gastrid neither, it’s how routines consume people without them even realising. Break any routines once you spot them....even the smallest variation is a step towards freedom
I actually agree with this perspective, too. The film puts a pretty big emphasis on the character's addictions throughout the whole thing. There's quite the number of scenes involving alcohol or cigarettes. Three different bedroom scenes caught my eye especially (0:23, 3:22, 4:09). In the first one there's some remains of pizza and a single bottle. In the second scene, the ashtray is visible on the windowsill and another bottle sits by the bed. In the third, the bottle's still there, but the ashtray moves ever closer. Eventually, at 4:38, displays how addiction can start controlling your own life, and soon, shows that addiction can end it at any time. I thought it was going to be a video solely about a work routine, but I soon came to believe it's also about an addictive, habitual routine. Of course, it can be linked to depression as well, since such addictions are usually a means of coping with that sort of thing anyway. That's my analysis at least. An optional but important part of art is leaving certain things up to the audience's interpretation and theorizing.
His ‘depression’ grew because of his shit routine. It eventually consumed him. We all have the ability to change our routine for our benefit. Routine isn’t the problem. It’s the stupid belief that we have no control of our routine, That is the real issue.

And how do you change your routine when most of your day is working and traveling to/from work, and your free time is like 2-3 hours a day when you are tired as fuck? Everytime I'm trying to do some activity I reduce my sleep time because otherwise I just don't have time.
depression, means when you don’t have enough energy to change anything. even when you misspell one word, you couldn’t correct it. just keep living hang in there
That's why people need the help of the other to conquire the depression because they can't do it by themselves its just to big just like the black things in the animation
From what I have gained from this short film. For those of you who are unaware of what that creature was-- It was "Death". The guy spent all his days in the same routine, striking each day as it came He didn't have a choice but to live the same way as most of the people in society live passing life by. His sedentary lifestyle -smoking, drinking, overworking, and sleeping late added to his coming closer to the end.. If you noticed he worked 12 hours a day. This is a message for us to wake up and do the things we love!
Interesting interpretation! I like others thought that the black monsters was either his depression or his routine Ur viewpoint is also worth taking into consideration
No. I'm in class 12 . Students only think that they have stress too but that's not the actual stress. Project and assignment are given with some time. But some students like you never do them until the deadline has arived so close that it is very hard to do the work. Then you say we have lot of work and stress
It is called getting a job and working 40 hours weekly. Unless if you came from a rich family... 99percent of people live like this... especially in US, if you get fired from the job, you have to get your own insurance. Which cost a lot of money. Let’s just hope that everything will be okay for everyone. That they can find a purpose in their life in someway or other.
Wow, 3 years later and I come back to this short film.. Update: I have been working 12hr days m-f, for a whole year. And feel exactly like this character
Francisco Calvache Exactly my thoughts. It did look really cute. Then turned into a monster. He could've treated himself with a shirt trip to break the monotony. That's what I do.

This film is understandable to those who have faced a constant cycle in life, it is depressing and annoying, but you can’t do anything, because you just don’t care what kind of shit is happening in your life. And this is exactly what is happening to me now.
U actually can do something, u can make time for a small hobby, sleep earlier, maybe even work on a side hustle if u can make the time It’s hard to change ur lifestyle, but not impossible
That ending kind of speaks to me because I lost a job once where I used heavy rainfall as an excuse for being late and showed up 2 hours later on the work-floor. Because I had a reputation for being late that all started with a minute or calling in sick, this was simply the straw and my boss decided to not prolong my contract. Being a vivid (over)thinker, I found myself having less and less time each day to reflect on life (what does it have in store for me / where to go, bla-bla-bla) next to the ever dominant time invested into work. Not being able to take care of myself for 1 hour (eating/grooming/household chores) kept getting me shoved further out the loop. This desperation quickly led to an increase in forms of escapism just to ignore what gnaws at me and be able to fall asleep at the end of the day. And then you wake up underslept, restless and feeling like shit. Stuck up in the whole gist of lack of meaning, purpose, motivation and obstacles in work and personal life, I ran out of excuses. The rain surely didn't help.
Well as someone with autism, routines to me are something I really cling to. I like having routine, when my routine is broken i get upset. But there’s a difference between a good routine and one that becomes dull and boring. Leave time in your routine for other things...make variety and doing new things a planned part of your routine.
Love this animation, It showed and made me realized that being an employee for 40 years will never get you to your future goals, we should not only work hard, but also working smart is the key
These types of animations are so raw, so real, and so relatable. It represents how humans are in modern day world. When every day life puts it in animation, it does look boring, lonely, sad, tired, repetitive, unhappy, and frustration all mixed into one giant black shadow!
My favorite part was his shadow following him & growing. Highlight part being his shadow pushing the cigarret to his mouth and rushing him to smoke it!
Man, these kind of animated video in youtube are deep and powerful.. I think the real issue here is the 9-5 that almost everybody hates yet most people are not doing anything about it.. living life out of routine but not having a life at all.. making a living to make a living.. its sad but thats the reality for many..
There is an alternative, you can always go live off the grid and become one with nature, no taxes, no worrying about money, just living off the land. Something to think about. We are truly trapped in the system if we choose to live in society, and if you master the ways of the system all you do is perpetuate it's existence more.
But wouldn't that just be another kind of routine. Life is routine sometimes. And who says it's forced. Life is what you make it. You could live in the concrete jungle, work 9 - 5 and choose to spend your lunch hour at the gym or a different restaurant each time and try a new dish. You could meet with friends after work or on weekends, visit family, go to a poetry reading or open mic night. It's all up to you. You could live off grid and end up hating it because you aren't making the most of the situation and exploring the possibilities of that lifestyle either.
It’s working great , my life is more richer than before. Also I added the simplicity and minimalist lifestyles and mindset, People can’t realize that you can be happy by enjoying a simple things
Everything changed that rainy day. For the very first time he paused, faced himself and went to his room. He was completely soaked and went for his wardrobe to change the dress. He picked up one cream coloured t-shirt with sun image marked on it which was gifted by his mother on his 18th birthday. As he lifted and wore the dress multiple thoughts ran across his mind. Beautiful memories flashed in his mind. He looked for his phone dialled a familiar number and within a ring the other person picked and with a desperate yet sweet voice came a hello. He after a few seconds replied in a broken tone- Mom. Tears rolled back across her cheeks as she asked How are you my son? He cried profusely as for the very first time someone asked him his well being. Mom I am not good, I miss you, I need you, I need your love, I want to hug you, sleep in your lap forgetting everything with your hands caressing my hair. I love you mom. The rain has stopped ,the sun shone brighter. That beautiful afternoon he visited his mom's place. And after a heartful meal his dad played a dvd of childhood memories. They laughed, cried and relived those moments. Evening, he picked up his Guitar and played a duet along with his dad. He got back his color, he was happy.
I understood the presence of depression at the start and just watched the rest of the movie worried about how many ways he could end himself since he's constantly in dangerous places.
Routine is good. When directed correctly. Routine is the act of repitition and systemizing. When you repeat and systemize along with ambition it can lead to a great many things. Instead of a black routine in this video, routine turns into white making you excited yet level headed, each day to perfect and improve its processes.
Everyone will be sad sometimes. It isn't working if you be happy all the time. When you are happy all time, this become also a routine. You have to have some bad moments to know what the good moments are.
And the purpose of my life is to increase [retail-sector 453q]'s profit by 12.5% What a truly profound and meaningful life I lead. I have never been happier...
The way I see it the life of a person has four main ways of an go. It’s like a car going down a road. As it’s going down the road, there’s a cliff up ahead. The cliff symbolizes your life if you are completely apathetic and don’t try at all (so if you are addicted to something that is ruining your life, such as video games, alcohol, or pornography, and don’t quit it before the cliff -you’re going off). If you stay at the bottom of the cliff you’ll be barely getting by for the rest of your life, wrestling with your own lack of self discipline and drive. So the next road is a road that you can take up to the last minute you go off the cliff. This is the road of average/below average. You “get your shit together” (in other people’s eyes) and avoid the cliff. Your grades go up to B’s, maybe A’s. You might get into an average college. Get an average boring lower middle class job. Get a subpar house if you stick on this road you’re going to have a boring, “normal” life. The third road you can choose to take, but you can’t take it last minute. This is the road of “success”. You try very hard for good grades and study. You get into a good college. You get a high paying job, maybe one you even like. You have a nice house... then what. You realize you wasted so much of your younger life to be good at making money, and realize that money doesn’t matter, and that even if you are rich you are still a slave to the system. The fourth road is the road of self discovery. It is glorified by what is at the end, but it is actually the hardest road to drive on and it requires you to choose times of suffering and sacrifice. This road is more like a bridge that you have access to at any time, but just getting on it is extremely difficult. You have to have immense self discipline and courage. Along this bridge there will be trials that will test your limits and then break them. If you don’t commit you will fall of the bridge. In the end though, you come out a wise and fulfilled person, knowing what is important in life.
The worst thing is the lonliness you have to endure. Things would be less worse if you had a partner waiting for you at home but not even that. Just wake up, go to work, come home, sleep and repeat.
Something same happens to me, although I am just a college student. Like I was forced to follow a regular timetable attending school regularly(like every single working day). Even if my health wasn't good. I used to take the same dark path everyday. Like it became a habit. After some time irrespective of the problems I faced, I went to lectures without fail(like less than 10% students might have attended the lecture but was one among them. I can't control it. If don't attend I feel bad, I regret it, although I know attending lectures won't help much, I could have utilised the time somewhere else. :( This video is beautiful in portraying that feeling.
Poonam Sharma dude I would rather have that monotonous life and have freedom than be in jail or prison. You can eat what you want work where you want to work, decide exactly what kind of clothes you want and more! It shouldn't be depressing.

the computer you used, the editing software, the internet you surfs as well as the platform you published this on, all of them was a resultant of the "ROUTINE" you call and it weren't to be made if the world is full of "cool" guys who fully lives their life. i'm not 100% with such kind of jobs but this is what actually causes the progress to the humanity. a job you hate is a routine and a life if you're passionate about it..
I love how people can put there own ideas into, the fact that there arent labels and even the ending is ambiguous>> Actually the BEST part is that people CANT HELP but put THEIR OWN ideas over top of and in the story
Firstly, let me tell you that this is great work of art. The amount of attention that you've given to each element in a frame is commendable. My interpretation is that the dark blob is a symbolic representation of the "Id" part of the mind; the spawning ground of desires. It is the Id part of the mind which, according to Freudian theory, is responsible for our dreams, that, again, according to him are essentially wish fulfilments. Notice at 3:02 how the blob awakens as the man sleeps after another bleak, dreary day. His wishes get fulfilled only in his dreams. As the train stops in front of the protagonist , we see an octopus (which kind of lOoks similar to the blob) staring directly at us, the viewers. A subliminal message? As the film progresses, the blob gets bigger and bigger; probably signifying an unbearably growing burden of desires. And in the end, his mind succumbs to the urges of the id. Id is amoral and purely pleasure seeking. So it may be that the man has resorted to unlawful/violent means to end his monotony and fulfill his wishes. Edit: Also notice the tonal shift in the last few scenes. And his changing fOod habits after he takes to smoking and drinking. The ash tray which was further away from his bed becomes closer to him as the movie nears the climax...
Just government workers eh? The type of routine demonstrated in the animation is just as prevalent in the private sector, if not more so, than in the public. And not just by shear weight of numbers but also the specialisation and compartmentalisation - the factory system, even in office environments - of the private sector. In post industrial societies, drone like behaviour is programmed from the beginning. A systemic necessity of the modern order rather than mendacious planners in smokey rooms, but there nonetheless - whether public or private. It's not healthy for individuals or societies.
And the other half are dumb millenials from the 1st world who think they rock and they got paper because they can get a location independent job or travel to Colombia once a year Life ain't that easy, you know?
Nice animation! This relates to my childhood in a lot of ways. My depression lived till 13 years and after that it just left. I can't cry or feel sad unless I force myself to do so. Thanks to my narcissistic mum for destroying my childhood and my soul too. Now I have forgotten her as my mother. I can't feel the mother feeling when I see her. It feels like she's just some guardian taking care of me..
@@CarbonsHDTuts it's hard changing the circumstances and suffering seems to be inevitable. Dr. Peterson makes it seems obvious to us that the purpose of life is to find something so meaningful that the fact 'life is suffering' is no longer relevant. You are willing to take all the suffering for meaning. Order, chaos, nature, culture, dominance hierarchy, mythological stories. All have meanings embedded in them. We just have to follow our bliss.
Man people suck. There selfish, getting friends is not easy. Being alone is better and you don't have to worry about the the people who claim to be your friends. I don't believe there is anybody out there besides my family that cares about me. I totally understand this guy luckily I don't smoke I exercise during my free time. Life sucks sometimes especially when you have to be around others.
Most people see routine as a strangling obligation that saps their will to go on. I can't function without a routine, to the point that I'll spend 20+ hours a day stuck in bed unless I have the aid of entrenched habit to keep me going. Your routine is bondage; mine is freedom.
A life of solitude, without expression, may grow into isolation. Isolation is the monster that evolves into resentment. The dark shadow will overtake your personal life, if not cared for properly. Everybody and everything needs care, if you require it to survive along side you. Fulfill all of your responsibilities, and schedule an hour for you, in the calendar that you solve everyone else’s problems in… You find your own happiness, no one else will ever be able to fill that void, if your not open to anything. Be open, Be happy, Be nice for farts sake. Wonderful short film. Thank you for your time efforts.
See what we learned from this beautiful short film is being in a trap of routine will consume you one day. You are not being able to help yourself. see being in a discipline and routine is not a bad thing but being in that routine on which you have no control will definitely destroy you one day. So try to take control of your time that is the most important thing.
I'm so glad that I've escaped this life. I now work for myself. Earning the same but much happier with loads of freedom. Don't understand how so many so called 'educated' people can remain as slaves for so long
Thank you for sharing. Don’t forget, later in your film career, how powerfully you can deliver a story when telling things through other sounds than dialogue. /Former teacher of film sound
I think as the routine grows so does our negativity. We then feed it and it grows by the simple act of hating our routine, which in my mind isn’t natural. We’re slaves to the system, a system that’s designed to overcome us, if we let it. Our happiness is not in what we do but what we do to contribute back into our friends and family. Don’t let it swallow you whole.
As long as I sleep well I always have a good start to the day, May listen to a upbeat playlist, music puts me in a relaxing mood I have a cross trainer at home so I’ve got the option to work out before work, exercising releases endorphins which get you pumped and make you feel good and look good. My job is what I feel passionate about occasionally you will feel on auto pilot from time to time , but overall it’s rewarding and I feel I make a difference every day, I left my last job as it depressed me as I felt I wasn’t being challenged and was wasting my potential; saw the signs and planned my escape route! Never fall into the trap of staying within a job that makes you miserable don’t be afraid to start over... Because of my shift pattern I rarely do weekends so it’s nice to recharge my batteries spend time with family/friends and if I do have a day off I’ll try to have a nice relaxing day, important that your home is welcoming and relaxing too, so that when you come home you have a sense of warmth and comfort, especially after a hard day. I always try to keep my home as tidy as possible and clutter free as your surroundings can affect the way you feel too. Chose colours and furnishings that uplift you, pictures/ornaments that are interesting to look at. Switch things up a bit instead of having lunch at your desk/staff room, have lunch outside the office have a little walk find a nice quiet area in the building to eat.
I consider that his routine bean. It gets stronger he stays in the motions, eventually forcing him to keep to his ways when he tried to step outside of the normal schedule he had set for himself.
@{Delete this} i work night shift too, i do 84 hours a week shift work. im up from 4:30 and finish at 6:00 for 7 days straight. Waking up at 6:00 AM for work would be a luxury, especially working 9-5. Everyone thinks they have it hard. But not many people can handle working 2km underground in a mine.
Jack O'Sullivan it is routine. At start you wake go to work etc etc but you do it consciously but then it becomes almost natural you dont even think about what you're doing. As you're thinking about how your life is fucked up your hands already reached two eggs and started cooking them. It becomes a pattern of behaviour imbedded in your subconscious and this is denoted by the black figure. Once it becomes too big or once you go too far, you cant go back.
Interesting as although it could represent the depression of routine, it also seems to be the embodiment of routine, at the end the guy no longer wanted to continue with his ‘routine’ as it was obviously making him unhappy he had no idea how to break away from it,as it was everywhere his home and place of work. What’s eerie at the end routine was feeding him and getting him ready for work even though this is clearly what the guy didn’t want, the guy felt overpowered and helpless by routine and was killed by it; could say he was killed spiritually as he was disempowered by this routine; guess what I’ve taken from this is make sure you do what you love and if you are stuck in the monotony of routine change it little by little and make sure your happiness comes first
it's not depression, it's the inner himself that keeps growing looking at his eyes to eyes. his inner voice is keeping growing day by day, and at once, when everything goes silent, he just cannot neglect himself. and do what he really wants to do.

Yes, it is a simple go-to topic for any college animator and it is the most relatable. Originality lacks in story where the animation might be original.

Nope. I do now. Yes, the film is trite.

I like others thought that the black monsters was either his depression or his routine

It is called getting a job and working 40 hours weekly.

There is an alternative, you can always go live off the grid and become one with nature, no taxes, no worrying about money, just living off the land. Something to think about. We are truly trapped in the system if we choose to live in society, and if you master the ways of the system all you do is perpetuate it's existence more.
Fritz Turner Good idea on paper
How r u on youtube if u live in nature
chano iguessthis I never said anything about myself living off the grid.

I like your interpretation👏
I understood the presence of depression at the start and just watched the rest of the movie worried about how many ways he could end himself since he's constantly in dangerous places.
Routine is good. When directed correctly. Routine is the act of repitition and systemizing. When you repeat and systemize along with ambition it can lead to a great many things. Instead of a black routine in this video, routine turns into white making you excited yet level headed, each day to perfect and improve its processes.

And the purpose of my life is to increase [retail-sector 453q]'s profit by 12.5%
What a truly profound and meaningful life I lead.

"Routine kills" a real sentence represented in a short meaningfull film
Something same happens to me, although I am just a college student. Like I was forced to follow a regular timetable attending school regularly(like every single working day). Even if my health wasn't good. I used to take the same dark path everyday. Like it became a habit. After some time irrespective of the problems I faced, I went to lectures without fail(like less than 10% students might have attended the lecture but was one among them. I can't control it. If don't attend I feel bad, I regret it, although I know attending lectures won't help much, I could have utilised the time somewhere else. :( This video is beautiful in portraying that feeling.

"здесь была Лерка !!!" --- чудесно. Отличная анимация, спасибо
Half these comments are scared government workers
Just government workers eh? The type of routine demonstrated in the animation is just as prevalent in the private sector, if not more so, than in the public. And not just by shear weight of numbers but also the specialisation and compartmentalisation - the factory system, even in office environments - of the private sector. In post industrial societies, drone like behaviour is programmed from the beginning. A systemic necessity of the modern order rather than mendacious planners in smokey rooms, but there nonetheless - whether public or private. It's not healthy for individuals or societies.

Most people see routine as a strangling obligation that saps their will to go on. I can't function without a routine, to the point that I'll spend 20+ hours a day stuck in bed unless I have the aid of entrenched habit to keep me going. Your routine is bondage; mine is freedom.
When the little pet kinda depression manifestation started growing in size that's when I started getting scared

The black figure is routine...it slowly creeps on you until it kills you.
The black figure is DEFINITELY NOT routine. It’s a symbol of depression.
Carlos Donayre because he exclude God in his life, he has no purpose
Lol youre not particularly smart, are you?
