  • Camping Toilet tips, Bush Toilet & Portable toilet options. We show you the basic tools to use and some family friendly options such as using a shower tent as a private screen for when nature calls.
In regards to plastic bags as stated in the video please avoid using them, if you have no choice then use compostable bags NOT Bio degradable bags! Bio Degradable bags are made from chemicals which need UV radiation (or sun light) to breakdown, where compostable bags will decompose but it will still take some time.
Digging holes for human waste are best to be dug 300mm (or 1 foot deep), reason for this is too shallow animals will dig it up and too deep 600mm plus (2 feet +) it wont decompose as fast.
There are other toilet options like the chemical toilets, we didnt cover those as we feel they are more of a caravan & boating option.

Thanks Ronny, good coverage. But a few comments ...
Crapping in the bush is much more involved than you might think. In every way except YOUR convenience, it is better to carry it out with you. In many places in the world, that is what you have to do. However, that's mostly not feasible here so we need to consider a few points.
    1. Recognize that in digging a hole you will inevitably cut plant roots. In fragile coastal and desert environments, this damage could take years to repair and may even kill plants. Choose your spot carefully.
    2. The soil has a rich microbial layer which may only be 30 cm deep. Below that, it is mostly just sand here in Oz. If you want your poo to decompose, you need bacteria and they are mostly only found in that top layer. So don't get too keen and dig a really deep hole as it will do more damage and will make the decomposition take years longer.
    3. when digging the hole, FIRST scrape the leaf litter/top layer aside into it's own heap. THEN, dig the hole, putting the soil into another heap. When back filling the hole, soil first, and tamp down. Then finally, scrape back that top layer and spread it around as naturally as you can. This is part of not leaving any trace of your visit and is also the best environmentally.
    4. consider carefully your choice of paper. Get compos-table, biodegradable paper ie not supermarket stuff.
    5. Some recommend putting a match to the paper to burn it before back filling. This is not a bad idea, but can be a serious fire hazard in dry environments, so if you choose to do it, take great care!
    6. Realise that people are lazy. They will crap closer to camp sites rather than further away. If you do the same, you may get an unpleasant surprise when you dig your hole and uncover that brown landmine that Ronny was talking about! The further you walk the less chance you will have of doing that. Also, if you imagine that holes are scattered in a circle around a site, by walking out further, you increase the size of the circle and its area and hence you spread the environmental impact. Warning ... don't get lost doing this! if it's dense scrub you may lose sight of your campsite so take precautions. Accompany younger children to avoid them straying. Put strands of toilet paper in bushes as you walk out, to follow on your return - and yes, COLLECT them up as you go back and pop them in your campfire or rubbish bags.
    7. Many inexperienced campers are very uncomfortable crapping in the outdoors and will take short cuts. Make sure that everyone in your group understands all the basic rules of toileting. If you have young kids, you not only need to teach them these things thoroughly, but go with them until they are confident to go on their own. I have seen many kids and even adults get severe constipation as a result of being too scared (or just too uncomfortable) to go out and crap in the bush.
    8. Once you have mastered the art of crapping in the outdoors, it can be a trouble free, enjoyable and even be a spiritual experience! Enjoy the sights and sounds as you contemplate your surroundings.
    9. Finally, don't forget to wash your hands when you get back to camp!!
    10. Nothing ... I just like to have 10 points :-)

Great video, thanks. We use pop up hunting hides for toilet privacy as they do not have floors in them. They have cute windows, so you can have a poo with a view if you want, and they blend in with the surroundings. Thanks for sharing.

I highly recommend the book How to Shit in the Woods By Kathleen Meyer.
Also, have a look at Cleanwaste bags. They may be a US-only product. Because of the extra stuff (gelling agent and bacteria) you can throw Cleanwaste bags in the dumpster.

When using a long drop or camp ground toilet a little Vicks on your nose makes it more bearable. Better to use these toilets first thing in the morning not so smelly.

A manual post hole digger makes a nice deep reusable hole... Less chance of you or someone else digging up shallow surprises also.

Thanks for the video as we are going away for a few days and there are no facilities where we are going, this video is going to help a lot. I've got to make this as pleasant as possible for the wife or this will be the last such trip that we will ever go on together.

    What a crap video :)
Sorry mate couldn't help that one. My misses's only requirement to camping 'rough' is the toilet seat. I am so lucky. :)
On a serious note though, I believe that this was a great choice of clip. As you said in the description, the shite sheet that is left around in the bush is getting worse.

      Hahaha,
yeah it's good when the other half can tolerate that, will warn you though it might change when you have kids unless ofcourse you already have kids and they are "bush" toilet trained, in which case you really have it sussed out ;)

Is it acceptable to burn your toilet paper... wait until the flames have gone out & it's completely extinguished, then bury it?

    • @jimbojones2457
      @jimbojones2457 7 років тому +3

retry tobuy absolutely!!! It's actually better to burn the paper in the hole, that way it breaks down quicker and doesn't smell as much.
