Love the video Stan, and just finished listening to the podcast with you and David. I was wondering if you were interested in going to other camps around the states, would you want to come to Ohio. I know it’s quite a drive, but we are having our Winter Banquet and we would love to have you as a guest speaker!
Thank you for your kind offer. I lived in Galion Ohio from 1968-1971. I remember the wind would knock the buckeyes off the tree onto the tin roof of the front porch. What a noise that would make especially in the early morning. According to Google Earth, the house is still there, but the elementary school is gone from just down the street. I recall that my Dad bought an expensive *_“Living Color TV”_* for the Moon landing, and it was broadcasted in Black & White. It was the first time I ever heard my Dad swear. My mother held Cub Scout Den meetings in the finished basement. It was to me, a simpler time and a great place to grow up. Looking back on it, there was bad stuff going on all around us, but this small town was home to a young boy. Okay, I’m really off subject… Right now I don’t think I could afford to travel. Thank you for your kind consideration. All the best. YIS⚜
For the Aqautics portion - I notice that "small-boat sailing" is specifically mentioned. Would this obviate the time and work sailing on a larger vessel for Sea Base adventure? I would imagine conforming to the definition in the small-boat sailing merit badge is required, but this is somewhat ambiguous ("While no specific sail plan is recommended, it is suggested that the craft be smaller than 20 feet. The boat must be capsizable and have the capability of sailing to windward."), and req 6 is also achievable (but not exactly for purposes of that merit badge). Feeling like the spirit of it is being pushed perhaps, but when on duty, there is a lot of work toward operating the boat safely. Certainly any time directly on the water snorkeling, swimming, scuba-diving, paddle-boarding, or fishing would be valid? Not trying to game this. Regardless, the Scouts can readily hit the requisite time over their careers if they pay attention. How would a Sea Scout earn this (which makes me think is this award is not really for Sea Base activities)?
The Guide to Advancement is quite clear about requirements. They have to be done exactly as written to be fulfilled and signed off. As far as this particular award I don't believe that it is intended for Sea Scouts. However, it does not exclude them from achieving it. YIS⚜
@@ScouterStan Thank you for the reply. The question was intended for Scouts BSA youth. But yeah, thinking my original thought was "no" (other than the explicitly mentioned items). And "exactly as written" was the impetus to understand what the definition of "small-boat sailing" was for the BSA (not being a sailor myself).
Hello stan, for all of these requirements such as hiking 100miles or 50hours of water sports etc. do they have to be completed on a BSA outing or is a scout able to do it on their own? YIS
I think that a scout can do some of the requirements on their own. They will need someone to authenticate the completion of the requirement for any merit badges or awards. I hope this answers your question. YIS⚜
I have been secretly working on getting one up in the online store. I should have a prototype patch soon but haven't heard from them in a while. When the prototype comes in I will put a photo of it in the community post section. YIS⚜
Hey ScouterStan, I love your content! Several scouts in our troop just earned the main patch with the camping tab. This may sound like a silly question but,I heard you say it goes where the temporary patches go. Is this a permanent patch that goes on that pocket or has this been deemed a temporary award? A parent was wanting to sew it in their scout’s uniform.
If you plan on sewing it onto the uniform it needs to go onto the right pocket side where temporary patches go. If they are looking to sew it in a more permanent place a lot of scouts are putting it on the back of their merit badge sash. Each segment can be added on as it is earned. Good question and thank you for the opportunity for letting everyone know. Yis⚜
I'm not really sure if that is part of this achievement or part of the conservation award. A long time ago the Hornaday Conservation Award was replaced with the Distinguished Conservation Service Award [ ua-cam.com/video/fm2msGaiJIs/v-deo.html ]. Both of these cover the award thoroughly. If you have specific questions or suggestions please let me know. YIS⚜
I think Scoutbook tracks all these things if someone enters the data. I have seen Scoutbook reports for nights camping for OA elections. The Scout can also track these in the back of their handbook manually. I don’t think there is an automatic setting that counts for this data. Good question. YIS⚜
@noelcorcino728 - Sorry, your question got lost deep within the conversation. I believe this program is completely done as a patch and segments. It is often confused with the Distinguished Conservation Service Awards Program Video: ua-cam.com/video/fm2msGaiJIs/v-deo.html Everything can be purchased locally at your scout shop or online. YIS⚜
@@ScouterStanhi Stan, am referring to “national medal for outdoor achievement” not just the patches. We are able to completely finish all the requirements but can’t find the medal itself.. is it being discontinued? I never saw any articles that it’s discontinued.
Hi Stan! may i ask any updates on the national outdoor award program ,particularly the "National medal for outdoor Achievement". is this medal discontinued?
Not that I know of. I know it went through an update in 2022. Here is a link for the old and new requirements. usscouts.org/advance/scoutsBSA/outdoor-medal.asp To my knowledge, it is still active and achievable. YIS⚜
There are yes. It’s usually for another amount of miles or nights pertaining to each segment. Camping for example each 25 additional nights will earn you 1 gold device and for each 100 additional nights you earn 1 silver device (like the military, gold comes before silver)
@Hannah Dufoe - Sorry, the website is out of date. It was put on hold with the podcast. Thankfully as it turns out the web service issue is coming to an agreeable resolution. If you are looking for the episode you suggested it was filmed last week and is in the editing phase. It's scheduled to air on August 31 (CW220831 S7-E07 - Tips and Advice for New Scoutmasters). Thank you for the suggestion. I'm sure it will be a success. YIS⚜
Thank you so much for asking. The Paul Bunyan Award has been on the list for a long time now. I was going to go ahead and move forward with doing episode 13 about that award. Now I can say you asked for it. Thank you so much for the suggestion. YIS⚜
The following equivalency is defined as Scouts BSA, Troops - First Class Scout. Venturing, Crews - Discovery Award. Sea Scouts, Ships - Ordinary Rank. I hope this answers the question. Thanks YIS⚜
Hey Stan, I am a 16 year old Life scout and am currently working on my Eagle. A really big ambition of mine is National Medal for Outdoor Achievement but some of the requirements (like the 16-hour leave no trace training course) I am having trouble how to fulfill them. The leave no trace website says in order to take the course, you have to be at least 18. Am I inable to recieve the actually medal as a youth?
I'm not really sure if the training you are referring to. It sounds like it is intended for instructors. I believe the requirement is to attend a course as a scout, not the instructor. I would recommend that you contact your council office service center for clarification about this requirement. They should have resources that will help you fulfill this requirement. I hope this helps answer your question. Thank you so much for subscribing to the channel. YIS⚜
If you are still trying to knock this requirement out they are now offering virtual LNT courses. I occasionally see a mention of 18+ for the instructor courses or some of the in person ones but don't see that for the virtual ones. Many places find their insurance costs go up exponentially if they allow minors to attend particularly if they are unaccompanied so that may be why a lot of the in-person courses are closed to you.
I didn't know about this as a scout
This patch is relatively new as of January 2018. Hopefully, this has inspired you to introduce it to your troop, crew, or ship. YIS⚜
