Awesome video. So much learning going on here. Winter has arrived in northern Indiana too. I stocked up on dog treats and baking supplies so it's hibernation time for me. The heat in the shop runs a lot but the dehumidifier stopped running. I had to edit this because half my post is gone. I appreciate that you explain the concept as well as the process. I can't wait until you do the escape hatch on the roof so I know how to do that. Mary is amazed and jealous of Poe's editing abilities. Well done. I'm working on making a giant keyboard for her oversized paws. Thank you so much for your time.

Yes once your metal work gets better you'll be using less body filler or sometimes it's better to just replace the whole metal either find it out of the wrecking yard that is close enough or make a pieces from raw sheet metal.
When I first started doing body work right out of high school in 1987 I was using a whole lotta body filler. Intel I learned what other shop's were doing. Replacing metal. These day's they don't even do body work they replace parts or call it a total have the insurance pay out.
I bought a few classic with total paper work on them because shop's don't do work on car's that are 20 year's older.

@@jsh3234 Do you have any video's of your metal finishing work? Just curious. Because after all the welding and grinding sanding seems like trying to work the metal using no bondo/body filler will take up a whole lot of time when a person has a lot of other thing's to the car/truck safe to drive on the road there's a whole list.
Spend all that time on metal work when some one could just side swip all the work that has been done. I can see if someone was going to show it bare metal then yeah I can see spending many many hour's on metal finishing work and using lead filler what most metal finisher use is lead.

With this type of meticulous metal work, very little fillers of any kind will be needed, all adding up, in my opinion, to something that will tend to be much more reliable and durable. I'm not a body person though have done prep work back in the day for painters in big shops, but I imagine that with some of the various types high-build epoxy primers and the like that exist today, that would take care of much of the minor imperfections that might need attention on a work like this.

I wonder if a portable English wheel designed like that high spot pick with a way of applying pressure, would have any value for those curved spots like above the door. Also you should work with some of the manufacturers like the ones that make those sanding blocks, just to get a promotional code to give guys a way of buying products you approve of, I don't look at it as selling out because if you find it useful, it could save us from buying some gimmick tool that is useless.

Take the high road; the reason you are doing it this way, in chunks, is because you are able to re-use original metal from the original truck as much as possible. Anyone can slap together new sheet steel and make something fancy. Takes more hand-tool use to get the original metal to move where you want it or maintain some of that original fabrication. An homage to the original builders.

@@CarterAutoRestyling Appreciate this response. I'm an artist, have been more or less full time for over 50 years and get asked constantly 'how long did that take to do such and such a painting?''. Never counted the time on a work, but once one is under way, I generally stay with it till its finished, without missing a day. That can take a week to three months, depends. The real answer is that it takes a life time to develop a repertoire and knowledge of tools and techniques and invent your own as required. And every work is somehow different, each presenting its own challenges and I can well imagine that every vehicle a restorer or customizer tackles will likewise provide its own series of challenges.

Those wanting to gain skills, this generation and maybe one later of pickups, are very good to learn on. The metal is that bit thicker and the surfaces have crown (which can help or hurt. I guess, depending on how big the mistake is). Go into the '70s and while not flat some of those panels can be just unforgettable misery a la accessory roof light holes.
Metal finishing is pretty far from having no skills, didn't know you could still buy Vixen files 😼

Might have to clear coat the bare metal on this truck once it's done! The No Bondo special or something.

Down to earth skills.. Making it look easy every step of the way. The only thing missing, you must learn to put the camera in your face every few minutes and scream "EPIC" then tell us how perfect it came out. 😂

Thanks, I'll try to work on being more obnoxious for the camera! Haha

Personally I think there is something to be said for customizing and putting pieces of the truck back into itself. Most of us don’t have enough knowledge or equipment to scratch build a complex panel.

Oh wow, winter has come! I know how you feel. I'm a bit yonder south of you, and we are going through a below average cold spell! Going to be 61°F (16C) today, won't hit 75°F (24C) till next Friday! I had to break out the heavy winter jacket!😂 Make sure you and the cats keep warm!

Lads, there be hardcore talent here! ...I wish you were near me when I was trying to delete the hideous after market sunroof on my old Supra.

Haha! I have the same problem. My 55 3100 has an aftermarket sunroof in it. I have an old roof peice to weld in but I’m afraid to tackle that being such a large area with curves in every direction.

I love old trucks, as a child of the 1950s I have been fortunate enough to see a good number of them. That truck is good hands thanks to your outstanding metal work. Your exceptionalism will deliver you from the Valley of Shame, Very impressive, thumbs up and subscribed - hands down from my old Gear-Head heart!

Hey Kyle, here in Wisconsin we've been getting into winter as well. This morning the old thermometer is reading -5 F. Over the past week we had about 20" of snow. I'm still working on my 65 F350 front fender. I think I screwed my self by rebuilding the inner support first. Now I can't get to the backside of the skin to hammer / dolly to try to get some shape back 😢. As an old coworker once told me, " so soon old, so slow smart"! Thanks for the lessons!
