I know the shop life is very busy but thank you all the work you do and stream of videos you have been putting out.
Maybe 7 or so years from now, the owner of another Sienna van will need this center roller hinge, but new ones will be unobtanium, and Wilbert's U-Pull It of Bath will have this one in inventory. And the bolts will have a chance of coming off without breaking, thanks to your diligence and Fluid Film (insert sheep's "baah" sound here).
I've always appreciated Eric O.'s ounce of prevention ethos with the Fluid Film -- he doesn't have to do that, but he does it anyway. Heart of gold.
Love the amount of videos you’re putting out currently. Thanks!
Money in the bank.
I work at a Yota dealer. If you roll down the sliding door window it takes a lot of the awkwardness away of removing/installing the hinge
This, this right here is the kind of thing I come to the comment section for :) Obvious is hindsight but you never think of it in the moment.
what can be done to prevent this problem more lubricant? what would be a good lubricant for mechanism?
Watching your videos makes me glad I retied and sold my shop....then went fishing.
Thank you for the Mrs O update. And Pumpkin too.
Thank you Eric for showcasing "" Luna "", the little darling !!!! And she was very talkative and lots of rubbing !!!! It just melts my heart how lovable these kitties are, and all they do for you - guard cat, alarm clock, #1 mouser, and they always have good things to say when they see you !!!!! That was a delicate job removing and installing that sliding hinge, disaster is waiting for that one careless moment you aren't paying attention !!!! I saw that oven masterpiece Mrs. O. was making for you and the kids - such a loving wife and mom !!!! The hinge install was flawless, paint it ?? No, you fluid filmed it. Painting is just cosmetic, not a show stopper. As you said, the van will be worn out and the unpainted hinge will still be indestructible !!!!! I put new high quality shocks on my truck. My wife asked why I was clear coating them since they were factory painted. I explained that the clear coating - 2 coats - was to make them still look like new 5 years from now, and not all rusted from rock dings !!! She didn't understand - it's a man thing !!!!! Women get their nails painted exotic colors AND then clear coat them - same principle. 😀😛👍
i started a mobile repair business 2 years ago and you sir are who i strive to be you are a great mechanic and a great mentor
Your wife looked so proud of you as you signed off. Lovely people. Thanks.
Mrs O needs to have her own cooking channel; the food she cooks for you Mr O looks delicious 😋
Brings back memories of our 2001 Sienna trying to break my daughters leg (no edge pressure sensors of any kind) - That door motor was RIPPED out that night..
Some years ago(39) when I bought my first car, the dealer(s)/shops I took my car for service would always lube/grease all the hinges (hood, doors and trunk) as part of the free service.
Mr O has instilled some faith back into the automotive industry.
Thank you!
Every factory service manual lube job spec. describes greasing hinges and latches with every oil change.
@@MrRShoaf I think I can count on a grenadejugglers two stumps how many times that happens these days..
@@MrRShoaf Ford in their infinite wisdom ditched that from their yearly service plan, at least here in Germany. I suppose in an effort to make service cheaper for leased cars. They specifically tell you to only lube the hood latch. I don't even, just why?
I had to do this same job on our ‘08 sienna a couple years ago when it started dragging against the bottom sill. I was curious how Mr O would do it. Aside from the minor differences in design between the years (the cable runs over in mine instead of under on this one) it was pretty much the same. I also had to go out and look at mine to verify it came painted black from the dealer so not need to paint or fluid film it.
My wife has driven it for 14 years now and doesn’t want to get rid of it until the kids are out of the house and she can transition to something smaller. It is a tank.
I have a 2008 also, head gasket blew. Two mechanics said this is common for siennas and that I would need to replace the engine. Price to repair equals value of car. Interested in your thoughts. Would you replace or scrap the car? (There are other issues with the car that were irritating, but otherwise I liked the car)
@@fayenewsom2197 If it is really just the head gasket, then have them replaced. Real question is how rusty is it? Super rusty = don't keep, not too bad, then worth considering.
If you decide to scape it I'll buy it from you if u willing to sell
Easy Peasy Eric! When I have an unpainted part like that I just rattle can it with some Rust Oleum Black paint. Thumbs UP Eric! 👍
Thanks for all the videos lately. You make it all look easy even though I'm sure it isn't.
I have installed several of those hinges and have only painted a few. No problems here HOWEVER I have heard of snow only in stories. It snowed here 1 time in my life and that was the great storm of 89! There was snow here for nearly 8hours one day! Never since
You and the customer both made a good call to "just slap it on", of course Mr O takes it up a notch by preventing the Northern rust belt from deteriorating his work. These vehicles don't last long in our area.
Good video . 👍
It is always a pleasure to see Mrs. O. And I like the pot holder on the refrigerator , "feel good, do good" 💯👍
I rattle canned my 06 middle hinge replacement. Scotch Brite the metal, prime, and paint to match body color.
I'd ve painted it. It delays the job for an hour, but in the end it looks good. People say they don't care, but in reality they notice when its isn't. Still, as you say, do as the customer asks'.
Another evening vid!
Thanks my guy!
Any time!
You are awesome. This is exactly what I needed to watch. Thank you.
Eric I have used a number of your videos repairing the kids cars . Having setup a Bend Pak lift in my Garage and have been a backyard mechanic from the mid 70s we have benefited from your expert videos as most of their cars are 10 year rusted Ontario vehicles. Thanks for the help. The cost of basic vehicle maintenance keeps climbing this helps them keeps costs in line. Now I need videos on keeping 4 grandkids maintained LOL. Rod
Don't know about videos, but I do know that my 4 grandkids cost $$$$$$$$ to maintain
I used to have a 95 Honda Camry. One time I was driving back from Utah to California with a wind behind me, and when I stopped in
Elko, NV I filled up and checked my mileage and had got 34 MPG. I checked it 3 times! I couldn't believe it! Man I miss that car!!
Years ago I had a Dodge Grand Caravan with similar issues. They were not made well. Thanks for being real.
Had many people ask how I trained my shop cat to come when I snapped my fingers and talked to me when I asked them what they were doing. After watching you and Luna interact, I've decided it must be a MECHANIC thing. As the Super Bowl add said, "Anyone can herd cattle, but it takes a real man to herd cats".
So Eric, I had to tell you about this. I recently bought a 2003 Pontiac Vibe. The seller had a hand full of repair receipts from 2 shops. From watching your videos and looking at the repairs on the vibe I could tell one shop was great, did good work, put things back together properly and used good parts. The other shop-no good, wires hanging, screws/bolts loose, missing. Poor quality parts (the dor*** type). Even viewers who do not do their own work have been taught by you what to look for to spot great/quality work. Millions and millions of people around the world are spotting good work thanks to you. Celebrate with some KFC. You have earned it!
About 5 minutes in I realized I could watch everything you did in the reflection 🤔
Those doors were a nightmare. I watched Toyota techs battle every day with these and the cables for years. I worked there in management before retiring . Worked for VW for almost 30 years!! It was an eyeopener for sure!!
Door hindges painted by the body shop were usually more screwed than bare metal!! Don't ask!! Fluid film seems perfectly acceptable!!
Years ago VW had a trunk hinge problem. The replacement hinges were either zink or cadmium plated....good stuff. The whiner customers got the hinges painted.....more trouble than ever worth. The beautiful coated hinges never had a problem and never rusted!! Nice!!
When you think about the normal life of a sealed roller bearing it's revolutions are in the millions. I can't imagine these rollers saw even ten thousand revolutions and they're destroyed! Quality is a term no longer used in design and manufacturing.
Nice work my friend and keep them coming!
Those rollers don't have ball bearings. The rollers are plastic/rubber with a brass sleeve in the center that functions as a sleeve bearing. Because that support is exposed to dirt, the brass sleeve bearing gets destroyed after around 10-years of use (where I live) and the rollers start dragging. Once this happens, the door will stop or reverse itself mid travel. The motion of the bracket gets so rough that the mechanism believes that something is obstructing the door. The safety systems kick in and stop/reverse the door. I think it would've been better to use a sealed bearing. That said, I don't know if they could make a bearing that small (about 10mm-15mm OD) that could take the weight of those doors.
I had an upper door hinge roller replaced under warranty. They have to order the part. Send it to an auto body shop. 2-3 weeks after delivery to the dealer. Then no guarantees it comes back the same color. They finally switched autobidy shops after i completed my repair. They also forgot to call me that the part was in. All depends if you want to wait. Love the cat.
Man this guy is making me so happy with all these new videos.
I love the way you do a thorough job with caution and sound advice for us novices. Keep up the great work!
8:00 I’m glad you told me about the reach-around before doing it, Eric. Thank you.
Easy job made tough in tight quarters. Made the bolts look like they were a foot long. Man, you're careful and skilled. No scratches or even smudges!
I installed a loud horn on my boat and was out of rattle can black paint to protect the bare metal bracket I made. I applied some gun blue liquid with a brush and turned it dark blue/black. It hasn't rusted in all the years it has been on the bow of my boat. It's just so easy to do and I like the color of it too. If you don't mind it being black......
Nice fix Mr. O. Nice to Mrs. O and of course your cat.
Still waiting for the inaugural episode of "South Main Kitchen"!!
Always nice to see Mrs. O.
Fantastic . Sharing this to all my Toyota Siena Tarago Estima pages . Thank you very much Eric from Australia 🇦🇺
I can almost guarantee you I will never do this job but thanks to this guy if I have to I will know how.
Shop kitties are just THE bomb, aren't they?? I have one I can't get out of the garage when I'm wood working, machining, mechanicing, anything.
The new hinge looks like it is Zinc passivated so no real requirement for paint.
Looks like I'll be doing a little preventive maintenance on my '13 Sienna door hinges tonight. Hope it's not too late. Thanks!
Don't think I'll ever be doing this but I enjoy learning new things. Well done. Off subject, I noticed you doing something that I've caught myself doing along with observing others. When you verify the ratchet direction you like myself and others, do it at least twice if not three times. Nothing meant by this, just an observation. Thanks for sharing your time and expertise.
It's just what you do, like a drill , you have to pull the trigger 2 or 3 times when you pick it up
The name of my new band "Ham and Cheese, Pasta and Peas"... thanks Mrs O
TY Eric enjoyed seeing you tackle that sliding hinge for the first time on a Toyota. Also an added bonus seeing 2 other loves of your life the lovely Mrs O and "Luna" the wonder cat. Hope your weekend ahead is excellent for you and family.
Hugs and Love from Australia

This is my first time watching one of your videos. I was laughing within the first few minutes. I don't think I've ever been so entertained while watching a car repair video! Thanks for the good info and the giggles. ("Take some lessons, Honda!")
Love all the out of the ordinary repairs. Your the best. Just told my 22 year old nephew mechanic to subscribe to you and he will learn tons.
Boy that's easier than the Honda odysseys. Thanks Good video
Oh for sure
I did it! Great instructions and tips. Thank you!
This is timely, my son's Sienna just broke a cable and I suspect that center roller may be a culprit like it was on my Hondoo.
Sounded like some of the other rollers / hardware needed a spritz of fluid film when the door was opening and closing.
Eric, the customer is always right. If she didn't want the part painted then so be it and thanks for the video, also side note Mrs. O needs to post her recipes.
Video is a testament to the patience required using hand tools in tight quarters.
I think I would have given the raw steel component a rattle can treatment, even if it’s the wrong color, just for my own peace of mind. Will it be better than the factory coating and a sweet fluid film treatment? Only time could tell.
Awesome channel, great to see a quality driven, intelligent and kind business thriving in these peculiar times.
7:43 - actually, through the miracle of reflection in the window - we CAN see your face, and yep, I'd call it "not super concerned", most definitely.
"Just a whisker. A thicc one!" Ah, we call that one the Blueberry Blonde!
I learned was if you're painting the door, it's better to take off the mirror and belt molding (the trim at the bottom of the window) for a better paint job in the end. The mirror can get in the way, and if you're unlucky, the clear coat could stick in that gap between the door and the belt molding.
He wasn't talking about painting the door, he was talking about the new hinge which is bare metal.
automotive stuff aside, watching you and ms,s O interact you are a lucky man. Consider me jealous. And when mom's away its a great time to gain brownie points with the kids with some junk food :) just need to add "don't tell yer mom" lol
I can't tell you how much I love watching your shows! You care so much about everything! I love how you "feed the children" with KFC and I see the price for that stuff is as stupid there as it is here in Canada! Oh, still waiting for the "Cooking with Mrs. O" channel! I'll be the first to subscribe! You both are awesome!
“Not my super concerned face”, we could actually see it in the reflection. I watched half the video through the reflection, made for a good view of aligning the bolts, and seeing what you were seeing.
You did paint it, with Fluid Film! Thanks for the video!!!
An SMA Video, Mrs. O, Luna, doesn't get better than that! Thanks for the ride along. Did see your "not super concerned " Face in the window, for the win!
good job!! even got to see mrs o..........
Love the Luna kitty!
Good job Eric O. Appreciate the videos sir
You said, "I'm a Toyota center hinge virgin". Then in about fifteen minutes, you went from virgin to surgeon! Good job, Eric!
Being a body guy I would say paint it, however I'm retired so I don't really care anymore. It matches going down the road.
exactly what I was thinking then ya said it...must be the mouse milk!!! Man I'm quite certain there is never ever a dull moment around the O-Farm on or off campus!! Going deer hunting Mr O stops looks around thinks for a minute--whats up Mr O? Gosh dang it, I forgot the mouse milk...
Hey fellow today Mrs O said for lunch today it’s take it or leave it!!!LOL!!!!!
Hi, Mr. and Mrs. O. I had a nice cat like that. I miss Blacky. Thanks for sharing! Stay healthy!
How much were the center hinge rollers and where did you buy them
Saving this one for when I need to do this myself. Much obliged!
if this was my Sienna, One nicely worded letter to Toyota in Japan this repair would have been covered under the recall 🙂
Great video as usual, but Mrs O should open a Cafe/Restaurant as everything she makes causes my mouth to water!
Mrs O's Diner, opening soon in a town near you
We need a South Main Cooking channel with Mrs. O!
only if the mechanics down in nyc had the same kind of mentality and work ethics of Eric... i'd be happy to give them my money.
Luna is adorable! Such a lovely colour too. I used to have cats, but can't have them where I live now :(
Wife: "You're too self-centered!"
Me: "Just like a Toyota door bolt." mic drop
Eric: Mom's out of town kids. It's time for a Bucket of Chicken!
Mrs O and Luna always make a great ending to a great video!
Dang you made that look easy - Look being the key word. I know if I do it there would be a lot more cussing, Bloody knuckles & tools flying around the shop. TY for the Video Love them all.
That hinge looked to have a cadmium or phosphate coating on it. If so, it's not going to rust anytime soon. The Fluid Film was icing on the cake though.
Mrs. O. (lovely as always) should have a cast iron 13x9x2 pan. You haven't lived until you've had lasagna, homemade mac n cheese or whatever your favorite is made in a cast iron casserole/cake pan!
My shop cat Elmer says meellow to Luna!
Nice Vid! My vote would have been for rattle can in black. It would have blended in with the glass, and no need to try and match the white...cheers!
Eric, great job! Thanks for Sharing!
So many videos i can't keep up! Good job man. I used to check your channel for video's but now they just pop up!
Had the cable break and the inside roller break on the door in 2006 Sienna. We had the car for 8 years. Replacing the cable and the rollers is expensive OEM parts. I just cut the cable and we used the door manually.
Very nice tutorial! Very helpful, well done, and clearly explained! I have a question for you; I have an issue the power sliding door of my 2002 Sienna. The door will open but will not close with the power push button. Have you any suggestions how to fix this? It has closed a few times but not for quite some time now. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. TYVM
Hey Eric!!! Fluid Film needs their own "Brake cleaner" sound!!! We live for those! Well I do.
He uses the sheep noise for it.
Great video, definitely easier than my Honda!
3:00 Disappointed you didn't call out the classic reach around. 😀
Those Siennas were/are like Sherman tanks. They just go forever. We had an 08 bought new and sold it just a couple years ago - I'm convinced she was barely broken in. The sliding door was acting a *little* sticky, but worked. Thanks as always, Eric!
Parts cannon crew must of taken the day off today. Good vid. IDK with the New York "We R Rust" state, I might have sprayed some white primer on it. Down the road If the customer wants it to match the van let him get the rattle can. Just advise him to get some plastic or brown paper and some tape and a good solvent based cleaner that evaporates fairly quickly.
Where I grew up we call that meal “hot dish”😋👍🏻
What about cleaning out the track those new rollers are rollin on?
This is a perfect reason why I never have automatic anything on my vehicles (except for transmissons). If it's manual it's easier to maintain and repair.
Use the power function until they break, that could be years and then use em manually.. Easy peasy.
7:45 We can see it in the reflection from the glass 😁
Nice video. This one caused me to spend some money. I went and checked out that Mouse Milk. Sounded like some good stuff and what I probably needed when trying to get a rusted brake line fitting out yesterday so I ordered some. I had to use heat but it was a struggle since my torch kept going out because it was so windy.
Eric,
Great video - thank you! I couldnt see your super concerned face but I could see the _reflection_ of your super concerned face in the glass.

Professor O you are the best ! Another great video !
Love the BBB...bionic bolt beating..high speed removal and install. 😁🇨🇦👍
