Jaby i think the food cost is directly related to the cost of living in the country and minimum wages. Here in india its Rs.450 per day and most of the restaurants in India would not pay even that unless its at least mediocre restaurant.
Also as Achara said the ingredients may b costly as well. Plus the rent of the place. Everything when you comapare is as much multiple to Indian cost. So directly affects the cost.
For us buying a Pizza or KFC is costlier compared to indian food.
Exactly, he is comparing restaurant to a fast food joint. Lol what about chili's, olive garden, or even ihops and denny's, are they cheaper than Indian restaurants? I make Indian food is not as good sometimes, but let's not compare apples and oranges.
yeah dude ,, that is exactly the reason for the cheap prices in india ,,, also the ingridients mattters too ,, the spices and the other things are not available as easily ,,, but i do agree with him about his points about western perception of exotic dishes that is probably the reason they go overboard in explaining those dishes ,,,
But if you try to eat at a decent resaturent the cost is much higher than Domino's or KFC in citities like Kolkata or Delhi etc

I'd gone to watch Denzel's 'Inside Man' with a friend who had booked the tickets for us. When the beginning title song came up, I was shocked to hear 'Chhaiyaan, chhaiyaan' from SRK's movie, 'Dil Se. I had half a mind to turn to my friend and start cussing him out for buying tickets to a Hindi movie (or a dubbed-in-Hindi movie, I wasn't sure which). Then I noticed that the names were not Indian (at least, most of them weren't). Now that was a strange experience.
About costly food... it's the same everywhere. A decent pizza here for one person in a restaurant serving American and/or Italian dishes can cost between Rs. 150 and can go as high as Rs. 600. I assume it is much cheaper in the West.

Also, here in Brampton, Canada. (Near east coast of US) its usually 10-15 CAD per dish. Example (palak paneer) and Naan is usually like 1-2 CAD. But then again the quantity is huge and the quality is amazing. Bajji is basically a south indian pakora.

Karunesh Talwar has to be one of the best stand up comedians in India. His sense of humour is great and his jokes are unlike anyone else. I can die laughing just looking at his expressions. You should definitely watch his "Stuff about Bollywood". I laughed one straight hour watching that. Also his content is great and probably that's why he uploads his content rarely in UA-cam. There are only a few. Don't miss it.

When pizza was first introduced in India, they used to charge around Rs.400 for a small size pizza. Now you can get same for Rs 100. When something new is introduced, it's usually expensive 😅

Demand and supply guys. The price of anything is what people are willing to pay for it. Even so, I will say that the $50-60 thing is probably specific to California, and probably LA. In Arizona, you would get a filling meal in a medium scale Indian restaurant for about $20. Cheaper if you go during their "unlimited buffet lunch" times (usually weekends). In Ohio, I've gotten an unlimited Indian buffet lunch for under $10.

i guess the indian restaurants in us is quite expensive cz of all the reasons achara said and the quality of living and basic expenses in us which is undoubtedly higher in us ,they mostly take the advantage of the fact that indian food is rare in us but loved by many

Karunesh is little underrated and one of the best stand up comedian. Watch his stand ups on bollywood and other stuffs. You'll enjoy it a lot and have yr head relaxed after Mirzapur
It happens even here in India. Other cuisines are always costly here compared to Indian and you know what South Indian dishes are costly in North India and vice versa... It's business strategies... You wouldn't have many restaurants in US serving Indian dishes so you have not many options if you want to try Indian dishes...
The price of anything is simply what people are willing to pay for it. It is not related to the cost in any way. It didn't used to be this way, and probably still isn't in some parts of the world. But in the US, and even in modern day India, it is definitely the case. So yeah, Indian restaurants charge a lot!

I think the problem is that in canada/usa - they don't have enough "fast food" Indian restaurants. Comparing taco bell to an Indian restaurant wouldn't be wise - taco bell is fast food and 99.99% of all Indian restaurants i've come across in north America have all been "sit down" restaurants. We need more authentic Indian fast food restaurants around here!
Achara get it’s y Indian food is costly . Jaby you can hire random ppl in California who can cook burger but not one who knows cooking Indian food . Most Resturant owner don’t cook food . In india a cook would be paid 7000₹ ($100) a month but can you imagine that salary in USA. That’s y they are damn costly in USA

These are masterchef judges!! Their job is to taste food. They are food critics and chefs. All of them know so much more about each cuisine than the people who eat it daily. Obviously they know about Indian food. I remember in one episode Matt talks about how he ate Rumali Roti in Kolkata. So they do know how difficult it is to make each dish. Maybe that contestant made something other than Bhaji also....or maybe that particular Bhaji had much more to it than the ones we normally eat.

Its purchasing power parity which spending capacity ( an economic term)....that is cost of living is high in USA as compared to India...for example a burger might cost $4 in USA but in india would cost rs 50 that is less than a dollar....also there might be import tariffs on spices.

Bhajia in Maharashtra is same as Pakoda in North India which is deep fried chickpea batter encasing onions or potatoes or spinach, etc. It's the equivalent of fries in America, which are common place. So the guy was contrasting the same ridiculousness of entering a chef competition in America with fries as your forte.
Bhajiye is a simple and cheapest snack item. It is like going to master chef and preparing Onion rings 😀
