Thanks for the guides, great content as always!
I'm curious about more Multiclass info now that we know more changes that Larian made vs 5e. For instance, even one level in Wizard lets you scribe any spell you have a SLOT for, not based on Wiz level. This means a completely non-viable build for 5e (like 11Sorc 1 Wiz or 10Sorc 2Wiz) is actually potentially very viable in BG3.
I'd love to see more build content exploring more niche stuff like that!

Positioning your party to set up devastating ambushes by ungrouping your party before initiating combat can be so helpful with encounters that allow you to do so. I practiced by reloading the temple encounter just outside the nautilus crash over and over again until I could beat that encounter in 3 turns and it helped me understand the systems so much better that encounters now feel like fun puzzles rather than a punishing slog.

Great video! Helped a lot. During the goblin castle encounter, when your main character is separated and alone with the goblin priest, I chose dialogue options which led to a fight. I lock picked the door with my outside characters and led them inside the room. I had my characters jump onto the upper platform and out of reach of the multitude of enemies. Then, I noticed I could see an adjacent room full of flammable barrels. So, I waited patiently until several enemies barged into that room in order to reach me and attack. I then used fireball and blew up the entire room killing most of them and using line of sight and character movements while having this high ground to avoid getting hit while maintaining advantage on my hits. I did this before I really understood combat but knew that in this game you should always seek to use your environment to your advantage. Really fun encounter and very rewarding game! Never played DnD myself.

This is actually a really good video for getting the basics ingrained in new players! Very important to make sure you have Advantage as much as possible, it makes you roll a crit twice as often, and makes your chance of a 16-20 nearly 44%. Disadvantage does the opposite, making you roll the bottom half of the dice 75% of the time!

    • @SaturninePlaces

I don't understand how a game about role-playing ended up at this level of math required to do something as simple as "hit your target". They could really simplify the whole accuracy/attack roll/saving throw/ability check/armor/proficiency/ability score modifier system a LOT if they wanted the game to be about playing pretend, but instead we need calculus to contemplate which upgrade to choose. Like, why tf can we even pick odd-numbered ability scores if they don't get used for calculations anywhere in the game?

    • @nitewing7442
      @nitewing7442 Рік тому +2

@@SaturninePlaces I understand your confusion for why DnD seems to be overly complicated in the calculations department. The only REAL answer to that is something you would know ONLY if you were around when it was created or researched the background of the creators. DnD was created by nerds. Complete, total, statistic loving, creative nerds that wanted a game that required imagination to play, yet still offered something for the intellectual. Believe it or not, the game HAS been simplified in many ways over the years. It has increased in scope, content, diversity, and popularity, but the core mechanics have been, for the most part, streamlined. Learning to play is easier than it used to be, but the amount of Lore and Content has increased a hundred times. Keep at it. You'll get it. Once you get a handle on the core concepts (reading some of the PHB - Players Handbook and the DMG - Dungeon Masters Guide could help), the rest is literally just story and, well, Role Playing.

As far as gaining advantage, you can put your group into turn-based before combat to get in close as well and ungroup them to position them individually before combat. This is really important in some preset battles and you get some heads up when getting close because you can usually hear them talking or get a message like 'there seems to be some commotion ahead' or somesuch. That should be your cue to look ahead and see how the terrain is and make a rough plan on how to approach. If there is high ground, approach from that direction if possible, if you blunder in through a gully or valley chokepoint, don't cry when you find yourself surrounded.

Grease is an amazing way to get enemies prone. U can use grease through spells and grease specific bottles. Add in any form of fire and you make a bomb that can possibly knock over multiple enemies. Additionally, hitting any explosive material (grease, gunpowder, poison gas) with an open flame (torch, fireplace) creates a similar effect. Making sure u use ur actions to do as much as possible is key. This could look like saving an area of effect spell for when a group of enemies gather around a summon you had initiate combat or using party members who share initiative to create a grease bomb on enemies.

  • @dannyp9210
    @dannyp9210 Рік тому +5

    TLDR:
*Have at least 16 in your main stat (Ability) that powers your attacks, which gives a +3 modifier
*Do not wear armor and weapons you're not proficient in (be sure to get the +2 modifier from Proficiency)
*Get better and more unique weapons throughout the game that by themselves grant a +1 bonus/enchanted modifier and so on
*For attacks that do Attack Rolls, try to attack from Stealth/Hidden and Elevated positions, and try to attack enemies that are Prone or otherwise Incapacitated; these give bonuses to your Attack Rolls
*For attacks that require Saving Throws (usually Spells) from the defender, try to debuff the defender in the corresponding stat (Wis, Cha, Dex etc.) so he gets penalties to his Saving Throw, making it less likely he will resist the attack/spell effect (remember that the defender tries to overcome the incoming Spell's Difficulty Class)
*Use Bless (and other buffs) that grants bonus to your Attack Rolls
*In order to defend yourself, use debuffs (e.g. Bane) that gives penalties to enemies' Attack Rolls, which lowers their chance to hit you. Conversely, buffing your AC (Armor Class) will also make it harder for enemies to succeed in their Attack Rolls. And having a high Ability/Stat Score (can also be from buffs or items) can make it easier to Save Throw (resist) spells related to that Ability/Stat.
*Remember to check if there is a Bonus Action that should be done before the Action, like knocking the target Prone first, and then following that up with the Main Attack
*Try to get your melees close to the enemies' ranged, and keep your ranged away from enemy melee. Ranged combatans will have a Disadvantage penalty to their Attack Rolls if a melee is close to their face, and running away from such a melee will punish you with an Opportunity Attack (of the type "Reaction"), unless you've used 'Disengage' or something similar.
*Try to use CC Spells to deny enemies their turn, so they're unable to do anything. Then you can Focus Fire on the non-CC'ed opponents and strategically wipe out your enemies one by one.
    Other:
    - Make use of the environment; using a Fire Bolt on an explosive barrel can knock out several opponents at once, and Shoving an opponent off a ledge can sometimes be sufficient
    - Dip your weapon in Candles, Torches, Poisonous surface etc. before your ambush starts to get in a little extra damage
    - Go into Turn Based Mode (Ctrl + Spacebar) to easier setup ambushes and avoid enemy Line of SIght. Also use "G" to split the group and move members separately to have them enter the encounter on their own term (by stealth attacking for example)

One of my favorite parts of the game is the AI for the enemies, even on balanced tier of difficulty. When you put an enemy to sleep and his friend will spend a bonus to shove him to wake him up, they will use the potions and poisons they have, the will dip weapons for the damage bonus, they set traps and actually use them. It really adds a level of thinking to the game that you do not see too often, which is refreshing. Also, I am only a few days into playing it and haven't even settled on a main toon yet. The ONLY issue I have had with the game is I wish the party total was 5 instead of 4. I have a really hard time narrowing down to a party of 4, and my parties often end up just looking the same, or I have to exclude someone I really want to use because I need to have the slots used for specific roles.

A few extra points. Keep an eye out for environmental opportunities. Some barrels explode when attacked, others contain flammable liquids. A good example of this is when you fight the tomb robbers inside the ancient temple by the beach. Outside, you can kill 2 of the robbers by shooting the pulley system that drops a weight on them AND opens another entrance to the temple. You csn see the pulley at 7:52.
Shoving enemies off high ground is hilarious. It can often one shot a mob. You can even pick up and throw smaller enemies. Or throw an exploding barrel, from above is best.

6:31 Bless is a great spell that isn't just for the early game. Because combat difficulty tends to scale kind of linearly at higher levels, the +1d4 from Bless remains relevant even at higher levels. The only reason you would NOT want to use Bless at higher levels is if you had stronger spells which required Concentration, and even then it's still a good backup for when you've already burned through your higher-level spell slots.

No, the game isn't that complex, trust me. I do't know, maybe it's your first non final fantasy ACTUAL RPG. I must stress this, as Diablo itself is most defnitely not an 'ARGP' and yet, spentless hours are ended trying to sort out useless builds in terms of the top beat'em all that it ACTUALLY is.
Also you're lucky y'all dealing with a revised 5th edition ruleset for this game. Or else you'd be dead trying right now if you think BG3 is a very complex game (first d&d with build a reset option I have ever yet to seen, also. But that's only me two cents, here.) YOUR gamerz opinion about game's accessibilty is important, not mine. For I'm only an old school d&d fan, nothing more. Still, extremely happy with what the game turned out to be, don't get me wrong.
Oh, looketh! The golden age of "hit mouse button to strike better all-time skyrim best RPG like do-it-yourself for better gaming grifty Baldur's Gate videos on youtube" is here! Though how many of youz took a chance to look into the actual d&d rules? None. All busy cmplaining straight out of star wars sort of mind settings, those 'Dragon Age Origin is ancient game' kinda fans... Yeah, I know. I had to let it all out, that's all. Phil Collins kind of 'That's All', yeah. Only this time with me beloved games, as opposed to waves of Dice Battlefield dumdown and the like. Hence the Venting. Britanny style. Please don't take it personally, she's the one with natural dual-wield Ranger/Cleric b👀bs, not me.
Also, yeah, fantastic video, as you said. Good thing, as far as the age of game annual read-outs is concerned : BG3 looks like it's faring in good position, second ONLY to Starfield incoming HUGE success, according to deluded Bioware fans for at the bottom of the list 57.5% of them. Yeah, I've been counting Bellular News/YongYea incremental channel growths, as of late, respectively's peaking. That's how I know all those 'useless' things to know: I read the manual (though I was 12 years old when I did that, while playing Ultima VII with the other hand, hence the right-click to move in this alleged and airy game that pretty much fathered all D&D gameplay implementation styles since even before Mario Bros was born)
Dude, what I'm saying here is, you're not complaining if you think this game is complex. It's a breeze in fact.Maybe a little too much. But for excellent reasons. Hence me liking your post anyway. Complex is OK if you love the game, I'm in to say as a wood-elf Bard killing it with Astarion ALONE. Me? I'm playing Spy who gloved' me Baldur's Gate. What about you? Don't tell me you're playing at "looking for best build video Baldur's gate for millions worth of crit. Please. Now get back at enjoying the game, you madmelad. Haven’t seen mentioned yet is Faerie Fire that some classes/race has access to, and you can find it on some weapons too. It gives AOE advantage when used on a group of enemies. Very handy to get a head start in the fight.
Another point is time your attacks smartly. Say your ranger used Flourish and got an enemy off balance. If your next party member is a cleric, then don’t hit the off balance enemy. Save that for the rogue who can make use of Sneak Attack to deal extra damage.
Finally, use your summons to distract enemies and draw their attention. Summoned weapons from cleric are great because they can take a few hits before disappearing. They end up soaking damage for your party.

Also, some situations require odd solutions. In the underdark, you might run across a giant eye that will charm drow to help it. The best way to defeat the giant eye is to release the Drow so they can aid you in the attack.

unless they are charmed by the Beholder and you get more enemies against you.... and, even though they are your allies for a moment, i wouldnt release them... they are drows after all.

I'm 14 hours into my first playthrough and I have been doing it all wrong. Not sure exactly how I made it as far as I have (just got to Baldur's Gate in Act 3) but now I feel I should start over and do it right lol. Thanks for this guide!

The beauty of it is that you can do things any number of ways. I’m going to apply some of these things. Grease + fire is an awesome combo.
