Well, I was kinda surprised when you said that the Prince biscuits are the German Oreo cause they are obviously the French Oreo. So I looked up and turned out they are the Belgian Oreo. (the other surprise was when Ethan said that Kinder eggs were German. The name sounds German but the thing is Italian)
Toffifee and Werther's Original are both fairly popular and widely available in the United States, though for the American market they renamed Toffifee to Toffifay to better reflect American English phonetics. You can easily find both in any American supermarket.
Just for the record: The original Spezi is done by Riegele, a local brewery in Augsburg, Bavaria. Decades ago they did the (from a current perspective) dumb move to give Paulaner the license to make Spezi without paying any fees and as Paulaner is the much bigger and more known brewery a lot of people think Paulaner is the inventor of Spezi.
And Coke-Orange Lemonade mix is sold by other brands too. Mezzo Mix => Coca Cola Company Schwip Schwap => PepsiCo Inc. Spezi => Riegle Brauerei Paulaner Spezi => Paulaner Brauerei Vita Cola Mix => Thüringer Waldquell Mineralbrunnen GmbH Those are the most popular/known ones.
The German Grandma Candy experience was spot on. I'm glad Ethan got the full German Grandma experience... Only the empty cookie box filled with money or random stuff was missing for the 100% experience.
This was the best german snack tasting I've even seen on UA-cam. No screaming, judging or panicking, just trying new stuff. I also like how Ethan really analyses the tastes.
The sweets at 10:08 are called "Eiskonfekt" for a reason...you're supposed to put them in the fridge or even the freezer and eat them cold, they get way better then!
Actually they are called like that because they feel cold without refrigerating them, which is because of the low melting point of the coconut fat. The same applies to "Kalter Hund".
@@TheSwedishRider I don't know exactly about the Eiskonfekt, but my grandparents always had this in the fridge. Kalter Hund is meant to be served cold and needs to be refrigerated when making it for the cocoa filling to solidify.
@@TheSwedishRider I personally know both of them only served cold and I think both names make sense when they are used for cold foods. That's how I remember eating them aa a kid, mostly with my grandparents.
I met Americans and offered them Mett (raw pork) and they looked at me like I offered them a prick of plutonium or some. Guess who ate 4 portions after they tried it😂👌 Btw 5 days isn't quite right, it's only allowed to sell the day it's made.
It's a toss up as to why Americans are suspicious of raw pork, it could be related to historic European based cultural food taboos, but for my mom's family, a mix of Native American tribes of the Gulf Coast, swine was considered flat out alien... Except for that one great uncle who decided to raise them to sell. Pigs are old world animals, so that makes sense. Dad's side eats pork though. My mom's silent protest to his demand to cook pork chops was to render them into charcoal.
It's due to parasites such as Trichinella. Uncooked pork usually has this type of worm. There are many instances where people who eat under cooked pork get parasite that will travel to their brain and eat holes through it. So yeah enjoy it ;-)
@@geneard639Nah they problem for americans is they're actually teached that raw pork is dangerous, while in reality it's the american food healthy system that is the problem! And you should never eat mass produced raw pork in the USA, it's nearly always contaminated with worms and others things that must be killed of by cooking it. Only in countries like Germany with their extreme food safety regulations it's save to eat raw pork from the supermarket!
Mozart Kugeln! I'm from the US, and when I was a kid (~10) my mother would bring back Mozart Kugeln whenever she went to Vienna on a business trip (which was about 10x/year). They came in these metal tins and were fantastic.
This gets me a little nostalgic. After moving to another country, my grandmother in Germany always sent us packages from Germany with typical German snacks. When I started studying and got packages sent directly to me, hanuta, baumkuchen and (slightly embarrassing) curry king were absolute life savers, especially after a few beers or when pulling all nighters.

Da fehlt die gemischte Tüte ausm Kiosk für 10 cent pro stück when you went home after primary school with your friends you went to the kiosk and they had these stacked bright red boxes with different candy in them and each piece was 10ct and you ate them all together before going home, eating something small, packing a peach ice tea and heading to the football pitch with metal goals
Fun fact: Spezi is actually a brand name so there's really only the original Spezi and the Paulaner Spezi shown in the clip (which is different, apparently Paulaner bought the rights to make their own Spezi from the original creator of the brand way back in the 60s or smth) with all the other versions being called "Cola Mix" or something like that.
Bonus fact: It is a brand name that you can actually buy a license to. Most companies don't want to pay that. So they call their drink Cola Mix or something. Paulaner is special though, because they bought a perpetual license before the whole brand was well established (so before there were yearly fees). The founder/brand company is officially still kinda mad about that.
@@PoppyGaming43 Bc as I said, Paulaner bought the rights to make their own Spezi all the way back in the 60s or 70s for a really small sum (I think around 10.000 marks back in the day), and now Paulaner makes millions every year selling that drink, and the original Spezi brand want some of that cash, so they tried to argue that a) they could cancel the deal they made back then and b) that Paulaner today isn't entitled to the same deal that Paulaner back then made (since the company changed and reformed at some point in the 80s or so) Both arguments were rather flimsy even from a laymans point of view, so it wasn't a huge surprise that the court ruled against them.
OK, those were indeed classic German snacks and I agree that the majority aren't super nice, but now I'm curious to know what snacks Ethan would ever rate above an 8?! He's a harsh critic. :D
I suppose that anyone coming from outside a culture and sampling its snacks would be a harsher critic without the nostalgia factored in. speaking very broadly, of course
Earlier today, my girlfriend and I watched ProZD rate a bunch of Campbell Soups, and we both thought of how... to an American, these are flavors and tastes that carry cultural and personal significance. Many Americans watching probably had some, wrapped up in a blanket battling a bad cold when they were 9, watching cartoons or something. But I would _never_ try it, because it would just be canned soup. Same with most of these snacks. Barring some, they're just... candy or softdrinks or salty fried snacks. You can get those anywhere. And Ethan has his own collection of shitty snacks he grew up with that Andong just wouldn't get.
I am turkish, born and raised in germany. I think we had the best Childhood here in germany the 2000s. Coming home from school, buying Center Shock gums for 5 cent each at that time, then arriving at home and instantly turn the TV on to watch our favorite Anime Shows on RTL2/ My Pokito TV. Or buying a big Döner for 2.50€. I really miss those times. These were the best times man.
I am from Austria and those Mozart Kugeln were mot the original ones from Mirabell. The real ones do not have alcohol inside and usually there is no one who don‘t like them.
Before avocado became really popular and available the best pair for Kräutersalz definitely was just tomatoes. Or even dark pumpernickel like bread with butter, Kräutersalz and tomatoes on top. SO GOOD. always had this at my grandmas
I'm from the Midwest and visited Magdeburg for Christmas. The Milka and Ritter Sport bars are leagues above American chocolate. I also loved Knoppers Erdnussriegel and Halloren Kugeln.
The Milka Chocolate 🍫 is actually not from Germany 🇩🇪, but The Milka Chocolate 🍫 is actually and original from Switzerland 🇨🇭, by the way my friend 😁😁😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I just got so mad at them opening the "Prinzenrolle" from the top! I know it's the usual way, but they got such great and innovative opening on the side
8:09 A traditionally made barrel brew consists of water, malt extract, sugar and various flavorings. Fassbrause is often associated with lemonade, as it usually does not contain beer.
As a German there are two mistakes: You got the wrong Mozartkugeln. The Mirabell ones are much better, but you only get them in Austria and there are also Mozarttaler which have a way better ratio of filings. And second: I would never NEVER eat Mett with butter!
@@TheInari1 Totally agree on the Mozartkugeln! If you're feeling really decadent, get the real real ones - the handmade ones at Café-Konditorei Fürst in Salzburg. Those are heavenly.
Mett with butter is awesome. Onions are more important, though.^^ I also had the impression they didn't use any spices here, but Mett is always spiced. Mett without spices is Hack. IMO Thüringer Mett (spiced with salt, pepper and nutmeg mostly) is the most amazing Mett you can eat on a bun.
We have those kiss things in Finland too, and here before 2001 they were branded as n-word kisses. I think it being called that is one of those classic old person hills to die on, alongside the (now removed) airforce swastika logo.
Where i'm from in germany we didn't call them n-word kisses, but "moor heads" which is not much better and along with "gipsy sauce" it is exactly one of these hills german boomers are willing to die on
Russisch Brot is supposedly named so because the baker who introduced it in Germany in the 19th century, one Friedrich Wilhem Hanke of Dresden, claimed to have encountered the recipe in St Petersburg when he was a baker's apprentice there. Allegedly, the original idea came from a teacher who used it to familiarize his pupils, who already knew Cyrillic script, with Latin script. A different hypothesis has been postulated by Bahlsen bakery, who have been making Russisch Brot since 1904: The "Russisch" does not actually refer to the Russian country/language/people, but is a bastardisation of the word "rösch", a local term for "crispy" or "crunchy".
5:25 didn’t knew Ferrero was popular in Germany for anything else than Nutella! Here in Italy is called “Fetta al latte”, milk slice, a favorite of mine since childhood... years later I can still eat 10 of those in a day and wanting more!
Ferrero it’s all over the world and they owned over 100 different products all form Kinder and other companies in The United States of America and other places in Europe And other places around the world yes just different companies from different countries around the world 🌎🌍🌏 🗺 , by the way my friends 😁😁😁😁😃😃👍🏻👍🏻
Mett-Brötchen is the best hangover breakfast you can get, in my opinion. When I have a really bad hangover I don't feel like eating anything. Then I kinda force myself to eat Mett-Brötchen and after a few bites, the hunger comes back and I probably eat 4 or 5 breadrolls.
My daughter loves milchschnitte. I have brought it back for her a few times. She took it to school and ate it for a snack. School was out at 1 so she ate lunch at home.
The Kinder Milchschnitte ( The Kinder Milk Slices ) 🍫🥛🍯 is actually not from Germany 🇩🇪 at all, but The Kinder Milchschnitte ( The Kinder Milk Slices ) 🍫🥛🍯 is actually original from Italy 🇮🇹, Alba, Italy 🇮🇹, by the way my friend 😊😊😊🎉🎉😊😎😁😃🤜🏻🤛🏻👍🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🍫🥛🍯🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊😊😊😊
Whats with parents always giving young children blocks of sugar? I am german and got lots of that stuff aswell from my irresponsible parents. Result: had to wear braces for years who straightup told me when I got older its only because of sugar and lack of vitamins at the jaw orthopedia
But important fact to bear in mind: German Fanta is much tangier, less sweet-tasting than most Fantas in the world. It tastes closer to sparkling orange juice than anywhere, I've tried, in the world. USA, South America, Eastern Europe - it tastes like liquified orange candy. Also it is much paler.
Re: Mate (15:00) - funnily enough, Club Mate has been around as "Sekt Bronte" since 1898; and their slogan literally is "Man gewöhnt sich dran" translating to "you get used to it"
10:05 - He simply ignores the "main thing" about Eis-Konfekt (where "Eis" means "ice"). The low melting point (based on palm fat, its main ingredient) gives the sensation that the chocolate melts in your mouth while make it feel getting cold! Therefore the "ice" in its name. They might have missed it bc this chocolates storage in the fridge is kinda mandatory.
There is a Classic from Frankfurt called "Handkäs' mit Musik", mainly Harzer Roller pickled with vinegar and diced onions, loads of kümmel. You eat it with good bread made from sourdough with a think layer of Butter and some Salt. Questions about the music? The music comes with digestion... The less kümmel, the more music. You're Welcome! (You serve ist with truckloads of "Äbbelwoi". Apfelwein, a superdry, vinegar-smelling cider from Frankfurt - it is the worst. Incredibly dry. I'd go for french cidre).
Yeah that is actually 100 % and true my friend and The Kinder Chocolate 🍫 is actually not even German at all that is actually original Italian from Italy 🇮🇹 😎😁😁
@@jonathanthomsen3111 just because a italian company created them does not mean they are a italian product... The German branch of Ferrero developed them especially for the German market catering to german tastes. And only later on they were sold in different countries as well, long after they had gotten popular in germany. So I'd still say those are orinal German snacks 😉
@Fabian Stiefel No Kinder is actually original Italian from Italy 🇮🇹, not German not from Germany 🇩🇪, The Kinder story began in 1968 in the centre of Alba - a beautiful small town in Northern Italy. Here, an original idea blossomed into the Kinder we know and love today. And PS this is not a German snack at all friend 🙂😎✌️👍🏻
That’s the Crossover I never knew I needed, but I absolutely did! Edit: The Dickmann Schokoküsse are okay but nothing compared to freshly made ones. There still are a few factories who make them with fresh meringue and those are amazing!
Dickmann’s are pretty bad, to be honest. They are made to be cheap and to keep for a long time. The whole marketing behind them is about their size ... But neither taste not consitency are really pleasant to eat. Viennese Niemetz has their "Schwedenbomben", which is of course still a mass produced product, but not as bad as Storck with a much better recipe and better ingredients. They are noticeably more expensive, but in terms of taste it is so much better than this Dickmann’s stuff. I tried a Dickmann’s twice in my life. That has been enough to make me never want to get close to these things again.
Just to set this straight: Reber Mozartkugeln are from Germany, the best known Austrian version is made by Mirabell (now owned by US company Mondelez 😱 and insolvent). Invented however by Konditorei Fürst in Salzburg. In Austria you will have a hard time finding the Reber version. But since Mozart himself as well as his birthplace Salzburg sometimes were German, sometimes Austrian … who cares? 🤷♂️
The Reber Version is produced in Bad Reichenhall. It’s liks 15 minutes away from Salzburg. In my opinion, the Reber is the best version followed by Fürst
By the way: Mate is from Argentinia, de Beukelaer from Belgium, Mozartkugeln are austrian, Maggi is a swiss company, Hanuta and Milchschnitte are made by Ferrero, an italian company. Nevertheless an amusing testing - more likely European advertising television.
Fassbrause currently is a mix of malt and fruit extracts, although the original version was apple juice and liquorice. Sometimes spices are added as well. Apparently the inventor of it (1908) was trying to make a non-alcoholic beer for his kids. Oh! I've had jelly bananas! I love them! (yes, I'm weird)
Hey Andong, a dish that I really liked when I grew up in germany was Milchreis (both by Müller company and selfmade). Could you make a video where you dive into the history a bit and then try to make it?
That's extremely easy: take a pot, pour some full-fat-milk (4:1 milk:rice ratio) in it, add the content of a vanillabean and some sugar to your liking, bring it to a boil, add round-grain rice (in Germany it is specifically sold as Milchreis, but pretty much any starchy round-grain type should do), take it off the heat, put a lid on and tightly wrap the pot in your bed blanket and put it into your bed for a couple of hours. Sprinkle some cinnamon-sugar onto it if you like it sweeter, otherwise it's great on its own, with fruit, applesauce, cooked cherries, etc.
@@hmvollbanane1259 I have never seen Milchreis in the bed. Maybe that's the traditional power efficient way. In general it's a simple dish. Cinnamon is a must to finish it on the plate.
Wut. That absolutely bonkers. Two of my favourite Foodtubers tasting germany snacks. There is nothing better Danke Andong. Das ist einfach viel zu geil!
okay I am shocked, the grandma candies: first of all I fuckin loveee these little chocolates you put on ginger bread houses they are the typical christmas candy and the last one they tried is „ice (cream) confect“ (not really actually ice cream). They're made with coconut butter hence the fast melting.. you're supposed to store them in the fridge and when eating them they're supposed to give the sensation of ice cream melting in your mouth 😅 hence the name „ice confect"🤷🏼♀️
Vita-Cola and nudossi are originally from east Germany. After they reunited there were discontinued but then Manny people missed it and wanted it back so it came back.
Actually, It would have been a good idea to ask him, which german snacks Ethan knows from home (and is able to get there) and buy the exact same ones. Turns out, our snacks like Tofiffe or Riesen are a lot less sugary/sweet than in the Americas.
This brought me back! I was an exchange student in high school, and I went back about 4 years ago. Spezi is delicious, but I usually bought Mezzo Mix(coca-cola's brand of the same mix). My all time favorite snack food? Erdnuss Flips! Best comparison I can make is if cheetos were dusted with peanut butter instead of cheese 😂
Fassbrause was invented by a chemist as a fake beer for his kid. It's malt and water with fruit juice, sugar and herbs. There is an American product called Apple Beer based on the original recipe. The fruit juice component can vary though, the most popular in Germany is the red cherry flavored one I think.
Haha. For the Mortiz chocolate, in Slovakia, my family used to call them "ice chocolate", because we kept them in the fridge only and ate them as cold as possible :D it had a very specific taste which I loved as a kid, but cannot get to like as adult :D
So great to see Ethan in Berlin! We need another collab you two. Also, Poland is right here, Ethan. I hope you visit soon and try pierogi at a mleczny bar or local donuts (paczki) ;) There truely is a lot of food content to be made travelling Europe
Personally I would wait til Easter for a visit to Poland. My Polish friend usually shows me a home feast that she would cook every year for the occasion, so I would be super curious about what the masses of Polish people do on the holiday, on a larger scale. I think that would be a very interesting food tour for everyone to see :D
The Fassbrause was in a plastic bottle. Usually its from the brew Company "Barre" or "Veltins". Most of the Times you have the Holunder which means elder or is made out of elderflowers.
Expected u put the Dickmanns between a Breadroll. Also the 5 Minuten Terrine with onions and croutons is way better imo than the meatball one . Great Video, Amazing vibe u guys have.
Mett is basically pork tartare, therefeore is great. It is also available in Poland, but you won't see on display in meat store, you need to ask for it. You can buy in supermarket processed onion mett (pol. metka cebulowa) in ~200g plastic casing.
I grew up in Germany and developed a taste for some of these things including the jelly bananas and chocolate rings. I'm living in the UK now but you can still get some things like the pombears and the princes, but certain other things like salted liquorice, all of the drinks and the milch-schnitte are pretty much impossible to get, and then the Super Dickmanns only turn up in Christmas markets and are crazy expensive for some reason. I also remember these paprika flavoured kangaroo snacks called Jumpys, I miss those, and I used to drink bananaweizen. It's like a weiss bier cocktail with banana juice. No idea how you juice a banana though :D
10:05 That is Eiskonfekt! You're supposed to eat it frozen. The are melty so at the low temperatures they are still soft enough to eat. They aren't great at room temp tho xD
You might wanna call those "German Oreo's" Belgian, because they were created by the famous (in Belgium anyway) Antwerp biscuiterie De Beukelaer in 1870, in honour of King Leopold II, who had to wait 30 years as a prince before actually becoming king, hence the French name of the cookies "Prince Fourré" (which translates into... "Stuffed Prince"). Every kid in Belgium grew up with these cookies.
Milchschnitte actually is Italian. It’s originally called “Fette al latte” witch literally translates into “Milchschnitte” and Ferrero just sells it by its German name in Germany

well, thank goodness for this video. I'm due to move back to Germany in like a month or so, after spending 20 years away - until now I had no idea that Super Dickmanns have lost their colloquial name. I mean it makes sense and it's certainly for the best, but I would not have known or suspected. And that could have made for an awfully awkward supermarket encounter.
Depends on where you are. In the bigger cities like Berlin definitely, however in the countryside they are still colloquial called Mohrenkopf or Negerkuss. after all Neger never had the same meaning as the N-word in English as the German equivalent to that is "Bimbo", guess it became unfashionable due to its similarity and hence use in translations of American movies and series but the word itself doesn't have anywhere near the same connotations to it and is still occasionally used in the countryside
I must admit, I was internally retching at the thought of half 'n' half Coke/Fanta at first, but I just gave it a try today and it's actually really nice. 👍🍹
You do know that Coke contains citrus flavourings, right? So, Fanta and coke are brother and sister. But, if I had to choose between the two, Fanta is my homie esp lemon, fruit burst, and grape Fanta.
In restaurants its always served with a slice of lemon stuck on the top of the glass, which actually still adds a nice touch to the flavor, as there is always a teeny tiny layer of lemon juice on top.
13:40 According to the company, Russian bread is derived from “Rösches Brod” (rösch = crispy; Brod = sweet baked goods). The term “Russian bread” is therefore based on a folk etymological reinterpretation.
all Kinder products were invnted in Italy and they're actually from Ferrero and Ferrero is actually also from Italy, so please if you don't believe it, search it.
Jelly bananas are one of my favourite sweets! Love them so much. How are they "granny"? And how can one dislike them? I mean: People eat Jaffa Cakes which are basically jelly oranges!
The Prinzen Rolle Chocolate Crackers Biscuits Cookies 🍫🍪 from by Griesson - de Beukelaer by De Beukelaer is actually original from Belgium 🇧🇪🍟🧇🍫, but not from Germany 🇩🇪🦅 at all, by the way my friend 😉😊😊😁😁😃😃😎😎🤜🏻🤛🏻👍🏻🤘🏻🍫🍫🍪🍪🍫🍫🇧🇪🇧🇪🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻😊😊😊
But there are also good “jelly” bananas. It's not jelly, but more like banana pulp. They are called "casali chocolate bananas" and they are really good.
Harzer is made of the whey after making cheese. In former times it used to be a poor man's food, nowadays it is annoyingly expensive. The Harzer cheese in the video wasn't ripe yet. It is ripe when everything white has turned yellowish and glassy like the outside part. You have to marinate it in vinegar and oil and lots of chopped onion, that's called "Handkäse mit Musik". I love it, but I'm the only one I know who loves it.
Oh my fucking god I was so hoping this collab would happen - my two favorite youtube chefs! So glad you guys got to get together - it really seems like you're cut from the same cloth, at least as far as cooking goes. Both very creative and technique-focused dudes. Hope to see some cooking stuff with you both too! But if not - still fun to see you guys together - and get a peak into some German snacks! Was much more fun and interesting than I anticipated, actually - usually not hugely into "we taste xyz" style videos. Great selection of foods on your part.
Awesome collab! 👌 Regarding Kräutersalz/herbed salt: the one from the Rewe Bio brand is way better in my book, it has Bockshornklee/Fenugreek in it (for even more Umami) and is less salty.
13:32 This has nothing to do with Russia. The name comes from "rössisch brot" or something similar which was mideaval-German and means "geröstetes Brot" (= roasted bread). This is just the sweet and modern snack version. The name was kept over the centuries but somehow, somewhere went from rössisch to russisch
We're halfway through and I have to say - nice selection so far. Srue, "Mozartkugeln" are mostly from Austria, but Reber is a german company located in Bad Reichenhall (the same city the salt is from) at the border to Salzburg, Austria. But I noticed an austrian item in the thumbnail - Almdudler is an austrian lemonade...
Yes!! It has to be eaten at or after expiration date when it's all ripe and ready, and best marinated in a vinaigrette with diced onions. Absolutely delicious!!
At least here down south, Mett is seasoned with caraway powder, salt, pepper and garlic powder, which does give it a fairly distinct taste (mostly due to the caraway). But overall good selection of fairly representative snacks! One note though: Spezi is not 50% Fanta, 50% Cola. It's 50% Cola and 50% Orange Soda. It will taste VASTLY better if you use some sort of (good quality) orange soda instead of Fanta. Fanta just doesn't really taste like orange in my opinion.
I've made a russian honey cake once, called Medovik, after a recipe by chef John. It's a layer cake that contains a lot of "burnt" honey in the batter, very rich, complex, slightly bittersweet flavour. Originally, there's supposed to be a frosting of sour cream and condensed milk, but in this recipe it was mostly whipped cream. After keeping it in the fridge for one night, what resulted to my surprise was something that tasted very much like Milchschnitte! I've been wondering ever since if that's what it's based on, since they advertise on the packaging that Milchschnitte contains honey... Also, I love Gelee Bananen, and I don't really get why people hate them haha! There are versions based on other fruit as well, like Gelee Ananas (Pineapple) which I also like (but imagine people hate as well?)
3:29 But it's confusing! For example, my mother once bought soda according to her opinion and it was with alcohol, also from a beer company that she didn't recognize as such, even though the shape of the bottle suggested it! 🤣 But there is also soda in beer bottles, for example (grenades), only in clear bottles, no brown ones!

Well, I was kinda surprised when you said that the Prince biscuits are the German Oreo cause they are obviously the French Oreo. So I looked up and turned out they are the Belgian Oreo.

Harzerkäse or Handkäse needs to be prepared right...

Lmao so dumb

The sweets at 10:08 are called "Eiskonfekt" for a reason...you're supposed to put them in the fridge or even the freezer and eat them cold, they get way better then!
Actually they are called like that because they feel cold without refrigerating them, which is because of the low melting point of the coconut fat. The same applies to "Kalter Hund".
@@TheSwedishRider I don't know exactly about the Eiskonfekt, but my grandparents always had this in the fridge.
Kalter Hund is meant to be served cold and needs to be refrigerated when making it for the cocoa filling to solidify.

I met Americans and offered them Mett (raw pork) and they looked at me like I offered them a prick of plutonium or some. Guess who ate 4 portions after they tried it😂👌
Btw 5 days isn't quite right, it's only allowed to sell the day it's made.

Bonus fact:
It is a brand name that you can actually buy a license to. Most companies don't want to pay that. So they call their drink Cola Mix or something. Paulaner is special though, because they bought a perpetual license before the whole brand was well established (so before there were yearly fees). The founder/brand company is officially still kinda mad about that.
Coca-Cola's is mezzo mix
then how did spezi try to sue paulaner because of the name?
@@PoppyGaming43 Bc as I said, Paulaner bought the rights to make their own Spezi all the way back in the 60s or 70s for a really small sum (I think around 10.000 marks back in the day), and now Paulaner makes millions every year selling that drink, and the original Spezi brand want some of that cash, so they tried to argue that a) they could cancel the deal they made back then and b) that Paulaner today isn't entitled to the same deal that Paulaner back then made (since the company changed and reformed at some point in the 80s or so)
Both arguments were rather flimsy even from a laymans point of view, so it wasn't a huge surprise that the court ruled against them.

A different hypothesis has been postulated by Bahlsen bakery, who have been making Russisch Brot since 1904: The "Russisch" does not actually refer to the Russian country/language/people, but is a bastardisation of the word "rösch", a local term for "crispy" or "crunchy".

ive neverf heard of this, and im german lol
Also a Childhood classic: Super Dickmann's inside a plain Breadroll. Popular at sports festivals like swimming competitions.
I think its more a north-german/denmark thing
Germany and Austrai are same same but different anyway
By the way: Mate is from Argentinia, de Beukelaer from Belgium, Mozartkugeln are austrian, Maggi is a swiss company, Hanuta and Milchschnitte are made by Ferrero, an italian company. Nevertheless an amusing testing - more likely European advertising television.
The Grandma-Chocolate with low melting point is ice confectionary (or like Wikipedia calls it "Ischoklad") it needs to be frozen!
Fassbrause currently is a mix of malt and fruit extracts, although the original version was apple juice and liquorice. Sometimes spices are added as well. Hey Andong,
a dish that I really liked when I grew up in germany was Milchreis (both by Müller company and selfmade).
Could you make a video where you dive into the history a bit and then try to make it?
You need a certain sort of rice, and you cook it in milk

Fassbrause was invented by a chemist as a fake beer for his kid. It's malt and water with fruit juice, sugar and herbs. There is an American product called Apple Beer based on the original recipe. The fruit juice component can vary though, the most popular in Germany is the red cherry flavored one I think.
I am on Burgigeld so I am watching Americans eating our German snacks in the middle of the day. Life is good.

Have you tried looking for milch schnitte in polish shops? They are pretty popular in Poland too, worth trying
I feel you on the Jelly bananas. Not all brands are great but man do I love some of them.
You don't juice a banana, you just mix it with some liquid. :D
You didn't try it in the video but the 7 days Bake Rolls is a greek brand of snacks. It's great!
I was surprised to find it at a german supermarket.
I know the melty chocolate by the name "Eiskonfekt", i.e. you're supposed to refrigerate them before eating ;-)
fassbrause is 25% alhocol free beer and 75% some kind of lemonade.
Grew up with them in the UK too :D
i grew up with them in NL as well!
Same here in France 😂
Same in luxemburg
Even Maggi potatoes are not German but Swiss, not to mention the Kinder milchschnitte that are Italian.
Milchschnitte actually is Italian. It’s originally called “Fette al latte” witch literally translates into “Milchschnitte” and Ferrero just sells it by its German name in Germany
Must by the shittiest italien sweet ever then. Did they want to get rid of it and therefore gave it to the germans?
The Kinder Milchschnitte ( The Kinder Milk Slices ) is actually not from Germany 🇩🇪🦅 at all, but The Kinder Milchschnitte ( The Kinder Milk Slices ) is actually original from Italy 🇮🇹, Alba, Italy 🇮🇹🍕🍝, by the way my friend 😊😊😊😎😁😁😁🤜🏻🤛🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻😊😊😎😎😎🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻🍫🍫🍫🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
3:32 Its not Cola and Fanta. Its like mezzo mix wich is also german but belongs to the Cloa company so its like Schwip Schwap.... Wait its also german so its all the same but different names so its not 50:50 with cola and Fanta anymore but if you want to do it at home than yes it is but its way more expensive than a normal spezi. More than 3 of them
Spezi, Mate and Fassbrause, but no Malztrunk. Anyhow, german cuisine has A LOT more to offer. Hope you give it another shot.
There is a version of Hanuta with darker chocolate, so they've got you covered :P
The Hanuta 🥛🍫🌰🥜🍯🎋🌺🧂🍪🧇🥪 by Ferrero - The Very Much World Famous Italian Family Chocolate Company Ferrero 🇮🇹🍫🏭 is actually original from Italy 🇮🇹🦅, Alba, Piemonte, Italy 🇮🇹🦅 and The Kinder Brand 🍫 by Ferrero from Italy 🇮🇹🦅, Alba, Piemonte, Italy 🇮🇹🦅 since 1968, but not from Germany 🇩🇪🦅 at all, by the way my friend 😉😁😄😃😀😃😊😊😎😎🤜🏻🤛🏻👍🏻🤘🏻🍫🍫🏭🇮🇹🇮🇹🦅🦅🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
well, thank goodness for this video.
In restaurants its always served with a slice of lemon stuck on the top of the glass, which actually still adds a nice touch to the flavor, as there is always a teeny tiny layer of lemon juice on top.
was ? in was für restaurants bestellst du denn deine spezi ? hatte noch nie ne winzig dünne schicht orangen saft obfn drauf... o.o
Yes from Alba, Italy 🇮🇹 since 1968 my friend 😉😊😎🤜🏻🤛🏻👍🏻🤘🏻🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Jelly bananas are one of my favourite sweets! Love them so much. How are they "granny"? And how can one dislike them? I mean: People eat Jaffa Cakes which are basically jelly oranges!
Who the fuck likes jaffa cakes?
Jaffa cakes are the worst cakes🥶
@@tulip811 They were my favourites as a child :)
Jaffa cakes are good! Or orangettes, just the orange jelly enrobed with chocolate. Artisanal orangettes are with crystallised orange zest, I believe.
Just accept your old age ;-D
Prinzenrolle... not too sweet?!? Did they change the recipe at some point?
As a kid I kinda liked it but I always found it quite a bit too sweet.
The “Moritz” needs to go in the fridge for a bit, then it’s really good!! Try it guys ;)
Now I’m hungry for some German snacks 🍫🍬🍪🥮🌭
Oh my fucking god I was so hoping this collab would happen - my two favorite youtube chefs! So glad you guys got to get together - it really seems like you're cut from the same cloth, at least as far as cooking goes. Both very creative and technique-focused dudes. Hope to see some cooking stuff with you both too! But if not - still fun to see you guys together - and get a peak into some German snacks! Was much more fun and interesting than I anticipated, actually - usually not hugely into "we taste xyz" style videos. Great selection of foods on your part.
Awesome collab! 👌
Regarding Kräutersalz/herbed salt: the one from the Rewe Bio brand is way better in my book, it has Bockshornklee/Fenugreek in it (for even more Umami) and is less salty.
I like jelly bananas :(
BTW, the better alternative to Mozarts balls (and actually German): Hallorenkugeln from Halle!
Now giving Ethan unripe Harzerkäse on its own is just cruel! Also misrepresentative of how Harzer is supposed to be enjoyed properly.
That!
Not raw port, but raw beef with onions (called beef tatar). Sometimes even with anchovis.
You literally showed everything I hated about my childhood in the 80s 😂😂😂
NRW Curry Wurst > Berlin Curry wurst.
I don’t see any Knoppers in the thumbnail?!
Sir, I’m refusing to watch this video!
It was not 9.30 therefore it was illegal to eat Knoppers
3:29 But it's confusing! For example, my mother once bought soda according to her opinion and it was with alcohol, also from a beer company that she didn't recognize as such, even though the shape of the bottle suggested it! 🤣
But there is also soda in beer bottles, for example (grenades), only in clear bottles, no brown ones!
Fassbrause is basically sparkling apple juice and malt extract as far as I know.
