devise. ua-cam.com/video/yPJR8u3RgFg/v-deo.htmlsi=x8bwHY4b_WnScsCz

You will need a few things which I thought that I had explained in the video.
Audacity for the software program which is a free download so do a search for it on google.
A converter (here is an amazon link www.amazon.com/Converter-Digital-Capture-Support-Windows/dp/B087TDN2FL/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=dvd+converter+to+digital&qid=1690220389&sprefix=dvd+converter%2Caps%2C198&sr=8-5
I have to use another software program called Maaster Cap which you will need to find on google which will run in the background of audacity. (watch the video I did)
A RCA converter to quarter inch stereo jack to connect the converter to the reel player. In the video as well.
I hope that helps! Good luck and please remember to subscribe if you have not already!
