  • This is song was quite a big challenge. The first part consists of me playing the supporting bass line. Then at about 2 and a half minutes in I'll start playing the solo-line. I made about two or three mistakes in the solo-line. I'd like to mention that, since the solo-line is very hard to cover in a perfect way, that I did improvise a lot but did play some of the most important licks in the song. Enjoy and give me pointers when needed. If you have any suggestions on songs I should cover or perhaps want me to cover a certain song, do not hesitate to ask.
    I'd also like to thank my good friend David Hartwig for making the recordings possible.

    Big Entwistle fan and bassist here, you played the solo very well, but what stood out to me was the right hand technique: you got it down! The hand angled at about 40° from the neck, the fingerpicking/tapping/popping hybrid, the harmonics created by the fingers hitting the high frets, that's the Entwistle way!

    • @theoneafternineonine
      @theoneafternineonine  8 років тому +13

      Yeah, but to be fair you sort of do that ajtomatically when you try to copy his sound. It's a very enjoyable playing style.

    this kid did more than just the justice to this song. His playing is flawless. He literally walked in the dark right behind John Entwistle, he stepped exactly where John stepped. He knew the foot steps a little too much, he knew John.

    There are no tabs really, I just listened to this song a bunch of times and played along. That way I could play along with the big lines a bit. The rest was mostly a little bit of improvisation.

    Good job dude, sounds great!!!! Entwistle will always be the best:& greatest person/individual musician that could EVER have possibly happened to/& within the ENTIRE Genre/& History of Rock n Roll music. He's also one of my biggest influences as a "Bass Guitarist"!!!! Over the years sooooo many incredible, & talented bass players/& bass guitarists alike have inspired, & influenced me to the extent that John Entwistle's influence on my current personal playing skill/& playing style isn't nearly as obvious/or as prevalent as it was for me during the first 5-6 years playing Bass. Starting from when I got my first bass, and began learning all that I know today, & took a turn to make my life/& career be the one of a musician (Bass Guitarist/& Singer). if you saw/or heard how I play right now you probably wouldn't think Entwistle is one of my big influences, & inspirations, but he most certainly is, & always will be one of my top 5 biggest personal influences as a bass player. Along with Roger Waters, Geezer Butler, Bob Daisly, Krist Novoselic.
    P.S. You should post a bass cover of Pink Floyd's song Pigs (3 Different Ones), off of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals, & try to pull it off 100% PERFECTLY/& FLAWLESS. Pretty unique licks/fills/& runs all around the entire neck, as well as just a great, funky, & interesting bass line the whole song through. Take care bro, keep up the good work, & never stop being a "Bass Guitarist"!!!!!!!!!

    Needed to learn this for a jam thing. Your video was the most instructive of the many on YT!
    Between the wonderful people posting "bass along" videos and the "Amazing Slow-Downer"
    program you can learn anything! Boy you kids don't know what it was like in the olden days -
    playing the record over and over and over to pick up a bass line 😁
    Doing the "authentic fingerboard tapping" ala Entwistle is great.

    Really good job mate. There's a lot of downward slides after each of the licks when the song is at the C# section. You might be missing these because they're at the same time as the snare hit. I slide down from the A string's 16th fret (C#) as the snare hits, and when the song goes to C the slide is from the A string's 15th fret (same note but one octave higher). Not taking anything away from you, it sounds good. I play it differently every time.

      geddy ahead of john huh. I agree they're both all-time greats. It's so tough for me to choose one or the other. is there a particular reason you'd put geddy ahead of john? Just interested because it's such a close comparison to me.

      @@thedoctorroth No offense intended towards JE- Rip. I suppose my bias would be because I’ve been a Rush “nut” since the late 70’s when I discovered them, and have seen them live 6 times. And I mentioned Squire because I’ve done my share of Yes exploration, although never seen them live. I recommend the full show when they played Lugano Jazz Fest Switzerland in 2004, full concert is here on YT. Also, Lee and Squire have a bit of a “connection” in my mind. When Yes was inducted into the R&R HOF, Squire had passed and Lee was chosen to Induct them and also play with Yes for the short live set at the induction. I’m just more familiar with those bassists. As I said, no disparaging Entwistle. You said it perfectly- they’re both (or all) to be recognized as “The Greats.” (And moving to Jazz/R&B, Stanley Clarke is no slouch either- School Days)

    • @dkwoodsy2082
      @dkwoodsy2082 2 роки тому

      @@thedoctorroth After our discussion the other nite and some long overdue research, I’ve “rethunk” my rankings. I still maintain that Lee, Squire and Entwistle are top 3, but I have moved JE to the top. I’ve just taken him for granted, that he was always “back there” and providing solid bass all the time. I now see he was WAY more than that. Thank you sir for bringing it to my attention.

    I'm a great John Entwhistle fan and a Who fan. I think you've done well in getting his sound and it's close to what got. It seems you're using a 5 string Bass? Perhaps you could go over how to get his sound, your example shows you need to master your technique before you go buying expensive guitars. Many guitarist are abscessed about buying their heroes guitar before they can even play. I think give a good guitarist one guitar and a good amp and a few effects and he or she will be able to get most guitar and bass sounds without having to spend an arm and a leg on equipment. Thumbs up, keep up the good work :) Here is some poor playing by me, I'm a huge Paul Weller fan You do Something to me - Mark McGlashan

      I didn't change to an alternate tuning for the song so I think not. If you want to play the supporting bass line (so not the solo one as you see me do right at the beginning) You would probably need to tune down your E string accordingly so you can play the low note which I believe is a C# if I remember correctly.

      It's more in the technique of tapping the strings with the tips of yours fingers and making themgive you that thumpy sound. It's not necessarily playing close to the neck, you can just experiment with that to get a sound you like.
