Also: Salmon Run! Your momentum already gets canceled when you drop an egg in the basket when you're in inkling form, which is nice, but if you add sub strafing when you grab an egg, it makes the process of running them so much faster. And when it gets hectic, or when there are a lot of eggs to run, those split seconds really start to add up.
I love how you mentioned Salmon Run is a good place to practice painting feet to move on unpainted ground! This technique is so useful especially when all three teammates died and I am the only one alive with all the bosses chasing me after :) Btw Salmon Run is also useful to practice sub-strafing when you want to run eggs as fast as possible or dodge missiles from the Flyfish
thank you for making this!! just made s+ rank for the first time but i do notice i still walk and shoot quite a bit. this thorough explanation is great to keep in my head and practice!!
Super informative video, I really appreciate how you went throught the cons and pros of each weapon class as well as other strafing strategies, it really was missing from all the other guides so there was a lot of guessing and practicing from there. Good job!
when using naut you can cancel firing into charge. since you can also store partial charges with naut, you can pop out of the ink, shoot, hold ZR again, go back into the ink instantly and store the remaining charge, then move and pop out again (probably with a jump since naut doesn't get extra air rng and it lets it hold momentum), then fire. main downside is that for every charge storing weapon with the exception of goo tuber, popping out of ink with a charge puts you into a bit of lag.
02:56 - Confirmed. I just tested all 50 non-Rainmaker/Salmon-Run (brings total up to 55) weapons in the game, not counting variants. Although, main strafing and sub-strafing is not useful with chargers and the Nautilus (ms is slow with this one) with the exception of the Goo Tuber (you can abuse main strafing with how fast is it, it's insane).
@@SquidSchool Well, I knew I heard somewhere that all weapons cannot main strafe, but I could not remember if all of them could substrafe. As soon as I heard 02:56, I stopped what I was doing and had to test this. Now, would that technique that you mentioned for Clam Blitz work with Power Clams as well?
The nautilus can save its charge. If you press ZR before pressing ZL, you'll keep whatever charge you had saved up. I'd say this weapon can technically main strafe effectively.
Yes, that is one part of this video that I present inaccurately; I put it in the description and pinned it in a comment. I wouldn't say it can main strafe as well as, say, an N-Zap, it's a lot slower and less maneuverable than that, but it's still more effective than it is as I present it.

That salmon run tip I completely agree on it’s really helpful unless the weapon rotation has a roller. Really helpful video has usual I seen a lot of shooter players use this method. Rainmaker my least favorite mod cause I don’t know how to use the the dang thing.
Yeah, Salmon Run will force you to learn the different movement options used by weapons you may not care to play. I seem to recall you get to choose if you play it in LAN mode though? Don't quote me on that but that might be an option
3:05 This exact point also applies to the Beakon, in case it wasn't obvious - I've actually used sub-strafing in a match before while having beakons (but ofc it wasn't in an engagement I just wanted to turn around fast lol)
When I was smurfing through the lower ranks for the Ranked series, I would get lazy sometimes and stop strafing during fights, and I got splatted for it constantly. It's so important to do habitually
@@SquidSchool yeah. Ngl, I used to not do it, cause 1. I didn't know it was a thing, and 2. I didn't think it was needed. I got X rank in tower and didn't strafed once, which is impressive, but thinking back on it, I was like, I probably would be killed so much if I did that more, so I just learned it lol
Nautilus charge you don’t have to have a full charge to hold it, it can be any amount. You are even able to shoot half your charge, press Zr to hold it then swim with the remainder still stored. Edit: I see someone else already noticed and commented
If you do want to improve, consistent, thoughtful practice is how you get there. Don't just play the game, actively think after every game about how you're going to approach the next game better. @@SquidSchool Hey bravo it’s only been a week but just know i reached my final x in rm!! tysm for the videos u make they helped me out alot in this journey!
i dont think they would ever patch sub or main strafing because that stuff is like. kind of expected for the game to do even if you dont know how to explicitly exploit it. im a low level player and i still like to be able to retreat quickly in the other direction after swimming up to someone and pulling the trigger. it would feel bad if they added a delay to compensate. wavedashing is significantly less fundamental and more realistic to patch without ruining the feel of the game
Moving at a right angle from the direction they're aiming is good for throwing their aim off, and jumping can mess their aim up, but if it's too obvious a pattern, strong players will catch on and it'll probably stop working. If by "around them" you mean you're crossing them up, that's really strong, provided your weapon wants to be at short range against theirs.
@@SquidSchool I just went and played a few rounds and I move in a curve around them? My thumb is doing two things at once, clicking the b button and the bottom of the thumb moves the stick. I play handheld and I realized I look really strange playing lol
@@tangerine7068 I generally recommend using motion for engagements and only using sticks when you need to look around or when you need to add extra speed to your motion aiming, but if you aren't using motion or your sensitivity is low, that might be the only way you can adjust your aim while moving. Like I say in the video, you should also consider staying grounded and strafing depending on your weapon, because jumping is a big commitment and makes you an easier target in some ways.
@@SquidSchool yeah my usage of motion and the sticks are a bit messed up since I use too much of one rather then utilizing them both. And I need to work on my strafing more :)! Thank you so much!
To bad L-3 and H-3 have a much longer shot strafe making it weaker in comparison to a Kshot’s shot-strafe or any other non burst fire shot-strafe. This is compensated by mpu damage up and the ability to 1 burst a guy. Killing them before they can aim Edit:fixed a grammatical error
You have a good point. As with many competitive players before me, the standard I hold myself to is pretty high. It can sound silly sometimes to hear a strong player talk about how they're "bad" but focusing on what they can improve on is the way they get better, and it can occupy so much of their headspace that they blow their errors out of proportion. If you compare me to a Japanese 2900 XP N-Zap player, yes this is bad aim. That's not exactly a favorable comparison for anyone to make, but it's what I'm working toward. But it's definitely not bad aim by most people's reckoning.
This gave me an idea. If that is bad aim for you and I perceive that as good aim I really need to train my aim to get good at this game. So now I'm just gonna head to the training room and only practise my aim until I never miss a shot.
