I love your passion and the fact that you have no ego in terms of studio equipment. You stated that you liked more colored, full of character microphone yet you don’t say one is better than the other and gives fully credit to more « modern sounding « mics. I think you would be a really great microphone or studio equipment reviewer as I enjoyed thoroughly the review and your studio and all the places you’ve shown are really pleasant to look at. Hope to see more review of this kind from you! Peace ;) oh btw I might grab that 4050 as I’m searching something along the line of the Sony a800g without spending 10k lol ;) thanks for the vid ;)
I’ve owned this mic for a while. Goes extremely well with preamps that have characteristics like Neve, Manley Voxbox or UA610. Also love this mic on rap vocals with a clean ISA ONE pre
Cool to know! I should try that on my UA610 some time. I hardly get out the AT-4050, but I picked up a second one today - so u really should explore more (and see what's nice on stereo stuff - maybe just out front on upright piano?) Could also try on my ISA 4 Ch. rack
Thanks for demo with the drums, sounds real good. But one thing that is not usually pointed out is how much the rest of the recording equipment costs. Looks like you have at least $5000 worth of gear that it is plugged into. Do you mind telling us what recording gear you are using? Thanks 😁
I like the 4050 because I got mine for 100$ off ebay in supposedly defective condition. Misbehaved the first time I plugged it in but except that one time it has had zero problems for the past 3 years.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ For that kind of money, how could I not love the 4050? LOL
Mine is coming today. I'll be doing more modern rap music. I've watched this video several times now and will be back to give my honest opinion once tested if someone comments. This is my first quality Condenser mic over 100 bucks so the only thing I can really compare it to is the super cheap mugig silver condenser mic that went for around 30 bucks. However I can say that mic was 1000 times better than the old cheap radio shack dynamic mics I used back in the early 2000s when I had no clue what I was doing. 🤣
I'll be doing 3 tests. One directly into an MPC X. One going through the Yamaha MG10XU mixer then into the MPC X. Then one just through the mixer than monitoring with headphones directly from the mixer.
Thank you so much for this video. I use the AT 2020 for acoustic Instruments (guitar, sax, percussion) and language in combination with a Behringer preamp and a Steinberg interface. I‘m very satisfied with the results, especially language and acoustic guitar (nylon, steelstring) are fantastic. I think that Audiotechnica are very quality products.
What settings did you have the mic on for the acoustic guitar?? Omni, Cardi or Figure 8? Assuming 10dp?? Thanks for the video, appreciate the info.... Looking for best setting for vocal with acoustic guitar
What are the big differences in audio, depth, brightness, presence, etc, between the AT4050 and the AT4040 (on Voice overs), beside price being double. Thank you very much in advance for your details!
Sound color depends on pattern. Pretty forward indeed on omni, less so on cardioid, and pretty neutral, very pleasant on fig eight. I use it mainly on grands, as an additional pickup when recording classic piano concertos. Gives a very nice touch to the grand, whereas the Sennheiser MKH40 becomes extremely muddy (which is on its own the better mic by far). Main overheads B&K 4006.
Definitely the AT. I've never heard good things about the cheaper TLMs - the few that I've used were really underwhelming. Neumann isn't the company they used to be, sadly... even the new U87Ai really isn't much to write home about.
I love my 4050 with a clean ISA ONE pr for rap vocals. Also read that Kanye used this mic on one of his album. A great alternative for the super expensive Sony c800g
@@consordini6258 I wish I read your comment before I purchased the tlm 102 for hip hop vocals. I returned it and hated it. I thought it was me after all of the positive reviews but I thought it was noisy, harsh and often sounded distorted. Especially with higher volume levels during compression.
@@theBbOoSSss still in reservations. I learned a harsh lesson. Fuck the reviews, fuck the brand, fuck the money. It's about what type of voice you have and your sibilance levels. Oh and your skill level in mixing. If your skill level sucks your quality will sound like shit. Even spending $2,000 won't save yet. Same can be true if your skill level and sound damping is excellent with proper treatment and pop filter your quality will sound professional with a cheap mic. Currently I'm on hiatus because I bought a $2,256 PC so due to covid and shortage I have to wait 8 weeks. In the meantime I'm just relaxing and not in a rush whatsoever to spend money. Currently I have a cheap SE electronics S 1X or something but not using it. I now overall have a 100% treated room and it sounds better than the Neumann tlm 102. True facts.
I just bought a used one, my interface is scarlett 2i2. The mic is not picking up any sound. I have tested other mics out and they work. I was wondering if the scarlett 2i2 provides enough gain for the mic or if it's the mic that is messed up?
You sure you got the 48v phantom power running to it? I had some panic a few weeks back when I though I broke mine, turns out I simply bumped my 48v button lol
“Hey dad can I borrow this...forever?!” Lol, any experience with the 4047 for comparison sake? I’m looking into a nice multi pattern condenser , great smooth detail but not bright/harsh. SE2300 is also in my radar. I want a nice versatile mic for my locker
All I know is that my audio technica at2035 does a far superior job than my Rode Nt1-A. So I'll be buying this instead of a $2k alternative. Some of the richest guitarists in the world use this live including James Hetfield! Modern? Tone? Huh? The more expensive mic is supposed to accurately record with NO color. If a mic over colors your sound it's considered to be less than! When I dial in a guitar tone on my rig I want it to record that tone. That kind of thinking has never changed! Vocals are a different story

The difference between this and the spirit is night and day. I was considering the spirit but after hearing this demo I'm sold.
It is indeed a great mic. Thanks for watching!

Hey ;) I keep reading in forums that the AT4050 is a relatively dark/warm mic. But you say it’s rather on the bright side?
Hello Mister
May you indicate At4050 for livestreamings and talking?.
Thanks for attention and greeting from Brazil.

All flat, cardiod mode. No pad engaged. For vocal and acoustic at the same time, omni would probably be better. Hope that helps!
Your voice sounds clear on this mic without a pop filter

I think AT4040 has a larger diameter capsule, and this perhaps more low end..
It's a nice mic too.
