In conversation with Carmen Machado, author of the forthcoming story collection Her Body and Other Parties.
Yiyun Li’s “remarkable” (The Washington Post) debut fiction collection, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, won the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, the PEN/Hemingway Award, and the Guardian First Book Award. She was a 2010 MacArthur Fellow, one of Granta’s 21 best young American novelists under 35, and one of The New Yorker’s top 20 writers under 40. She is also the author of the novel The Vagrants and the story collection Gold Boy, Emerald Girl. In her first nonfiction book, she weaves her identities as author, mother, and immigrant, and her treasured literary influences to confront questions about selfhood, art, and recovery.

Her experience and achievement is pretty unique and amazing, just wondering in the future in which direction she will move and which way she will live or stay in?

I can answer this question for you. I think she will continue to be a writer and live as a writer, but as VS Naipaul said that as a writer is not some kind of situation you reach and stay. Most possibly she will slowly get rid of Chinese elements in her writing and write some topic with more broad recognition so that establishes herself as great international writer

The thing that I feel a bit shocking is that her speech is not so good even for such a celebrated writer as her.
