  • Facing an intensely competitive local market, Dulux tasked Innocean Indonesia with using its products to solve a direct issue, close to home. The team’s idea? In hot and humid South-East Asia, flies are a major problem. Most schoolchildren eat outside, putting them at risk. The creatives discovered scientific data suggesting flies dislike bright colours, and responded with Yellow Canteen, a series of school eating areas painted to repel flies.
They built a website where schools could apply to be painted, and received wide coverage across traditional and social media. Yellow Canteen won a D&AD Yellow Pencil in the Spatial Design category, and two Graphites in Use of Budget and Local Solution.
The subsequent ‘copycat’ yellow canteens are a good thing, says Innocean CCO Chow Kok Keong: “Our client is the bigger company, and can afford to be the bigger person … [By] showing that they can be part of society, and solve some social problems for people.”
