  • In this episode, we learn how to read resistor coders to learn the values of resistors. You’ll also learn how to differentiate through-hole resistors and surface mount resistors, as well as, determine the values of four band and five band resistors. Visit The Learning Circuit: bit.ly/2NpdkyV
Learn more about Passive Components: bit.ly/2NPWohN
    Visit Project14: bit.ly/2oHXxNq
Upcoming Arduino Livestream with Massimo: bit.ly/2NjcX8H
There are through-hole resistors and surface mount resistors. Through-hole resistors have color bands on them. Resistors use a color coding system to indicate their value as well as their tolerance. Tolerance is the accuracy or margin of error of the resistor rating. This can Range anywhere from a fraction of a percent up to 20 percent. You can use the color coded resistor chart below to determine the digit multiplier or the tolerance that the color band represents.
Resistors with a single black band are zero ohm resistors. Since they have the same packages as other resistors they can easily be placed on a PCB by automated machines. They’re often used as wire simply to connect traces. Karen shows you how to figure the values of some four and five band resistors.

Nice tutorial. One thing manufacturers really need though is a code for SM capacitors. It's impossible to tell what the value is without a circuit diagram or pulling it off the board and metering it. Really annoying if they end up loose in the parts storage too. No way to sort them by eye.

Excellent episode, Karen. Do keep up the good work.
Now... if Karen's job is to help new electronics hobbyists get up to speed in an interesting an engaging way then she's doing a good job. Same for Felix and his episodes for Linux - maybe dub it down a bit more for those, like me, who find getting on with Linux really unintuitive...
...but if part of their respective jobs (as I expect) is to help viewers get up to speed so they can get more out of the 'main show', as well as develop personal skills and interest, then the 'main show' is letting them and their viewers down terribly!
Karen, please keep up the good work. But also, please, have a word with whomever is making the creative decisions for the channel because at best they are getting it wrong, while at worst I suspect there is actually no discussed plan / direction in place.
If I'm making any (hopefully helpful) sense then please look up my (hopefully constructive) criticism posted in the comments on today's 'main episode': The Shrimp of Terror.
      A suggestion:
Once you've done covering the basics it may be worth a practicable project to:
-help cement what the viewer has learned
-give the viewer something newly within their grasp to achieve
-give yourself a leg-up so you don't run out of steam for the next series
In a way a part of the fun of the Ben Heck Show was watching Ben learn his craft as well as seeing the projects themselves.
      So..
How about a DIY computer project at some point, if you don't feel that's a step too far?
-Not from scratch! That's too much too soon. But, maybe, one of the many self-build kits that are available
I'd suggest looking in to buying a Harlequin 128 kit (or similar) to put together on the show, especially as related builds have been featured on the 'main show' in the past.
-You, and the viewer playing along, would end up with a fully functional ZX Spectrum clone; so it would be 'useful' achievement when complete
-Being based on standard TTL logic (no mysterious ULA) it may then open the door to future shows and summary projects
-Being based on a currently well supported old system you can then tart-it-up with readily available cases / expansions / projects as a lead in to new topics and projects.
      All the best. X
