    Do you think artists should ditch social media once they don't really need to promote themselves anymore? That's what I would do if my filmmaking career actually took off.

    Sza isn't really a good example for quiet or unattainable celebrities, imo. She's notorious for expressing that she's very sensitive online (she's also really open about having anxiety, and she doesn't only talk about that in her music), and she's had multiple instances where she's had meltdowns on social media due to people scrutinizing everything she does. That one asian girl on tiktok that she was arguing with back and forth was also a good example of her not knowing how to do the 'celebrity thing' as well as someone like Beyonce. I do agree though, I think she does a better job at addressing every accusation than MOST celebrities, but she definitely has her moments.

    I 100% agree with what you’re saying, however it seems like in this day and age it’s really hard for artists to grow without that “personal connection” to their fans. It can definitely be a blessing and a curse. Times have changed. Beyoncé was lucky enough to come up in an era where she didn’t need the assist of social media to market herself. We are in such a social media age where if you aren’t interacting on a personal level people find you “one dimensional” or “boring”. Not saying it’s impossible to grow but it definitely helps artists with sales and recognition. The general public want someone they can relate to and see themselves in these days and as an artist myself that gives me hella anxiety lol. If I could have the mystique of Beyoncé or Michael Jackson and still be on top in this generation that would be amazing.

    • @AiahVarh

      I wholeheartedly agree and understand where you’re coming from. Having a best friend who is also an artist has definitely given me a lens into the complexities of navigating social media as you all grow. I definitely believe there’s a beauty in having a two way relationship amongst artists and their fans, but there’s definitely a fine line. As an artist, I’d try to be mindful of what exactly I share with the general public just like I do with strangers and/or acquaintances. I would only confide in and share my inner most thoughts with my closest friends and loved ones because that is where I’m safest. I think vulnerability is a beautiful thing, but we just have to be careful about who exactly we are vulnerable with. I have faith that you’ll find that healthy balance and flourish 🤎

I also feel like fans have a part in as well. With the rise of social media, people want to be in your business 24/7 and to be honest, it’s nauseating. Agreed. I certainly feel like it's about how one handles the criticism to what they chose to share. I do like when artists share what's most comfortable for them to put out and give some parts of their personality. Fans fall in love with artists for either their work, personality, story or all three, and so it can be quite limiting for an artist to just focus on just the things they produce. As a Nicki fan, there were some things that I disagreed with but I do like welcoming different perspectives especially when they're presented in a sincere way.

    Only thing about Halle is she wasn't really that private about it actually. She was on snapchat damn near every day, she was saying people were being anti-Black for suggesting that she had a "pregnancy" nose, she allowed another pregnant woman to be dragged online, she was in her man's videos looking and acting visibly pregnant, had baby cooing and crying the background of videos. I get the point, however, in her case, it would have been different if she would have been like "yeah, I'm pregnant but I want to focus on my health and developing this fetus" vs doing what reads as attention seeking behaviors while denying a secret you're not doing a good job at keeping secret. I don't think she owed the public a window into her business - especially since pregnancy is a high risk experience, however, if she wasn't prepared to not address it, she should have completely ignored things and not been adding to the speculation directly (I'm not referring to having to go to specific industry events to promote TLM/The Color Purple). She knew she was pregnant, most people correctly speculated the same so why even give credence to the rumors by deflecting instead of just not acknowledging those inquires? If she had stayed off social media during that time, I'd agree but she was very much online and engaging with her and her boyfriend's audiences.

    As an artist and creative, I see social media as the death of authenticity. Everybody is copying and oversharing online. There is a difference between content creators and artists. Social media makes the two seem synonymous but they are not. I think that creative expression is threatened when an algorithm controls the value….

    • @AiahVarh
      @AiahVarh  5 місяців тому +1

      Wow wow wow, this really resonated with me. As someone who’s been rooted in my creativity since I was a child, I find myself conflicted with whether or not I still want to publicize my work. Even in my professional field as a brand strategist and designer, I find people downplaying the value of my work and skill because it’s assumed anyone can do it. As both a creative and content creator, I definitely feel like the lines have become blurred and it’s become increasingly discouraging to create my own content because it appears clickbait trumps authentic and intentionally crafted content. But, we must persevere. I hope you’re still showing up in your creative spaces.

    I don’t think that is about what they share but about how they share it. It’s like it’s not about what you say but about how you saying it. And also recognise the limits ! In our modern day and time it is very important for artist to share who they are and their character but i would rather share absolutely everything in my music rather than my Instagram. (Kendrick Lamar do that well.) The mysterious part used to be important and still is but we also need connection with them, we need to relate to them. it’s an art in itself. As an example, Beyoncé became who she is before social media so she was lucky for that. But just take a look to her last collaboration with Adidas, it was a disaster. Why ? Because people relate to her songs but not with her style. Again, why ? Because at the end of day, we don’t really know her so we can’t really relate to her fashion style. (Not the only reason tho.) but it isn’t the first time she tried to have an impact in the fashion industry. It just never worked for that particular reason. Then she dropped her perfum last year, do you remember what she did ? She came in social media and she talked lmaooo because she realised it. I mean, not her but her team. Definitely. For Nicki, I was fine with her first 2/3 tweets. She’s human so people logically were waiting for a reaction but again, she shared way too much. It wasn’t a reaction anymore but an emotional breakdown. And that’s where I agree with you. We got a be honest with yourselves, artists are fantasy for some, and for woman specially it is really hard to maintain your image. But I also think as anything, it depends on the artist, the moment and the reason why. I would also say for some artist, sharing isn’t necessary, like drake, I don’t care about who he is, I vibe to his music. That doesn’t work for everybody gladly or sadly.
    But at the end of the day I think it’s about the balance in the middle. And it’s really really hard for labels, management team and artist to be capable to reach that. Thank you for your video sis, take care 🫶🏽💖

Because the commentary from social media was that although she “didn’t announce” it .she participated in gaslighting her fans along with ddg. She photoshopped pictures and used old moments to confuse the public on purpose. She even made videos defending her “non pregnant” nose. Only to give birth and overshare. I don’t think she was a good choice for this video. She definitely tarnished her image because it came off as immature and corny . She was not in control of anything! real control is staying silent or OWNING it . Your commentary is very flawed because you and others ALWAYS fail to mention the Lady Leshurr And Nicki situation.
    Lady Leshurr is a UK rapper that was flown in to meet with “Titanic” records around 2016 - they offered her $250K and record deal ONLY if she did a diss record. She refused and was sent back home in tears because this was one of her first chances to buy her mother a home and she moralistically could not do what they asked of her. Similar deals was offered to Cupcakke and Angel Haze (and maybe many more)
    Nicki Minaj almost lost her career in 2018 when there was a clearly corporate funded campaign to discredit Nicki and end her career using other female rappers as pawns… do you know who stopped that from happening…. The barbz - not the general public (me, you, and everyone else)
    So when Nicki is over sharing, forced to talking riddles, and “tainting” her image with general public who have not clue what she had to survive she is strengthening her relationship with a group of people who held her up. They also pushed back against the corporate machine that has shelved and destroyed female rap in the past.
    So now that you know that maybe we shouldn’t compare her to women who have middle class upbringings and manipulate situations behind the scenes because that’s where their power lies… Nickis power lies in her fan base. A fan base that is studied by labels and whatever tactics record labels test against them it shows up later to thwart the Korean group BTS fan base attempts to give their favorite artist(s) longevity on the Billboard charts etc.
    Also maybe your next video on Nicki should be advice on how to respond to corporate funded propaganda/manipulation and how black women can avoid being swallowed up by it. Considering most people haven’t had money put on their heads to end their career that commentary could be fascinating.
    Lastly, I wasn’t a Nicki fan… I was a Lady Leshurr fan that didn’t know she (and other black female artists) were suffering because Male Execs hate that a black woman (Nicki) has so much concentrated power and a PAYING fan base that they can’t make money off. And instead of cultivating talent like Lady Leshurr and the above mentioned rappers they stomped on their dreams and almost killed their love of music. You’re welcome to follow up on their career path from 2016 to now - it’s not pretty. Stomping on Black womens dreams is not something we should ever stand for and most of us can NOT judge Nicki for her response to it because she was the only woman to actually survive a corporate funded hate train - obviously she’s doing something right.
