- Lets kick off 2014 with a bang and by that I mean a Kickarse trailer for Sonic Adventure 2. seriously though I swear this trailer makes Sonic Adventure 2 seem like a much darker game than the finished product but man do I love this trailer it looks and sounds so mysterious and cool Hell I think it looks borderline horror movie considering its advertisement of shadow and the creepy music accompanying the trailer.

Even in the beta, SEGA knew that Sonic skyboarding out of the helicopter was a money shot.
It was a great way to start off the game with an action set piece.

Something to note is that there is no footage at all of tails or rouge which supports the small fact that in early production the game was only going to have Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles and Robotnik as playable characters but the fan demand for Tails was so high that they brought him in along with Rouge so they can make it into a 3 vs 3 team narrative

I was 6 when I saw this trailer. I always thought that "black hedgehog" is a corrupted transformation of Sonic.
Which might explain the whole "Well why are stupid people mistaking Shadow for Sonic scene" later on in the game.

As a kid around that time I was pretty excited for this new cooler looking hedgehog with the air shoes that looked like he could give Knuckles a run for his money.
Around that time we weren't drowning in Sonic games so it was pretty big.

I think my favorite part of The trailer is when it goes to the chao garden. The way that the trailer makes the product look really serious makes that just stand out. Anyway good trailer for a great game.
Yeah I still think the game would have a lot less plot holes if they stuck with the original storyline for SA2 though.
***** To be fair most of the plot holes are not really plot holes just unexplained or unlikely to happen. A lot of the confusing stuff is off screen so it doesn't contradict anything which is at least to me what a plot hole is. I view the story the same way as I do with Die Hard I just go for the ride more then anything else. By the way my new copy of Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast just came in the mail.

When I said plotholes I was referring more to fan complaints (Cough cough Somecallmejohnny) about how they say that certain elements don't make sense (which they do if you really look at the story and level asthetics.
Also DUDE EXCELLENT have fun man.

For me it depends on the medium I mean not to discredit Sonic but I also go for your action movie mentality when it comes to Sonic games (probably the only reason I don't bitch about Sonic Colours or Lost world's story)
But if it's a franchise that's been praised for it's high story detail (like Silent Hill for example) then that's usually when I tend to go a little to Lewis Medeiros on everything.
yet at the same time personally I think SA2's story is a lot deeper than many people say it is or at least in terms of character development.

The rise of a legendary game.
Back when Sonic games used to be cool and took themselves seriously.
Something was lost along the way to be certain.
Chris Joseph Is was that shit about seriousness which got sonic to an awful reputation.
Sebman The classic games are a lot more serious than anything from Colors to Lost World. It has nothing to do with how serious something is that makes it bad. Sure 06 was a misstep, but it wasn't the serious tone or gameplay style that ruined the game. It was the rushed development. Sonic might exist in a fantasy world, but it's pretty well grounded, and has a lot of lore built into it. Same with the characters when they used to care about making them feel real and likable. Sonic isn't some generic ass Mario character that has absolutely no substance. With all of this in mind, I always come to the conclusion that Sonic works best when its takes itself seriously. Another example would be the Sonic Archie comics. They lasted for 24 years. Sure it started off as a goofy comic strip, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have lasted as long if it didn't evolve into something that took itself seriously. This is just how I see it.
Chris Joseph Classic Sonic it's just about a little blue brat who saves the world from the most kind of generic villian in existence. Then Colors is just that, and it works perfect.
It was with all of that edgy early 2000's vibes that the games become overly complicated and awfuly glitchy. I don't understand why fans wants a franchise with colorful cartoony corny animals to become gritty tragedies, it just look dumb.
And don't even try to put Mario to this conversation. I mean, everything has been fucking perfect with mario games since day one. If anything Sega should need to put a lot o attention about how Mario is as fresh as ever.
Sebman There is a HUGE difference between the personality of the classics and what you see in something like Colors. Sure Sonic is protecting nature and beating a mad scientist, BUT what about the personality and presentation? Were the classic games really as simple as you think? Sonic's world is filled with ancient ruins and floating islands. Realistic cities and mysterious artifacts. There is real substance to his world, and the characters in it have real personality. You see character development for Tails and Knuckles in those games. In any case the classic games are left for interpretation. Do you want it to be simple or complex? Now let's look at Colors. Eggman is no longer a real villain. Just a comedic pushover. Sonic and Tails are just parodies of themselves with no real development. The "story" is about as shitty as a Mario game story. It's almost as if they tried turning Sonic into Mario. Which doesn't work with a franchise that has a lot of established lore and characters.
Another thing. Everone is always going on about "the edgy characteristics of the 90s and 2000s ruined Sonic". That is a completely hypocritical argument considering Sonic for Sega Genesis was marketed as an edgier alternative to Nintendo/Mario. It's literally part of his character. "He's got an attitude". Not to mention the classic games have their fair share of edginess. Look at Sonic 3&K. Eggman carpet bombed Angel Island and napalmed its forests. Have you ever played Knuckles' Chaotix? That game literally ends with a giant Metal Sonic destroying a realistic looking city that is already engulfed in flames. That's exactly the kind of stuff you'd see in the early 2000s Sonic. He's basically an action hero. You are supposed to be on the edge of your seat when playing these games.
I mentioned earlier that Sonic has a lot of lore, right? They literally brought over all of the pre existing lore, and the personality, from the classic games into Adventure. The only difference was a stronger narrative and a redisign. Notice how every main game from Sonic 1 all the way to Shadow the Hedgehog all build off of the game before it? Sonic Heroes deviated a little bit because they didn't want to make SA3, 06 was supposed to be a reboot, and ever since Unleashed they have never been consistent. The classic games may have simple stories, but they still took themselves seriously and there is a lot of complexity aside from Sonic's adventures alone. Sonic Colors only took the "Sonic vs Eggman" narrative and absolutely nothing else.
I think you forget that gaming wasn't at it's peak in the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean come on were talking about PS2s and Gamecubes. How many glitchy games were on those older systems, that was worse than any Sonic game, that people still love? Really the only Sonic game that doesn't have an excuse was 06 because the 360 was a powerhouse.
You say Sonic shouldn't be taken seriously because he's a goofy looking cartoon animal? Well, Batman dresses up as a flying rat and fights circus clowns for a living. Everone still takes him seriously. The point is, just because it sounds dumb on paper doesn't mean the execution can't be something more. Sonic has proven that time and again. The Ninja Turtles are goofy animal characters, but guess what. The original Ninja Turtles comics, that came before the original cartoon I might add, was super dark and gritty. Much more than Sonic. And people liked that.
"Mario is as fresh as ever". Lol only because of Mario Odyssey. That's the first interesting looking Mario game in years. Mario would still be as stale as ever if this game didn't release. My point with Mario is the fact that the personality and world of Sonic isn't as generic and abstract as Mario, and shouldn't be treated that way. Yes he could learn from the Mario franchise.
One more thing. I'm pretty sure Sega said something once about Sonic being for kids, right? I don't think I know any kid who is into the kiddy attitude of the Sonic franchise now. It's literally the kids who asked for Sonic to be more serious. All Sega has been doing is nostalgia pandering to the man children who grew up in the 80s and 90s who think Sonic should only be a soulless platformer with no appeal. This is all just my opinion and nothing against yours. I think Sonic works much better of it takes itself seriously. If you don't agree that's cool. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
This is somewhat creepy but I think it is appropriate for the story in SA2, which is definitely unsettling the more you think about it

BenPictures1 Well....at first Tails wasnt originally going to be playable in this game. So maybe thats the case. But because of the fans wanting tails in this game, but instead of having his gameplay from adventure 1, his in that mech shooting like Eggman. Maybe it's a last minute decision if they wanna put tails playable or not.
BenPictures1 basically this is trailer is the basic concept for SA2. We've got the three gameplay styles mapped here as speed, treasure hunting and shooting stages. At this point in development, they only had Knuckles, Sonic and Eggman as playable characters. Fan demand did bring tails back, but they kept him in a mech to make the play styles they had already thought up for the game consistent. We can assume after they realized that Tails should be in a mech, that maybe there should be two characters per play style. And this we got Shadow (His name was originally Terios) and Rouge as playable characters

Sonic in Sky Rail, which is a Shadow stage on the final release. I always found Sky Rail's music more fiting for a Sonic stage, now I know why.
Also no Soap Shoes, beta logo, no Tails.
Yeah I believe since Sonic, Knuckles, and Eggman were planned to be the only playable characters, that Sky Rail along with Radical Highway would have been Sonic levels. I think their music fits Sonic well, whereas White Jungle and Final Chase were definitely added for Shadow and the music reflects that very well.
